1972 4 - 8 October Sydney – Port Macquarie
Andrew Cowan/John Bryson in the Mitsubishi Galant GS – from the cover of the 1973 regulations booklet 1972 4 - 8 OCTOBER SYDNEY – PORT MACQUARIE 86 PREAMBLE Again the rally returned to Port Macquarie and it was now evident the town would be ‘home’ for the event for the foreseeable future. Dan White took over from Alan Lawson as Road Director, having assisted him in 1971. Dan held this position until after the 1977 event, and his presentation of the course each year, and the road books, was quite outstanding. The overseas drivers came in force again and took out three of the top four placings, with the outright position undecided until the last few stages. Nissan and Mitsubishi attended in full force with a number of cars and flew their mechanics from Japan. Dan White spent considerable time studying the forests and the 1972 event proved to be the most competitive of all the ‘Crosses’ run to date, with a very high percentage of competitive distance in the total distance; he also introduced longer stages than those experienced in the past. The biggest pre-event shock was the announcement that the organisers were enforcing the FIA vehicle eligibility regulations. This left the Holden Dealer Team in a quandary, for it wasn’t that all cars had to be homologated with FIA papers to prove the legality of any modifications, the Team had strengthened some of the suspension and basic structure to provide a virtually maintenance-free car for a full year of rallying. As the Team was in the midst of preparing for the Bathurst 1000, Dulux Rally and final rounds of the Australian Rally Championship it didn’t have the time to prepare another car for the Southern Cross, or ‘de-modify’ the existing cars. -

DULUX RALLIES 1971 & 1972 A History Conducted by AUSTRALIAN SPORTING CAR CLUB LIMITED COMPILED BY TOM SNOOKS – April 2019 FOREWORD START OF DULUX RALLY – 1971 I’m a little hazy about the start of the event but I recall in 1970, after I moved to Sydney from Perth (July), I lived with Allan Lawson for some time and he was talking to the Promotions/PR Manager, Roy Waters, of ‘’Balm Paints’’, about an event to promote the company’s upcoming name change to ‘Dulux’. Research showed that the first group to promote to were car repair shops, refinishers, etc, as the company produced a large range of automotive paints and lacquers. It also showed that the most effective way to carry out a promotion was through motor sport, as the operators and workers of the repair shops and refinishers were interested in the sport, and hence the development and conduct of the first true ‘Road and Track’ event in Australia. Allan Lawson was the Event Director for the 1971 event and was also the Event Director of the Southern Cross Rally (1969 to 1971). Both events were conducted under the auspices of the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) by the Australian Sporting Car Club (ASCC), of which John Keran was President. Allan invited me to be the Event Administration Manager, and Allan Horsley, Promoter of the Oran Park Raceway, the Race Director. John Keran Allan Lawson Tom Snooks Lawson moved to Queensland early in 1972 and I took over as Event Director of the Dulux Rally, and also was appointed Secretary of the ASCC. -

Bob Holden in the great race By Paul Watson ob Holden has competed in the great race “34 or 35” times, including his win with Rauno Aaltonen in a Mini Cooper S in 1966. B In the fi rst Armstrong 500, at Phillip Island in 1960, Bob and fellow Peugeot ace Ken Brigden drove a 403 as part of the Continental & General Distributors team. They were fourth in their class (classes were governed by price then), behind class winners Geoff Russell, David Anderson and Tony Loxton, who completed 164 laps. The Vauxhall Cresta of John Roxburgh and Frank Coad (167 laps) is widely regarded as having won the event, although offi cially there was no outright winner. Another 403, driven by Ron Lilley and Jim Gullan, was eighth in class C. In 1961, when the overall winner was a Mercedes 220SE driven by Bob Jane and Harry Firth, 403s fi lled three of the fi rst four places in class C. First were Geoff Russell and Dave Anderson (163 laps), followed by Bill Coe and Ron Lilley (161 laps), with Bob Holden, Ken Brigden and Albert Bridge fourth on 153 laps. Their car had rear-end problems and was twice black- fl agged for spilling fuel on the track. Bill Coe and Syd Fisher’s 404 in the 1963 Armstrong 500, at Bathurst. This car was disqualifi ed but Bob Holden and Bill March took third place in their class in an identical car. Bathurst 1963 entry list. ROUND 11 – Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, RACE 30 Mount Panorama Circuit, Bathurst, New South Wales. October 9 - 12 2014 Originally constructed as a scenic tourist drive in 1938, the Mount Panorama circuit plays host to all types of motorsport, including the Bathurst 1000, the Bathurst 12 Hour GT race, and Easter motorcycle meetings. On non-race weekends the circuit becomes a double lane public road, though local police routinely patrol the area to ensure the 60km/h speed limit is adhered to. The 6.213km circuit has been resurfaced for the rst time since 2001 and the grippy new surface has many predicting new speed and laps records. EVENT 11, SUPERCHEAP AUTO BATHURST 1000, MOUNT PANORAMA RACE 21 OF THE 2012 V8 SUPERCARS CHAMPIONSHIP Point of Interest: This year is the 50th year of the Bathurst endurance race at Mount Panorama. First held in 1963 after the event had originally been held at Phillip Island, the race has since become world-famous. It’s important to note that this year is not the 50th anniversary or 50th running of the race. The 50th anniversary is next year and the 50th running actually occured in 2010 given there were two races held in 1997 and 1998. V8 Supercars have elected to celebrate this year’s event as the 50th year that drivers, teams and fans have gathered at the famous circuit for the race that captures Australia’s imagination. Circuit Length: 6.213-kilometres Circuit Direction: Anti-Clockwise 2011 Crowd: 179,939 (4 days) Circuit Description: Originally constructed in 1938 as a scenic tourist drive, Mount Panorama has hosted all types of motorsport including the world famous Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, the annual 12 Hour GT race, 24 Hour endurance races and the Easter motorcycle meetings. The circuit is public road on non-race weekends and has also hosted the Australian Grand Prix in the past. 10 FAST FACTS 1. Beat TeamVodafone and the Holden Racing Team and chances are you will win this year’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. The two Holden squads have dominated the Bathurst race since 2001, claiming nine of the last 11 wins in the October classic. In that time the Holden Racing Team has claimed five wins, Triple Eight have claimed four and Kmart Racing (part of the HRT/HMS family in the mid 2000s) won twice. -

B Manawatu Car Club Inc MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2018 Something for Everyone Page 1 of 36 … EDITORSPEAK… Email Trevor at [email protected] The price of petrol has become a bit of a talking point on the Awhitu Peninsula, given that we choose to live 40 something kms from the nearest town and have no access to public transport, the net result being that everyone has to travel everywhere by car (only because tractors are just too slow!!). If you think about it rationally though, is it really that expensive?? By comparison with historical NZ pricing, yes, the cost is at an all-time high. However, consider this. That litre of 91 octane that you have just put into your tank has had to have been pumped from the ground, shipped halfway around the world, refined, distributed, retailed and subject to taxation. The government takes too much in taxes I hear you cry. Would it surprise you to find out that NZ enjoys the 6th lowest fuel tax in the world?? It still accounts for a large component of the cost at the pump, however let’s take a look at the current breakdown of excise per litre - in round figures 63 cents heads off to the Land Transport Fund (for new roading infrastructure, roading maintenance, public transport, walking and cycling options), 6c goes to the ACC Motor Vehicle account, 0.3c is a fuel monitoring charge, 0.7c is the Local Authorities fuel tax, 6.0c to the Emissions Trading Scheme, roughly 33c is the GST component and, lucky me, the Auckland Regional fuel tax adds a further 10c.
