Hitchcock, Systematic Agrostologist of the United States Department of Agriculture, u entitled Types of American grasses: a study of the American species of grasses described by Linnaeus, Gronovius, Sloane, Swartz, and Michaux," is an important contribution to our knowledge of American grasses. It is regarded as of fundamental importance in the critical sys- tematic investigation of any group of plants that the identity of the species described by earlier authors be determined with certainty. Often this identification can be made only by examining the type specimen, the original description being inconclusive. Under the American code of botanical nomenclature, which has been followed by the author of this paper, "the nomenclatorial t}rpe of a species or subspecies is the specimen to which the describer originally applied the name in publication." The procedure indicated by the American code, namely, to appeal to the type specimen when the original description is insufficient to identify the species, has been much misunderstood by European botanists. It has been taken to mean, in the case of the Linnsean herbarium, for example, that a specimen in that herbarium bearing the same name as a species described by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum must be taken as the type of that species regardless of all other considerations. -

The three-fold increase in the total num- ber of species covered in the current compilation is the result of both a larger study area and a recent increase in published ontogenetic studies of fishes by many authors and students of the morphology of early stages of marine fishes. It is a tribute to the efforts of those authors that the ontogeny of greater than 70% of species known from the western North Atlantic Ocean is now well described. Rice ABSTRACT Over the past decade, ecosystem-based management has been incorporated into many marine- management administrations as a marine-conservation tool, driven with the objective to predict, evaluate and possibly mitigate the impacts of a warming and acidifying ocean, and a coastline increasingly subject to anthropogenic control. The NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) is one such administration, and was instituted “to serve as the trustee for a network of 13 underwater parks encompassing more than 600,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters from Washington state to the Florida Keys, and from Lake Huron to American Samoa” (NOAA, 2015). The management regimes for nearly all national marine sanctuaries, as well as other marine protected areas, have the goal of managing and maintaining biodiversity within the sanctuary. Yet none of those sanctuaries have an inventory of their known species nor a standardized protocol for measuring or monitoring species biodiversity. Here, I outline the steps required to compile a species inventory for an MPA, but also describe some of stumbling blocks that one might encounter along the way and offer suggestions on how to handle these issues (see Appendix A: Process for Developing the MBNMS Species Inventory (PD-MBNMS)). This project consists of three research objectives: 1. Determining what species inventory efforts exist, how they operate, and their advantages and disadvantages 2. HISTORICAL AFFINITIES AND POPULATION BIOLOGY OF THE BLACK WARRIOR WATERDOG (NECTURUS ALABAMENSIS) FINAL REPORT FY 1998 FEB - 4 1999 Craig Guyer Department of Zoology and Wildlife Science Auburn University Auburn, AL 36849 (334)-844-9232 [email protected] SUMMARY 1) The Black Warrior waterdog is morphologically and genetically distinctive from other waterdogs in the state of Alabama and should be recognized as Necturus alabamensis. 2) The Black Warrior waterdog is most closely related to the mudpuppy, Necturus maculosus. 3) Four waterdogs are present in the state of Alabama, the two listed above, plus two forms from the Coastal Plains; the latter include Necturus beyeri (all rivers draining into Mobile Bay) and Necturus iodingi (Appalachicola to Perdido drainages, inclusive). 4) Populations of Black Warrior waterdogs in Sipsey Fork and Brushy Creek appear to be patchily distributed, creating challenges for determining key features of demography. 5) State and Federal protection of the Black Warrior waterdog as a threatened species is warranted. INTRODUCTION Waterdogs (Necturus: Proteidae) are paedomorphic, stream-dwelling salamanders of the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains. The systematics of these creatures has challenged herpetologists for the past 60 years. The Black Warrior Waterdog, a species restricted to the upper Black Warrior drainages of Alabama, has been particularly problematic. Viosca (1937) originally described this taxon as being similar toN maculosus, but subsequent taxonomic treattnents considered specimens from this drainage to be conspecific with waterdogs from the lower portions of the Mobile drainages (N maculosus: Bishop 1943, Schmidt 1953; N beyeri alabamensis: Hecht 1958, Conant 1958; N puncta/us: Brode 1969; N beyeri: Mount 1975; N alabamensis: Conant 1975, Conant and Collins 1998). -

All photographs are used with permission and are fully credited to the copyright holder and/or originator. Other items, but in particular scientific publications, traditionally do not require permissions, but only citations to the author(s) if used for scientific and/or nonprofit purposes. Names, both common and scientific, follow those in USDA NRCS (2015). When identifying milkweeds in the field, attention should be focused on the distinguishing characteristics listed for each species. -

[email protected] My name is Liz Makings and I am the collections manager of the Arizona State University Herbarium. I was a graduate student at ASU in 2000 when I met Dr. Pinkava and he had just retired, so while I missed out on his talents as a teacher, I was lucky to get to know him as a mentor, colleague, and friend. Dr. Pinkava had a heart of gold, a mind like a trap, and a delightful collection of idiosyncrasies that was perfectly suited to his career path. He was hired at ASU in 1964 after completing his PhD. at Ohio State and was immediately responsible for teaching a 300 level botany class called “Flora of Arizona.” He undertook this responsibility with a meticulousness and attention to detail that can only be described as “Pinkavesque,” col- lecting the plants, learning the flora, and scouring the state for the best field trip sites. To his students he was simultaneously feared and adored. His exams turned men into boys and triggered anxiety attacks even among the best. He did not give grades, you earned them. There was no one more demanding, no one more thorough, yet no one more caring and helpful. Many former students have sung his praises and I’ll share this quote from one: “Dr. Pinkava was one of the kindest scientists I have ever interacted with, a trait that sometimes goes missing in our academic world. -

Smithsonian Contri- butions to Botany, number 52, 28 pages, 3 tables, 1981.-Chromosome reports are provided for 145 populations, including first reports for 33 species and three genera, Garcilassa, Riencourtia, and Helianthopsis. Chromosome numbers are arranged according to Robinson’s recently broadened concept of the Heliantheae, with citations for 212 of the ca. 265 genera and 32 of the 35 subtribes. Diverse elements, including the Ambrosieae, typical Heliantheae, most Helenieae, the Tegeteae, and genera such as Arnica from the Senecioneae, are seen to share a specialized cytological history involving polyploid ancestry. The authors disagree with one another regarding the point at which such polyploidy occurred and on whether subtribes lacking higher numbers, such as the Galinsoginae, share the polyploid ancestry. Numerous examples of aneuploid decrease, secondary polyploidy, and some secondary aneuploid decreases are cited. The Marshalliinae are considered remote from other subtribes and close to the Inuleae. Evidence from related tribes favors an ultimate base of X = 10 for the Heliantheae and at least the subfamily As teroideae. The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences.
