In addition the research project explores the influence of the text on German- Jewish Emancipation. Venice was the first municipality in Europe to establish a special Jewish quarter. Walled off in 1516, it eventually took its name from the foundry, or ghetto, which was situated nearby. Nevertheless, the Jewish community played an important role in the city and produced such figures as Simone (Simha) Luzzatto (1583-1663) – scholar, rabbi, mathematician, and supporter of religious toleration. The principal text is Simone Luzatto's “Discorso circa il stato de gli Ebrei et in particolar dimoranti nell'inclita Città di Venezia” (“Discourse on the Condition of the Jews and, in Particular, those Dwelling in the Glorious City of Venice”). Luzzato was one of the most prominent representatives of the Jewish political thought of Early Modern Venice. -
The Artists of Les Xx: Seeking and Responding to the Lure of Spain
THE ARTISTS OF LES XX: SEEKING AND RESPONDING TO THE LURE OF SPAIN by CAROLINE CONZATTI (Under the Direction of Alisa Luxenberg) ABSTRACT The artists’ group Les XX existed in Brussels from 1883-1893. An interest in Spain pervaded their member artists, other artists invited to the their salons, and the authors associated with the group. This interest manifested itself in a variety of ways, including references to Spanish art and culture in artists’ personal letters or writings, in written works such as books on Spanish art or travel and journal articles, and lastly in visual works with overtly Spanish subjects or subjects that exhibited the influence of Spanish art. Many of these examples incorporate stereotypes of Spaniards that had existed for hundreds of years. The work of Goya was particularly interesting to some members of Les XX, as he was a printmaker and an artist who created work containing social commentary.

Émile Verhaeren
Émile Verhaeren By Stefan Zweig PART I DECIDING FORCES LES FLAMANDES—LES MOINES—LES SOIRS—LES DÉBÂCLES—LES FLAMBEAUX NOIRS—AU BORD DE LA ROUTE—LES APPARUS DANS MES CHEMINS 1883-1893 THE NEW AGE The feeling of this age of ours, of this our moment in eternity, is different in its conception of life from that of our ancestors. Only eternal earth has changed not nor grown older, that field, gloomed by the Unknown, on which the monotonous light of the seasons divides, in a rhythmic round, the time of blossoms and of their withering; changeless only are the action of the elements and the restless alternation of night and day. But the aspect of earth's spirit has changed, all that is subjected to the toil of man. Has changed, to change again. The evolution of the phenomena of culture seems to proceed with ever greater rapidity: never was the span of a hundred years as rich, as replete as that which stretches to the threshold of our own days. Cities have shot up which are as huge and bewildering, as impenetrable and as endless, as nothing else has been save those virgin forests now fast receding before the onward march of the tilled land. More and more the work of man achieves the grandiose and elementary character that was once Nature's secret. The lightning is in his hands, and protection from the weather's sudden onslaughts; lands that once yawned far apart are now forged together by the iron hoop with which of old only the narrow strait was arched; oceans are united that have sought each other for thousands of years; and now in the very air man is building a new road from country to country. -

THE EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF LIFE WRITING VOLUME IV(2015)1–29 WRITING EUROPEAN LIVES Stefan Zweig as a Biographer of Verhaeren, Rolland and Erasmus Marleen Rensen University of Amsterdam ABSTRACT The Jewish-Austrian writer Stefan Zweig (1881–1942) was a passionate biog- rapher who wrote about the lives of many influential people in European lit- erature and history. In some of these biographies the genre is consciously em- ployed as a vehicle to express an idea of Europe and foster a sense of belonging to a common European culture. His life stories of Emile Verhaeren (1910), Romain Rolland (1921) and Erasmus (1934) illustrate particularly well how Zweig portrayed artists as emblematic Europeans. As a biographer, he mediat- ed across cultures in order to highlight the transnational elements of their lives that link disparate cultures in Europe. As the practice of writing European lives affected Zweig’s sense of belonging to Europe, the portraits of Verhaeren, Rol- land and Erasmus anticipated some of the central themes of his self-narration in Die Welt von Gestern. -
Portrait of the Artist's Daughter, Élisabeth Van Rysselberghe
Théo van RYSSELBERGHE (Ghent 1862 - Saint-Clair 1926) Portrait of the Artist’s Daughter, Élisabeth Van Rysselberghe Pastel. Signed with the artist’s monogram and dated 7 août 96 VR in blue chalk at the upper right. 563 x 380 mm. (22 1/8 x 15 in.) This splendid pastel is a portrait of the artist’s only child, Élisabeth Van Rysselberghe (1890-1980), who is depicted here at the age of five. The artist made several portraits of Élisabeth, whose godfather was the Belgian writer and art critic Emile Verhaeren, from her childhood to young adulthood. (This pastel portrait was, in fact, first illustrated in an article by Verhaeren devoted to Van Rysselberghe, published in the November 1899 issue of Ver Sacrum, the official periodical of the Vienna Secession.) A similar painted portrait of her at about the same age and with the same bow in her short hair, is in a private collection. Sylvia Beach, the American-born bookseller and publisher who owned the Parisian bookshop Shakespeare and Company, once described Élisabeth as ‘a handsome, rather boyish girl’3, and she always seems to have kept her hair fairly short. In 1911 the young Élisabeth Van Rysselberghe had a brief but intense affair with the English poet Rupert Brooke, with whom she maintained a correspondence until his death from septicaemia in 1915, which left her devastated. A few years after this portrait was drawn, when Élisabeth Van Rysselberghe was nine years old, her parents met the writer André Gide, who was to become close to both Théo and his wife Maria. -
