Socio economic PROFILE :

1. Location : is one of the Coastal districts of . It lies between 86o20’ to 87o29’ East longitude and between 21o03’ to 21o59’ latitude. It is bounded by the in north, district in south, Bay of Bengal in the east and Keonjhar district in the west.

2. Climate : The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity during April and cold during December. The monsoon generally breaks during the month of June. Average annual rainfall of the district was 1487.5 m.m in 2011 which is higher than the normal rainfall (1592.0 m.m).

3. Area and Population : The district has an area of 3806 sq.kms and 23.21 lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 2.44 percent of the states territory and shares 5.53 percent of the states population. The density of population of the district is 610 per sq. kms. As against 270 person per sq.km of the state. It has 2952 villages (including 365 un-inhabited villages) covering 12 blocks, 12 Tahasils and 2 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census the schedule caste population is 478586 (20.60 %) and schedule tribe population 275678 (11.90%). The literacy percentage of the district covers 79.80 against 72.90 of the state.

4. Agriculture : During the year 2010-11, the net area sown was 214 thousand hectares against 4681 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy was 6623105 quintals, 1128 quintals wheat, 1461 quintals maize, 10914 quintals mung, 5826 quintals biri, 139 quintals of kulthi, 4172 quintals till, 19185 quintals groundnuts, 5855 quintals mustard, 27905 quintals potatoes and 44715 quintals sugarcane. During 2010-11, the total fertilizers used in the district is about 28877 MT with a breakage of 14458 MT nitrogenous, 9568 MT phosphatic and 4851 MT pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 119 Kg.

5. Irrigation : During the year 2010-11, it is reported by the District Agricultue Officer, Balasore that the irrigation potential created during Kharif and Rabi are 46.54 thousand hectares and 17.72 thousand hectares respectively through major/medium irrigation projects namely Sunel (P), Barrage Phase, Andalojoro creek, Balipada creek, Koili Baupokhari creek, Poichandia Kansabansa Creek, Salandi (P), Subarnarekha (P), Salandi MC (Ambhata ) irrigation projects in the district.

6. Education : There were 1495 nos. of primary schools, 1202 nos. of middle schools 549 nos. of secondary schools and 87 nos. of general colleges in the district during 2010-11. Besides, there are four nos. of engineering schools and six nos. of engineering colleges in the district during year 2010-11 to impart technical education.

7. Health : The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt., Private individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 2 nos of Government hospitals, 7 CHCs, 82 PHC and 266 nos. of sub-centre with 681 beds facilities 32 nos. of Homoeopathic dispensaries and 26 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district during the year 2010-11.

8. Veterinary Services : During the year 2010-11, 21 nos. of Hospitals and dispensaries, 114 nos. of livestock Aid centers were functioning in Balasore district of provide veterinary services to the people.

9. Industry and Mining : During the year 2010-11, 293 nos. of small scale industries have established with total capital investment of about Rs. 1600.4 lakhs with 1825 nos. of Employment generated in Balasore district.

10. Power : Consumption of electricity in 4 nos. of electrical division of the district during the year covers 763.389 million units and revenue villages so far electrified as on 31.3.2012 is 2557 which constitutes 98.8 % to the total villages of the district.

11. Tourist : There are 20 nos. of tourist center such as Chandipur, , , Pachalingeswar, Talasari, Raibania, Bhusandeswar, Langaleswar, Balaramgadi, Laxmannati, Balasore, Sajangarh, Kasaphal, Ayodhya, Bardhanpur, Chasakhanda, Choumokh dagra, Tripisagadia, Kupari and Inchudi identified by department of Tourism and Culture, Orissa. During 2011, the numbers of Domestic tourists were 3905852 and foreign tourists were 296 who visited the tourists spots of the district.

12. Transport & Communication : During 2010-11, 119 Kms. of National Highways, 31 Kms. of state highways, 189 Kms. Major district roads, 327 kms. of other district roads, 1360 Kms. of P.S. roads, 4282 Kms, of Gram Panchayat roads and 82 Kms of forest roads are operating in the district. Besides, 107.69 kms. of Railway lines with 14 nos. of railway stations and 4 nos. of passenger halts are continuing in the district.

13. Banking : As on March 2011, there were 135 nos. of schedule commercial banks having 3057 crores rupees deposit and 2009 crores rupees credit in the district. 
