Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract What do Plato, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Thomas Hobbes, Rene Descartes, John Locke, David Hume, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Gilbert Ryle, Immanuel Kant, and the Marquis de Sade have in common? Spanning centuries and - when it comes to Plato - millennia, they are key figures of Western philosophy who have discussed ideas of reality, knowledge, existence, the state of nature, and morality, ideas which are central to Angela Carter’s novels. In this thesis, I position Carter as a (de)philosophiser, and argue that she deconstructs the pivotal theories of Western philosophy, while also philosophising on the same concepts, contributing a female \oice to this overwhelmingly androcentric discipline. In doing so, I contribute the first in- cepth discussion of Carter’s philosophical intertextuality to Carter criticism, going beyond Carter’s explicit references that, to date, have been acknowledged by Carter scholars; although this is an original topic, the originality of my argument is boosted by my references to the archival material that comprises the Angela Carter Papers Collection. The thesis is structured according to Carter’s engagement with the range of Western blinkers aforementioned, focusing on Plato’s impact onHeroes and Villains (1969), The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman (1972) and The Passion of New Eve (1977) in Chapter One, while Chapter Two is dedicated to Carter’s analysis of Hobbes and Rousseau’s arguments in Heroes and Villains. In Chapter Three I discuss Descartes (in relation to Doctor Hoffman), Locke (vis-a-vis Shadow Dance, 1966, New Eve, and Nights at the Circus, 1984), and Hume, with reference to Several Perceptions (1968) and Love (written 1969, published 1971). Wittgenstein and Ryle’s impact on Doctor Hoffman and Carter’s time in Japan are examined in Chapter Four. The fifth and final chapter concentrates on Carter and moral philosophy, paying particular attention to Kant and Sade and discussing Shadow Dance, Several Perceptions, and Love, as well as Doctor Hoffman and The Sadeian Woman (1979). The same metaphor applies to writing a Ph.D. thesis, as a range of people - in my department and College, as well as friends and family - have been instrumental in helping me complete this work. To begin with, I would like to thank the AHRC for funding me for the last three years, as this has allowed me to dedicate my time to academic studies and to gain experience that I otherwise may have missed out on. Thank you for helping all of me. Introduction: Let’s Get Philosophical I do think fiction should be asking the great, unanswerable, adolescent questions. (Carter in Evans 1992: unpaginated) Philosophy enables us to speak plausibly of everything. (Carter 1962-63 Journal MS88899/1/88: unpaginated) Angela Carter (1940-92) is renowned for her intertextuality - the wealth of allusions to and citations from a plethora of texts, from William Shakespeare’sHamlet to Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ and Andre Breton’s Manifestoes of Surrealism, that characterise her work. These influences span a range of disciplines, from literature, film, and art, to popular culture. Carter’s ‘dizzying intertextuality’ (Britzolakis 1997: 50) is, therefore, a main feature of Carter scholarship. Early discussions of Carter’s work, for instance - such as the succession of monographs in the late 1990s by Sarah Gamble (1997), Alison Lee (1997), Linden Peach (1998),1 and Aidan Day (1998) - broadly examine Carter’s intertextuality, and emphasise the range of Carter’s interests rather than penetrate beneath the surface of specific citations and allusions. Over time, critical discussions of Carter’s writing have become more specialised, analysing the influence of particular writers, movements, and genres, upon her work. For example, Rebecca Munford’s edited collection Re-Visiting Angela Carter: Texts, Contexts, Intertexts (2006) is dedicated (as the title indicates) to providing more in-depth discussions of Carter’s intertextuality, including chapters on Jean-Luc Godard, surrealism, Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, and Edgar Allan Poe, amongst others .2 As Munford says in the Introduction, the aim of her volume ‘is to open up new dialogues about Carter’s imaginative procedures and writing strategies by offering concerted and sustained readings of some of her specific influences and intertexts’, rather than to provide ‘an exhaustive account’ of all of her interests (Munford 2006: 13). The more recent Angela Carter: New Critical Readings (2012), edited by Sonya Andermahr and Lawrence Phillips, also puts an emphasis on Carter’s intertextuality, saying that the ‘collection goes a long way towards fulfilling [Alison] Easton’s “wish list’” (Andermahr and Phillips 2012: 2).

I swallow Angela Carter whole, and then I rush to buy Alka Seltzer. The "minimalist" nouvelle cuisine alone cannot satisfy my appetite for fiction. I need a "maximalist" writer who tries to tell us many things, with grandiose happenings to amuse me, extreme emotions to stir my feelings, glorious obscenities to scandalise me, brilliant and malicious expressions to astonish me. (Almansi 217) L Vs GUIDO ALMANSI suggests, consuming Angela Carter's fic• tion is simultaneously satisfying and unsettling. This is partly because, as Hermione Lee has commented, Carter "was always in revolt against the 'tyranny of good taste'" (316). As a cham• pion of moral pornography, a cultural dissident who dared to disparage Shakespeare, and a culinary iconoclast who criticised the highly-esteemed cookery writer Elizabeth David, Carter out• raged many people. Yet this impiety also gives her work its ap• peal.1 Like the critical essays, her fiction is deliciously "improper" in that it interrogates and rejects what Hélène Cixous calls the realm of the proper, a masculine economy based on the principles of authority, domination and owner• ship — a realm in which, disempowered and dispossessed, women are without property ("Castration" 42, 50). Her fiction has an unsettling effect precisely because Carter seeks to "up• set" the patriarchal order, in part through her representation of consumption, which, by revealing and refiguring the relation• ship between women, food, and power, challenges the struc• tures that underpin patriarchy.

It will further explore how and why Carter is considered a modern author writing in the Gothic tradition. In Chapter 2 the origins of Gothic literature are introduced with its main features, themes and motives. A relevance to modern Gothic literature as well as the fiction of Angela Carter in particular will be established. Chapter 3 will introduce the works that will be analyzed in this dissertation, placing them within the context of the subject of this dissertation. Chapters 4, 5 and 6 focus on three fictional works of Angela Carter, Heroes and Villains (1969), The Magic Toyshop (1967) and Love (1971). These novels will be analyzed following the principles of Gothic literature introduced in Chapter 2. The analysis will follow a similar pattern for each of the novels, and will center around four themes of Gothic literature: Gothic boundaries, decay, imprisonment and flight. Each chapter will begin with a short introduction to the novel to be analyzed followed by a subchapter on each of the themes. Chapter 7 will focus on how aspects of sexuality and subsequently also elements of pornography are developed in each novel.

I had not heard of her before this assignment but after reading her interview with Anna Katsavos I was hooked. To me the way Katsavos described her experience with Carter and the responses Carter gave made her seem to be very personal and down to earth. Angela Carter is seen by some as one of the great writers of the twentieth century. Found on the British Council website about Angela Carter, she was born on May 7, 1940 in Eastbourne, England (“Angela Carter”). Carter attended Bristol University, and there her writing career really began. She went on to marry twice and have a son. She wrote many short stories, novels, and countless other essays. She primarily wrote non-fiction and much her writing included the role of women in society changing. She received multiple highly regarded awards such as the Somerset Maugham Award for Several Perceptions and the Cheltenham Prize for The Bloody Chamber (“Angela Carter”). In the interview with Anna Katsavos, Carter talks of her past work and how her style of writing has changed throughout her lifetime and she also explains her personal opinions about what her writings mean. I like the fact that she writes about the less favored aspects in society. I also like how she makes her writings fun and jokes around with the reader, while still having in-depth underlying ideas. Sadly, Angela Carter passed away from cancer on February 16, 1992 but her writings are still very prominent in the modern literature world.

    49 Alchemical Cities, Apocalyptic Cities 10.2478/abcsj-2020-0004 Alchemical Cities, Apocalyptic Cities: The City as an Exponent of Magical Realism and Ideology in Angela Carter’s Novels NINA MUŽDEKA University of Novi Sad, Serbia Abstract Reality in Angela Carter’s magical realist novels is depicted through the deployment of numerous picturesque details that correspond to the readers’ experiential reality, differentiating such a world from non-realist forms. Though the magical realist fictional world is akin to the one outside of the fictional reality, the mode’s strategy still differs from that of traditional realism due to the absence of a purely mimetic role. Initially serving to establish what Roland Barthes termed l’effet de reel (the effect of reality), the city in Carter’s novels is indeed constructed according to the principles of magical realism and creates plausible links between textual and extratextual realities. Further inclusion of magical, uncanny elements into such a world, in one respect, leads to the creation of ex- centric spaces that promote the position of the marginalized Other and allow alternative outlooks on life to gain prominence. A hybrid reality that is the ultimate result of the coexistence of the normal and the uncanny leads to the subversion of what Carter saw as patriarchal stereotypes, primarily due to the fact that it problematizes and ultimately negates their very foundation. In other words, if we cannot agree on the criteria for what is real, how can we trust the ultimate authority of any other criteria? The city in Carter’s novels thus acts as a suitable literary venue for revealing the author’s ideological position.

Carter believed human beings to be the pure product of history, culture and circumstances. True to her own view, the author's life - her childhood days; the influence of. her family (grandmother and parents); the war years (World War II); her Kfein^Bristol; the era in which she lived - the counter culture of the 60s; and her career as a journalist - played a significant role in making her the indomitable and richly talented writer she was. These aspects of her life'also provide an autobiographical quality to some of her novels. Her degree in Medieval literature (which lends an allegorical dimension to her novels); her vast reading of eccentric and eclectic literature, and her travels enriched her intellectual acumen and stimulated her artistic ingenuity. Carter's iconoclasm - her vision of unshackling reality; creating a new liberated world; and a Utopian vision of the freedom of woman is reflected in her writings. A break with conventions and traditions runs through her narratives. The novelist has appropriated magic realist techniques in conjunction with the Gothic nomenclature to subvert the boundaries of conventional narrative strategies; displace traditionally established discourses; and counter the established truths and values of Western culture.
