Cover Art Cantor Simon Spiro A MESSAGE FROM THE MILKEN ARCHIVE FOUNDER Dispersed over the centuries to all corners of the earth, the Jewish people absorbed elements of its host cultures while, miraculously, maintaining its own. As many Jews reconnected in America, escaping persecution and seeking to take part in a visionary democratic society, their experiences found voice in their music. The sacred and secular body of work that has developed over the three centuries since Jews first arrived on these shores provides a powerful means of expressing the multilayered saga of American Jewry. While much of this music had become a vital force in American and world culture, even more music of specifically Jewish content had been created, perhaps performed, and then lost to current and future generations. Believing that there was a unique opportunity to rediscover, preserve and transmit the collective memory contained within this music, I founded the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music in 1990. The passionate collaboration of many distinguished artists, ensembles and recording producers over the past fourteen years has created a vast repository of musical resources to educate, entertain and inspire people of all faiths and cultures. The Milken Archive of American Jewish Music is a living project; one that we hope will cultivate and nourish musicians and enthusiasts of this richly varied musical repertoire. THE DIGITAL STORY: GIVING VOICE TO THE UNHEARD IN WASHINGTON, D.C. A REPORT OF THE COMMUNITY VOICE PROJECT APRIL 2018 NINA SHAPIRO-PERL, PHD WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY BRIGID MAHER, AMBERLY ALENE ELLIS, AND MAREK CABRERA ABOUT THE PROJECT The Digital Story: Giving Voice to the Unheard in Washington, D.C. In 2008, with the support of the American University School of Communication, the AU Anthropology Department, and the Surdna Foundation, American University began a community storytelling initiative, the Community Voice Project (CVP). Under the leadership of SOC Dean Emeritus Larry Kirkman, Professors Nina Shapiro-Perl and Angie Chuang set out to capture stories of the unseen and unheard Washington, D.C., through filmmaking and reporting, while helping a new generation of social documentarians through a training process. Over the past decade, the Community Voice Project, directed by AU School of Communication Filmmaker-in-Residence Nina Shapiro-Perl, has produced more than 80 films and digital stories. These stories, created in collaboration with over 25 community organizations, have brought the voice and visibility of underserved groups to the public while providing students and community members with transformative and practical experiences. About the Center for Media & Social Impact The Center for Media & Social Impact (CMSI) at American University’s School of Communication, based in Washington, D.C., is a research center and innovation lab that creates, studies and showcases media for social impact. Led By Rabbi Stephanie and Cantor David Shomrei Torah is looking for excited members to be featured in this year’s BEATLES PURIM SCHPEIL on March 23. Everyone is welcome Saturday, February 6, 8:45 AM to participate! For many years, up to two dozen congregants have met every Saturday morning in the Kolbo room to read from the weekly We need people who can make Torah section and discuss its meaning and relevance for us in the following rehearsals: today’s world. The session goes from 8:45 to 10:15 AM, and all March 8, 6:00 – 7:30 PM CST community members are welcome to attend, weekly or just March 15, 6:00 – 7:30 PM once in a while, actively participating or just listening. Story Corps: A Review by Elisabeth Pozzi-Thanner The Oral History Review, Volume 32, No. 2 Published by the University of California Press for the Oral History Association Since 2003, ordinary people equipped with nothing else than their open hearts and ears for each other and the occasional list of questions, have been interviewing each other in a sound proof “Story-Booth” in the midst of New York’s busy Grand Central Station. Story Corps is a brainchild of radio documentary artist David Isay and “attempts to instruct and inspire people to record each other’s stories in sound”. Soon a second Story Booth will open in Manhattan at Ground Zero, collecting memories of September 11. Also, two mobile busses will start out from Washington D.C. travelling all over the United States during the next few years. They will stop in hundreds of cities and towns, documenting everyday stories and history from grassroots America for years to come. Anyone is invited to participate. All it needs is an appointment with Story Corps, a family member, a friend or acquaintance to serve as the interviewer or interviewee. For a nominal fee of $10, a facilitator will help you through the interview process in just 40 minutes. At the end, people walk away with a broadcast quality recording of their interaction, burned on a CD. Story Corps was created in partnership with the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress and receives funding support from several major foundations and corporations, from individual sponsors. National Public Radio, which supports the project, from time to time broadcasts interview excerpts in 70-second sound bites, go on the air locally and nationwide. -

SCRIPTA JUDAICA CRACOVIENSIA * Vol. 2 Kraków 2003 Magdalena Ruta Preliminary remarks on Yiddish Culture in Poland 1945-1968 Permit me to present some general remarks on Yiddish culture in Poland after the Second World War. This war brought the extermination of both Polish Jews and their culture which had flowered in the interwar period, especially in Poland, with enormous intensity. Nevertheless, a small group of Jewish writers and journalists, who had survived mostly in the Soviet Union, made an effort to later revive Yiddish culture in Poland. To my knowledge there has not been much research on this topic. Nonetheless, some historical works, in which authors concentrate mainly on the 1945-1956 period, have appeared in Poland in recent years. 1 In the Encyclopedia szel Galujot (VM) there is a 20 page article entitled “Yiddishe literarishe tetikeyt in Poyln in di yom 1946-1968” written by David Sfard, and in Encyclopedia Judaica (CD Rom Edition) one can find an entry for Poland with an article on Jewish cultural life in post war Poland by this same author. In 1987 the Bibliography of Hebrew and Yiddish Publications in Poland since 1944 was published in Israel. The same year Shlomo Straus-Marko wrote Di geshikhte fun yidishn yishuv in nokhmilkhomedikn Poyln, which contains reprints of articles from the Jewish press of 1945-1968 and reflections on subjects connected with culture (press, publicity, literary life, etc. ), but this work seems to lack a scholarly nature. There also exist remembrances referring to the epoch of 1945-1968. Among them are David Sfard’s and Hersh (Grzegorz) Smolar’s memoirs. -

Gogan To Play Jewish Again: Roots, Counterculture, and the Klezmer Revival Claire Gogan ABSTRACT Klezmer, a type of Eastern European Jewish secular music brought to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century, originally functioned as accompaniment to Jewish wedding ritual celebrations. In the late 1970s, a group of primarily Jewish musicians sought inspiration for a renewal of this early 20th century American klezmer by mining 78 rpm records for influence, and also by seeking out living klezmer musicians as mentors. Why did a group of Jewish musicians in the 1970s through 1990s want to connect with artists and recordings from the early 20th century in order to “revive” this music? What did the music “do” for them and how did it contribute to their senses of both individual and collective identity? How did these musicians perceive the relationship between klezmer, Jewish culture, and Jewish religion? Finally, how was the genesis for the klezmer revival related to the social and cultural climate of its time? I argue that Jewish folk musicians revived klezmer music in the 1970s as a manifestation of both an existential search for authenticity, carrying over from the 1960s counterculture, and a manifestation of a 1970s trend toward ethnic cultural revival. -
