Sandra Selby In September 2012, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were able to see both this flower and one named in their honour ‘Vanda William Catherine’ at the National Orchid Garden during their visit to Singapore.

Branch 519 Rushden & District www.facebook.com/rafarushden www.rafa.org.uk/rushden Newsletter May 2021 Dear Members and Friends, Well, you will see from our meeting report below, that we have taken the bull by the horns, as it were, and booked our comeback meeting for the dinner in August. I am assuming that nothing changes regarding Covid in the meantime, and that we can stick to Plan A! I will also assume, unless I hear otherwise, that we can use the attendance list from the cancelled Christmas Meal. Some of you made payments then, which I am still holding, and so I will carry these all forward, and hopefully add more people to it. As you will recall, it was a very uncertain time then, which reflected in the numbers. Now with a more positive outcome, maybe we can swell those this time. Please let me know either way, although we still have plenty of time. (famous last words!). We still don’t have anything definite regarding our future meeting venue. However, I have had contact with the Bowls Club, and we can no longer use it. That is unfortunate as it was an extremely convenient venue, but I can now renew my efforts to find an alternative. Once that is settled it will be our plan to re-engage with the speakers we were unable to welcome last year. I am pleased to report that Richard Cook, our membership secretary, has made a promising start with contacting our older members (that’s most of us!) for updates regarding their welfare.

The Painswick Beacon Sine praeiudicio Volume 35 Number 3 June 2012 Loyal Greetings Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee On this day fifty-nine years ago HM The Queen was crowned by Dr Geoffrey Fisher, Archbishop of Canterbury, in Westminster Abbey. The Painswick Beacon conveys its heartfelt best wishes to Her Majesty The then Princess Elizabeth had, on 6th February 1952, returned to the Kenyan home 'Sagana Lodge' from a night spent at Treetops Hotel, on the outward stage of a visit to Australia and New Zealand on behalf of her sick father King George VI. News had arrived that the King had died, and it was Prince Philip who communicated to her that she had acceded to the Throne. The coronation in the following year was the first time, thanks to television cameras having been permitted in the Abbey, that the nation was able to witness the pomp and spectacle of the crowning and, as if at first hand, see one of those moments when the continuum of constitutional governance is maintained. For many of us this was a treasured memory, and one we will be celebrating in diverse ways this weekend. • English Masques : with an Introduction
English Masques English Masques SELECTED AND WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY HERBERT ARTHUR EVANS, M.A. BLACKIE AND SON LIMITED 50 OLD BAILEY, LONDON; GLASGOW, BOMBAY What masquing stuff is here ? The Taming of the Shrew. >JUN 9 Printed in Great Britain by Blackie & Son, Limited, Glasgow PREFACE. The debatable land which is occupied by the sub- ject of the present volume has never been thoroughly explored by English writers. Our dramatic and musical historians, preoccupied as they were by questions of greater interest and weightier import, and tacitly subscribing to Bacon's dictum that "these things are but toyes to come among such serious observations", have been able to make but improvised and desultory excursions into its terri- tories. Hence it is that the task of making a thorough exploration has been left to a German, and we are indebted to Dr. Oscar Alfred Soergel, of the University of Halle, for the first attempt at an adequate discussion of the Masque as a whole, .in its origin, development, and decay. To his admir- able little monograph, Die Englischen Maskenspiele, Halle, 1882, I desire to express my obligations, In fixing the dates of the several performances I have consulted with advantage Mr. F. G. Fleay's valuable works on the stage. In the case of dates from January i to March 24, it should be noted that throughout the book the year is assumed to begin on January I, and not on March 25. The text of each masque is printed in full, but in the case of the Masque at Lord Haddington's VI PREFACE.

  • THE UNDERLYING CAUSES of the 1952 EMERGENCY in KENYA and a CONSIDERATION of SOME of THE'immediate RESULTS by GWENDOLEN MARY KOUR
THE UNDERLYING CAUSES OF THE 1952 EMERGENCY IN KENYA AND A CONSIDERATION OF SOME OF THE'IMMEDIATE RESULTS by GWENDOLEN MARY KOURNOSSOFF B.A., University of British Columbia, 1928 A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS in the Department of HISTORY We accept this thesis as conforming to the required standard THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA April, 1959 ii ABSTRACT The rise of the Mau Mau secret society can be attributed to underlying political, social, and economic causes. Politi• cally, it was caused by lack of training of Africans in democratic methods of government and lack of legitimate outlets for politi• cal activities. Socially, it was caused by the clash of the old and new civilizations in Kenya; the disruption of tribal institutions and authority; the inadequate educational facilities for Africans; and above all, the pronounced racial discrimina• tion, both legal and customary, dominating society in the Colony. Economically, it was caused by land-hunger, urbanization, poverty and destitution of the African people. The Emergency legislation of October 20, 1952, was passed for the purpose of suppressing the Mau Mau Society and restoring law and order. By 1958, though law and order had been restored, most of the Emergency legislation was still in effect and though some attempts had been made to alleviate the underlying causes of the disturbances, fundamentally the situation had not changed. The main grievances of the African people have not been dealt with courageously, with the result that the present situation is full of potential danger. In presenting this thesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements for an advanced degree at the University of British Columbia, I agree that the Library shall make it freely available for reference and study.
