The Shahnama can be considered what narrative theorist Margaret Somers terms an “ontological narrative.” These narratives helped Islamic dynasties such as the Samanids understand what it meant to be Iranian, and also became sources of identity for their Arab and Turkic neighbors. The term “Iran,” or “Iranshahr” as the empire of the Sasanians was known (224-651 CE), refers to a political unity which did not exist in the domains of the Samanids. How did such a concept, removed from its original geography, inform cultural identities? To what extent was the idea of “Iran” tied to a pre-Islamic geographical, political, and Zoroastrian religious concept, and how was it reinterpreted in a post-Abbasid world? If the Shahnama tells the stories of a formerly unified Iran, how was this concept reinterpreted in a geographically fractured and religiously changing world? When delving into vii the history of Khurasan and Transoxania, there are certain unanswered questions about language, history, and literature during the New Persian Renaissance that one must keep in mind as guiding questions: Why was the time ripe for a resurgence of Persian language and literature? Why were the lands of Khurasan and Transoxania the seeming location of this linguistic and literary movement? To what extent was language tied to individual, group, or cultural “identity”? Shahnama and prose histories such as those of Bal'ami, Gardizi, and Beyhaqi helped lay the foundation for identities that have persisted until present day. This is not to say that there is a static Iranian identity that has existed since some “medieval” creation. Instead, ontological narrativity allows for a fluid and dynamic sense of identity. It is the interplay between narrative and lived experience that creates a sense of who one and one's society are, and it was the Shahnama that was the preeminent such narrative for the Eastern Islamic world after the New Persian Renaissance. viii INTRODUCTION By the ninth through eleventh centuries CE, the political power of the Abbasid Islamic Caliphate, based in Baghdad, had already begun to fracture. Provincial hereditary dynasties on the frontiers of the Islamic world began to rule locally, usually while still acknowledging the religious legitimacy of the Abbasids. These dynasties also continued the Islamic project of conquest and conversion. Dynasties such as the Tahirids, Saffarids, Buyids, and Samanids reigned over the lands of the Eastern Caliphate, including Khurasan and Transoxania, extending the reach of Islam beyond the traditionally Iranian, Zoroastrian world, and into Turkish areas of Central Asia. The ghazis, religious or frontier warriors, of the Samanid dynasty fought to conquer and convert, as well as often enslave, the peoples on the extreme edge of the Muslim world.1 It was in this time and place, Samanid Khurasan, that the poet Ferdowsi began to compose his Shahnama, or “Book of Kings,” a work often considered to be the Iranian national epic. Its verses record the history of the Iranian peoples from a mythical creation of the world through the end of the Sasanian Empire in the seventh century CE.2 As well as its import as a singular creation, the Shahnama exemplifies the poetic aspects of a greater linguistic and cultural movement, which some scholars have termed the “New Persian Renaissance.” Formally supported by Samanid and later Ghaznavid patronage, this “renaissance” was an attempt to record older aspects of Iranian culture, and to make this culture applicable and acceptable in a newly Islamic world. As the term implies, it was also notable for the language in which these works were written, which are some of our earliest examples of New Persian. The breakdown of central political authority allowed the Samanids, who belonged to an ancient Iranian class of minor nobility, known as dehqans, to retain their Iranian cultural identity along with their Muslim religious identity. These works may also be traced back to the genre of Sasanian royal chronicles, or Khwaday- namag. 1 they considered to be an appropriately Iranian manner. The Samanid rulers considered themselves to be the descendants of the Iranian Sasanians, specifically the royal usurper Bahram Chobin. Despite this somewhat ignominious lineage, they apparently also considered themselves to be upholders of Iranian identity as displayed by the Sasanians. This is where the Shahnama plays a role in allowing them to both retain that identity and square it with their Islamic faith. The Shahnama is an epic poem containing the deeds and putative words of kings and heroes. Who a culture chooses to idolize, to valorize, says very much about what values and traits it considers most important, regardless of the relative antiquity or even the actual existence of such heroes and kings.

    Classical Persian Literature Bahman Solati (Ph.D), 2015 University of California, Berkeley [email protected] Introduction Studying the roots of a particular literary history enables us to better understand the allusions the literature transmits and why we appreciate them. It also allows us to foresee how the literature may progress.1 I will try to keep this attitude in the reader’s mind in offering this brief summary of medieval Persian literature, a formidable task considering the variety and wealth of the texts and documentation on the subject.2 In this study we will pay special attention to the development of the Persian literature over the last millennia, focusing in particular on the initial development and background of various literary genres in Persian. Although the concept of literary genres is rather subjective and unstable,3 reviewing them is nonetheless a useful approach for a synopsis, facilitating greater understanding, deeper argumentation, and further speculation than would a simple listing of dates, titles, and basic biographical facts of the giants of Persian literature. Also key to literary examination is diachronicity, or the outlining of literary development through successive generations and periods. Thriving Persian literature, undoubtedly shaped by historic events, lends itself to this approach: one can observe vast differences between the Persian literature of the tenth century and that of the eleventh or the twelfth, and so on.4 The fourteenth century stands as a bridge between the previous and the later periods, the Mongol and Timurid, followed by the Ṣafavids in Persia and the Mughals in India. Given the importance of local courts and their support of poets and writers, it is quite understandable that literature would be significantly influenced by schools of thought in different provinces of the Persian world.5 In this essay, I use the word literature to refer to the written word adeptly and artistically created.

Outright forgeries, including those about an alleged Turkish Divan by Nezami Ganjavi and falsified verses first published in Azerbaijan SSR, which have found their way into Persian publications, are also in the focus of the authors‖ attention. An important contribution of the book is that it highlights three rare and previously neglected historical sources with regards to the population of Arran and Azerbaijan, which provide information on the social conditions and ethnography of the urban Iranian Muslim population of the area and are indispensable for serious study of the Persian literature and Iranian culture of the period. The traditional sports and games of Tajik people, which from ancient times survived till our modern times, are: archery, jogging, jumping, wrestling, horse race, chavgon (equestrian polo), buzkashi, chess, nard (backgammon), etc. The article begins with an introduction observing the Tajik people, their history, origin and hardships to keep their culture, due to several foreign invasions. The article consists of sections Running, Jumping, Lance Throwing, Archery, Wrestling, Buzkashi, Chavgon, Chess, Nard (Backgammon) and Conclusion. In each section, the author tries to analyze the origin, history and characteristics of each game refering to ancient and old Persian literature. Traditional sports of Tajik people contribute as the symbol and identity of Persian culture at one hand, and at another, as the combination and synthesis of the Persian and Central Asian cultures. Central Asia has a rich history of the traditional sports and games, and significantly contributed to the sports world as the birthplace of many modern sports and games, such as polo, wrestling, chess etc. Unfortunately, this theme has not been yet studied academically and internationally in modern times. Few sources and materials are available in Russian, English and Central Asian languages, including Tajiki.

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kalpaklı January 2018 In the early 17th-century Ottoman Empire, a series of sociocultural, administrative, political, and economic changes were underway that left their mark on how the learned and cultural elite viewed the empire and themselves. Though contemporary sources reflect these shifts in many ways , this period’s rich corpus of invective verse , centering around the poet Nefʿī , has been understudied as a historical source. This dissertation rectifies this neglect by examining this invective corpus as a locus of rivalries and enmities revealing how those involved agonistically defined and were defined by their others, thus necessarily defining themselves in the process. Observing this process of definition and self-definition in the light of contemporary historical developments and sources, the dissertation examines invectives produced against both patrons ( i.e., vertical invective) and fellow poet/clients ( i.e., horizontal invective) in such a way as to demonstrate how the ferocity of the period’s invective verse, and reactions thereto, laid bare how Ottoman elites’ imaginary of themselves was in fact a marginalizing construct.
