Located ±23 miles from Bullhead City, AZ, ±13 miles from Fort Mohave, AZ, ±29 miles from Lake Havasu City, AZ and ±29 miles from Laughlin, NV. The city was founded in May 1883 as a result of the construction of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, which originally crossed the Colorado River at Eastbridge, Arizona three miles southeast of modern downtown Needles. The name was derived from the Needles, pointed mountain peaks at the south end of the valley with wind-blown holes in them, visible only by boat from the Colorado River. This point on the Colorado River was a poor site for such a bridge, lacking firm banks and a solid bottom. Additionally, the bridge was not of the best quality, which led to criticism that it was a "flimsy looking structure", and was an obstruction to navigation, since it lacked a draw to allow boat traffic. The flooding and meandering of the Colorado River destroyed the bridge in 1884, 1886 and 1888. Finally, the railroad surrendered to nature and built the Red Rock Bridge, a high cantilever bridge, at a much narrower point with solid rock footings ten miles downstream near modern Topock. The bridge was completed in May 1890.[7]:82 Originally a tent town for railroad construction crews, the railroad company built a hotel, car sheds, shops and a roundhouse. Within a month the town also boasted a Chinese wash-house, a newsstand, a restaurant, a couple of general stores, and nine or ten saloons. The town became the largest port on the river above Yuma, Arizona.[7]:82 The railway and the Fred Harvey Company built the elegant Neoclassical and Beaux-Arts style El Garces Hotel and Santa Fe Station in 1908, which was considered the "crown jewel" of the entire Fred Harvey chain. The landmark building is on the National Register of Historic Places and is being restored. Needles was a major stop on the historic U.S. Route 66 highway from the 1920s through the 1960s. For immigrants from the Midwest Dust Bowl in the 1930s, it was the first town that marked their arrival in California. The city is lined with motels and other shops from that era. The "Carty's Camp", which appears briefly in The Grapes of Wrath as the Joad family enters California from Arizona, is now a ghost tourist court, its remains located behind the 1940s-era 66 Motel. Qualities of Historic Route 66 Historic Route 66 is significant as the nation’s first all-weather highway linking Chicago to Los Angeles. The route was designated U.S. Highway 66 in November 1926, and was part of the first nationally designated highway system. More widely known as Route 66, the romance and nostalgia of the road was popularized in story, song, film and television. Nicknamed as the “Mother Road” in John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, Route 66 became a principle east-west highway in America’s westward expansion. Historic Route 66: “represents an outstanding example of the transition from dirt track to superhighway. Not only does Route 66 underscore the importance of the automobile as a technological achievement, but, perhaps equally important to the American psyche, it symbolized unprecedented freedom and mobility for every citizen who could afford to own and operate a car.”1 Historic Route 66 between Needles and Barstow is one of the more unique sections of its entire national route. Its distinct engineering and roadside features were adapted to the difficult Mojave Desert conditions. Its unique characteristics include the following primary elements. • The Road Itself Construction of Route 66 required some unique adaptations to the desert environment, including the extensive number of wooden trestle bridges across the desert washes and the introduction of berms to divert runoff from washing out the highway. July 22, 2011: Depart from Vienna at 9:35am to Amsterdam with KLM. Arrive in Chicago O’Hare at 2pm local time. Private shuttle service to Travelodge. Get rooms, freshen up and go for a walk through the city. Main attractions include: WILLIS TOWER, WRIGLEY FIELD, NAVY PIER and start of Route 66. (The flight and entrance to the States went without incident. A shuttle bus was rented through Limobank and was waiting for us at the airport with a CA School sign. We went to the downtown Travelodge and walked through the city. We ended up only having time to visit Willis Tower. The entrance fee was $17 a head and took about an hour and a half to see everything. Really worth the experience! The skydeck was awesome.

Box 25007 (D-108) Denver, CO 80225-0002 Subject: Technical Memorandum - Summary of Colorado River Bridge Pier Construction and Hydrogeologic Assessment Dear Mr. Yue and Ms. Innis: This letter transmits the Technical Memorandum - Summary of Colorado River Bridge Pier Construction and Hydrogeologic Assessment describing the results of historical research into the construction methods of the subsurface piers of the BNSF rail bridge, the Highway I-40 bridge, and the historic Red Rock Bridge. This memorandum also presents an evaluation of whether the bridge piers could serve as preferred groundwater flow conduits to surface water. This work was done in response to the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) letter to PG&E dated September 17, 2008 and the U.S Department of Interior (DOI) letter to PG&E dated September 17, 2008, which directed this evaluation and the establishment of a new RMP surface water sampling location at the westernmost BNSF bridge pier. The new sampling location at the downstream side of the westernmost BNSF bridge pier will be sampled over winter 2008-2009, beginning no later than December.

  • The Bridges of Topock
    The Bridges of Topock In 1883 the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad, later absorbed by the Santa Fe Railroad, built the first bridge to cross the Colorado River. This bridge was located in the area north of Sacramento Wash and up through the present day Havasu National Wild Life Refuge. It was an entirely wooden structure with a swinging draw bridge near Needles that allowed the river boats to pass through. Washed out multiple times by yearly spring flooding, and the ever changing river bed it was realigned and replaced in 1890. The Red Rock Bridge crosses the Colorado. Nearby there was a little settlement along the area where the Colorado River was narrow enough to make it feasible for the Santa Fe Railroad to build a bridge. A post office, first called Acme, and later changed to Topock, was established in 1906. (Originally the area was named Mellen after steamboat Captain Jack Mellon, though it was misspelled.) Today, the Topock Post Office is located in the Golden Shores subdivision. All that remains of Topock is a marina and a triad of bridges. 1 Santa Fe replaced the wooden bridge with the Red Rock Bridge. A daring and expensive project at the time, the bridge was one of the first steel bridges. For a construction cost of $462,434 ($9.4 million in 2003 dollars) Santa Fe's trains would pass over the longest cantilever bridge in America. The Red Rock Bridge was designed to carry two 94 ton engines pulling 3,000 pounds per linear foot. Trains grew heavier and longer.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) launched the Route 66 Initiative in 2004 to help small and economically challenged communities along Route 66 with assessment and cleanup efforts at LUST sites along the historic highway. Through this program, ADEQ assists underground storage tanks (UST) owners, operators and property owners in completing site investigations, initiating cleanup Former Route 66 motel on the outskirts of Needles, California efforts when necessary, and closing LUST sites. Since its inception, ADEQ’s Route 66 Initiative has successfully facilitated the completion of corrective actions, expediting soil and ground water cleanups, often at sites where hydrogeologic conditions have made these cleanups difficult. In addition, ADEQ has removed a large number of abandoned (orphan) USTs. Recognizing the need for a more focused approach along Route 66 in Arizona, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) partnered with ADEQ in 2005 to strengthen redevelopment opportunities for clean properties along Route 66.
