At first it appeared possible to carry out the study by spending periods of up to one month in Alsace. However, my wife insisted that we go to live in Alsace for the period required. After a great deal of time and effort our house was let to tenants for an indefinite period. After three visits to Alsace we found an apartment in Haguenau, which is a stronghold of the regional language and culture, and is situated 20 miles north of the regional capital, Strasbourg, and where I had lived previously. Being retired, the availability of time is not a problem. The investigation into the possibility of this subject as suitable for study started in November 2001, with three short investigative trips. We then moved to Alsace in October 2002, for eighteen months, returning in March 2004. A further period of one month in Strasbourg followed in October 2004. Money, however, is always a limiting factor. The period abroad was financed by the rent from my house in England, which was fortunately greater than the rent of our apartment in France. Having lived in Alsace for one year, from 1955 to 56, I have some experience of the region, dating from fifty years ago. This experience is bound to be limited. It is also dated, which may in itselfbe an advantage, in enabling comparisons with present day situations. At that time I was a recent graduate in politics, and came as an English Assistant in a French lycee in Haguenau, a small town in the northern half of Alsace. In addition to studying French at the university in Strasbourg, and to provide additional income I worked as a bus and tram conductor in the city, all as mentioned previously, above. 9 Recent statistics show that the town of Haguenau has the second largest percentage of Alsatian language speakers in the whole of the region, being 81 %, as against Selestat 1 with 83% (1997 Survey by INSEE , quoted in Schimpf 1998, 76). It was very pleasing to discover that a colleague, Paul Adolf, who was a student teacher at Haguenau in those days is now one of the acknowledged authorities on the language, having obtained two doctorates at Strasbourg, and having published a monumental dictionary.

    Napoleon’s Empire: European Politics in Global Perspective 18-20 April 2012 German Historical Institute, 8 rue du Parc-Royal, 75003 Paris Conference report by Peter Geiss, History Department, Bergische University of Wuppertal The aim of the conference on "Napoleon’s Empire: European Politics in Global Perspective", organised by GUDRUN GERSMANN (Paris) and UTE PLANERT (Wuppertal) at the German Historical Institute in Paris, was to open up and extend the Western European-dominated frame of reference that, until very recently, had left its stamp on research into Napoleonic rule. Given that the upheavals associated with Bonaparte’s political and military strategy were felt from the Ottoman Empire to the North Cape and from the Tsarist Empire to South America, there is a pressing need to take a global perspective on the Napoleonic age. Hence the conference was attended by speakers from some 25 countries and geographical regions. Their presentations provided a summary of the previous historiography as well as a survey of current research. In her introductory lecture ANNIE JOURDAN (Amsterdam) described the age of Napoleon and the French Revolution as the first field of research in French historiography to experience a massive "scène d’entrée" by foreign historians. This external perspective was initially driven by criticism of French "imperialism" and it played a crucial role in "demystifying" the Empire. Since the early 1990s, however, attention has increasingly come to focus on an analysis of transnational processes in the transition to modernity. Jourdan called for a further extension of the field of vision and closer consideration of the long-distance effects of the Napoleonic regime on the other side of the Atlantic.

    Rudolph SOCK Rudolph SOCK is Professor in General and Experimental Phonetics, and Phonology at the Phonetics Institute of Strasbourg (IPS), in the University of Strasbourg, Unistra. He is currently Director of the Linguistics, Languages and Speech Laboratory, LiLPa in this university. Rudolph Sock is also Professor at the Faculty of Arts in Pavol Jozef Šafárik University (UPJS) in Košice where he teaches within study programmes in linguistics (phonetics, phonology and the speech sciences). As a member of the Language Information and Communication Laboratory (LICOLAB) at UPJS, he works on anticipatory phonetic strategies for simultaneous and consecutive interpretation in an APPV project (APPV-15- 0307). He has carried out research works and/or lectured in internationally known research institutions and universities in Grenoble (Gipsa-Lab) in France, at the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland (Course for Speech Therapists), and at the Speech Communication Institute of Munich, in Germany. He obtained scholarship from the Fyssen Foundation (Cognitive Sciences) to carry out research on speech motor control and learning at Haskins Laboratories (Yale affiliate), New Haven Connecticut, U.S.A., from 1991 to 1992, and was Associate Researcher in this laboratory from 1991 to 1996. He has since then coordinated several French and European research grants. Résumé de l'épisode précédent : Le Racing vit une saison 1985-86 parmi les plus tumultueuses de son histoire. Irrémédiablement décramponné au classement, il entame l’année 1986 avec un nouveau président, Jean Willaume, et un nouvel entraîneur, Francis Piasecki. La neige empêche le RCS d’enchaîner après une belle victoire à Marseille, tandis que la Coupe de France fait figure d’objectif de substitution. Comme attendu, l’épaisse couche de neige garnissant les pelouses de la rue de l’Extenwoerth occasionne le report du match aller du huitièmes de finale de Coupe de France entre Strasbourg et Tours. Pour tuer le temps, le Racing tente de s’entraîner en salle ou sous les tribunes de la Meinau mais s’astreint surtout à du travail physique. Les joueurs touchent peu le ballon durant ces deux semaines de chômage technique, Francis Piasecki n’hésitant pas à organiser des séances de gainage sur les gradins. Mars s’ouvre sur le choc de l’assassinat du Premier ministre suédois Olof Palme, en pleine rue à Stockholm. Jacques CHIRAC, President of the French Republic (Strasbourg, 14 December 1999) Mr President of the Republic, It is my great pleasure to welcome you warmly to the European Parliament. You have agreed to inaugurate our new building in Strasbourg, thereby becoming the first European Union Head of State to speak in this new Chamber. This is only natural, since here in Strasbourg Parliament is France's guest. Parliament is honoured by your presence, just as it was two years ago in Brussels when King Albert II of Belgium came to inaugurate the Espace Léopold. Forty years after its inception, the European Parliament finally has its own home in this complex of buildings spread out harmoniously on either side of the confluence of two peaceful streams, like a symbol of Europe's determination to create dialogue and union against a background of peace. Just as European integration is a collective process, contributions to this project, which was, during the construction period, the largest public-sector building site in France, have come from many sides.
