Championship Report Introduction WOMEN’S SIX NATIONS WOMEN'S SIX NATIONS 2019 CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT INTRODUCTION We are very pleased to share with you the statistics guide for 2019 Women's Six Nations, the first such publication. This guide reviews the exciting Championship won by an exceptional England team and included some amazing performances that generated excitement for fans, broadcasters and sponsors and was complemented with new statistics such as dominant tackles, try origins and detailed analysis of a team’s type of play. AN EXCEPTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP STATS, the world leader in sports content and analysis collected and delivered over 120,000 statistics across the 15 men's and women's matches that were played over the six weeks of the tournament schedule. Our permanent investment in new technologies (Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) allows us to meet the challenges of tomorrow and support our customers by providing more context and relevance to sports data. STATS looks forward to expanding the scope and depth of the statistics and content provided to the 2020 Women's Women's Six Nations Championship and its partners. Roy Clements Director - STATS 2 AN EXCEPTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2019 Women'S Six Nations | Introduction 3 WOMEN’S SIX NATIONS EDITORIAL REVOLUTIONISING THE RUGBY VIEWING EXPERIENCE New dynamic statistics that provide better insights were introduced during this year’s Women's Six Nations Championship. Try origins were introduced during the 2019 Championship, showing how and where each try in the game originated, as this statistic looks at the phase of play before a try is scored and provides an insight into how much a counter-attack attributed to the try, or whether it was from lineout, free kick, scrum, free kick, tap penalty, or turnover. This helps to unearth key turning points in each game and help viewers get a deeper understanding of each team’s attacking strategy. For example, 43 of the 114 tries scored during this year's Championship originated from lineouts, with 25 of those tries in the first three phases. Lineouts provided the highest number of tries for England (18), France (12), Ireland (5) and Wales (3) - as Italy scored most of their tries from counter attacks (5) and Scotland scored three of their seven tries from tap penalties. England's dominance in the 2019 Women's Six Nations wasn't just when they had the ball. England made more dominant tackles than any other nation (80), as England's Sarah Hunter made 17 dominant tackles - more than any other player. More data than ever before was available at the breakdown, allowing analysis on the 3,161 rucks during the 2019 Women's Six Nations. While Ireland both won the most (701) and lost the fewest (15) rucks, they were the third-quickest nation at the breakdown, as their average speed (3.15) ranked behind France (3.01) and England (3.07). A team's type of play was also analysed, providing an insight into how a team utilised their possession - breaking this down into certain areas of the pitch and game states. It provided numbers into what each side did with their possessions, such as Scotland kicking during play more than any other nation (5.9%), although England were the most aggressive when it came out of kicking out of their own 22 (17.5% compared to Scotland's 15.0%). 2019 Women'S Six Nations | Editorial 5 SUMMARY tarting with the Championship statistics ranking all six teams S before moving into individual performances and data on all teams, this Championship Report will look at every aspect of the 2019 Women's Six Nations - complete with insights. 01 2019 CHAMPIONSHIP STATISTICS Page 8 6 02 03 INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES TEAM PERFORMANCES Page 46 Page 66 2019 Women'S Six Nations | Summary 7 01 2019 CHAMPIONSHIP STATISTICS RESULTS BY ROUND 10 2019 CHAMPIONSHIP TABLES 12 2019 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS 16 POINTS ANALYSIS 18 SCORING BREAKDOWN 22 ATTACK 24 DEFENCE 26 BREAKDOWN 30 SET PIECE 32 KICKING 36 DISCIPLINE 38 MATCH RECORDS 42 POSITION PROFILES 44 8 2019 Women'S Six Nations | Championship Statistics 9 RESULTS BY ROUND ROUND 1 ROUND 2 England's 44-point winning margin Italy and Wales' 3-3 draw was the was their biggest over Ireland in lowest-scoring Women's Six Nations the Women's Six Nations since a match since Wales' 3-0 win over 79-0 victory in 2002.
