Signed: ______________________ Date: 28 Jan. 2014 3 Abstract This thesis examines the representation of factory children in early Victorian industrial fiction of the 1830s and 40s. It investigates the multiple ways the factory child is represented and manipulated. Focussing on the hybrid novelistic representations of factory children, the thesis through its examinations aims at an intertextual and intermedial understanding of the mixed mode of the early Victorian industrial novel, in which a variety of ideologies, discourses, formal properties, cultural inheritances, and visual representations intersect. Positioning the fictional factory children within the relationships of the working and middle classes as represented in these novels, this thesis investigates the interrelationships of age, class, and gender, as envisioned in early industrial fiction. The representation of factory children becomes a coordinating point that connects and mediates contradictory social (class, gender, and adult–child) relationships as well as intertextual and intermedial relationships. The factory child figure, then, is not always a 'child' in the strict sense, but may have attained puberty with its transgressive potential; or may serve to embody the infantilization of the working class by the middle class. As this thesis demonstrates, writing about factory children and the transition to writing about working-class women become tactics used by middle-class male and female writers to express their social concern for lower-class people and to negotiate their own rights. Eventually, as Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna's Helen Fleetwood (1839-41) and The Wrongs of Woman (1843-44) portray problematic working-class heroines, following them from childhood into womanhood, and empower women across classes with their moral influence, the early Victorian industrial novels with factory children protagonists lead the way to later social novels by women writers with subversive heroines, such as Elizabeth Gaskell's Ruth (1853). 4 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the help of so many people in so many ways, to only some of whom it is possible to give particular mention here. Female Miners 289 9 Introduction The Industrial Revolution and its aftermath in the nineteenth century not only caused great social change in England, but brought about significant literary innovations. 1 The industrial novel, as it was later designated by modern critics, emerged as a distinct subgenre around 1840.2 This thesis focuses on the earliest group of Victorian industrial novels, published between 1839 and 1844, and examines the multiple representations of factory children which these novels centre upon. The core texts to be examined by this thesis include Frederic Montagu’s Mary Ashley, The Factory Girl, or Facts Upon the Factory (1839), Frances Trollope’s The Life and Adventures of Michael Armstrong, Factory Boy (1839-40), and Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna’s Helen Fleetwood (1839-41). What fuelled the creation of the early industrial narratives was a campaign for textile factory reform: the 'Ten Hours Movement'. The Ten Hours Movement was a wave of political activism, lasting throughout the 1830s and into the 1840s, which called for legislation to limit the number of daily working hours in mills.3 As the demand of this popular short-time movement was initially made on behalf of young workers and then females, abuse of 1 For studies in social, economic, or labour history of the Industrial Revolution, see, for example, E.

Consequently, modern readers have tended to focus on how the Victorians identified themselves with slavery’s abolition and either denied their past involvement with slavery or imagined that slave past as insurmountably distant. “Willing Slaves: The Victorian Novel and the Afterlife of British Slavery” argues, however, that colonial slavery survived in the Victorian novel in a paradoxical form that I term “willing slavery.” A wide range of Victorian novelists grappled with memories of Britain’s slave past in ways difficult for modern readers to recognize because their fiction represented slaves as figures whose bondage might seem, counterintuitively, self-willed. Nineteenth-century Britons produced fictions of “willing slavery” to work through the contradictions inherent to nineteenth-century individualism. As a fictional subject imagined to take pleasure in her own subjection, the willing slave represented a paradoxical figure whose most willful act was to give up her individuality in order to maintain cherished emotional bonds. This figure should strike modern readers as a contradiction in terms, at odds with the violence and dehumanization of chattel slavery. But for many significant Victorian writers, willing slavery was a way of bypassing contradictions still familiar to us today: the Victorian individualist was meant to be atomistic yet sympathetic, possessive yet sheltered from market exchange, a monad most at home within the collective unit of the family.

The way Mrs Trollope wrote, it felt like a letter from a friend about her trip, but she just happened to be writing from 1830. I am interested in the history of how every day people lived, and what things looked like and felt like, more than I am interested in just what war happened when (although it's important to know that too). I also enjoyed how she contrasted the habits of the Americans vs the habits of her upper class English world. She found the Americans to be hard working in their pursuit of their livelihood, maybe a bit too religious, and somewhat uninterested in the finer things in life, like the arts and literature. She also thought Americans were overly proud of their young country's accomplishments and too quick to defend what they saw as their American superiority.

Master of Arts (English), August, 1992, 106 pp., works cited, 47 titles. Although Anthony Trollope has traditionally been considered an anti-feminist author, studies within the past decade have shown that Trollope's later novels show support for female power and sympathy for Victorian women who were dissatisfied with their narrow roles in society. A feminist reading of two of his earliest novels, The Warden and Barchester Towers, shows that Trollope's feminism is not limited to his later works. In The Warden, Trollope acclaims female power and "wonan's logic" through female characters and the womanly warden, Septimus Harding. In Barchester Towers, Trollope continues to support feminism through his positive portrayals of strong, independent women and the androgynous Harding. Newton Rayzor Professor, Department Chair Religious Studies HOUSTON, TEXAS August 2011 ABSTRACT The Victorian Religious Novel: Conversion, Confession, and the Marriage Plot by Eun Young Koh Victorian scholars of fiction have hitherto largely overlooked that fiction was an important site for Victorian authors and readers to engage in open discussion of religious issues in the Victorian period, often known, even to itself, as the "Age of 'Faith and Doubt."' Along with sermons and religious tracts, which often directly addressed popular audiences, fiction became one of the most popular arenas for debating theology and religious practices. My project aims to revive interest in the religious novel genre by defining the genre, positioning it within its cultural context, and looking at how it engages in active and reciprocal conversations with other genres, fictional and nonfictional. This new approach reveals how the religious novel, long derided or ignored by critics, often leads the way with narrative innovations. Most interestingly, the religious novel, whose alternative name is tellingly the "theological romance," embraces and adopts one of the most popular plot lines of the Victorian novel tradition, namely the marriage/courtship plot, and develops it into the post-marriage plot, a plot that focuses on and examines marital life.
