Its main objective is to promote interdisciplinary studies by providing an intellectual platform for international scholars to exchange ideas and perspectives. Each volume is focused on a pre-selected theme in the fields of arts, humanities, the social sciences, and contemporary culture. Preference is given to topics of general interest that lend themselves to an interdisciplinary approach. Manuscripts should conform to the MLA style. Submissions may be made by e-mail to the editor at [email protected]. The preferred language is English. The journal is published both online and in print, in November-December of each year. In response to what some have dubbed “twenty-first century problem,” studies on foreignness have increased considerably. This special volume contributes to the understanding of this debate, by examining various aspects of the reality and representation of foreignness in the humanities.1 The articles are grouped into three sections. In part I, “A Country of One’s Own,” three authors deal with the issue of assimilation and conversion as experienced by three women. Marilyn Button explores Frances Milton Trollope’s experience of social ostracism and prejudices in her personal and professional life as both a woman and a traveling writer. Bernadette McNary-Zak examines how Dorothy Day identifies and reframes alienation in her adopted religious worldview within a socialist framework. Abeer Aloush addresses the case of identity construction of Jewish Egyptian singer and actress Layla Murad during the reign of President Gamal Abdel Nasser. In part II, “On the Margins,” five authors analyze what the Algerian writer Y.B. calls the “intranger[s]”2, those who are excluded in their own country. The Lincoln Humanities Journal Fall 2017 Volume 5 8 Division of the British Southern Cameroons from 1916 to 1961 and their purpose of subjecting particular regions and groups to multiple layers of strangeness. Edward Egbo Imo uses the example of absurdity in Ola Rotimi’s Holding Talks to illustrate the metaphysical anguish and psychological trauma that alienate a section of Nigerian society. Shaun Friday affirms Longfellow’s relevance and modernity in today’s society’s and reevaluates his faith- fueled advocacy for victims of colonial power across ethnic, religious, and gender boundaries. In his article “Footnotes and Dictators,” Mark Edwin Peterson shows how marginalization is literally inscribed in the structure of the book as demonstrated by the examples of Chicano authors, Junot Diaz and Salvador Plascencia. William J. Donohue compares the experience of minority students in composition classes to the marginalization of Meursault in The Stranger of Albert Camus. The third section, titled “Je suis autre/I Is Neither This Nor That,” continues with the motif of the “intrangers,” and discusses more specifically post-colonial alienation in contemporary France. The first author, Mina Apic, examines in Les désorientés d’Amin Maalouf, the predicament of feeling alienated from one’s own identity and culture, and the struggle to reconcile the ideal of cosmopolitism with the duty of loyalty to one’s own country of origin. Jennifer Boum Make traces the cross-cultural transfers prompted by the main character’s relocation from the Antilles to France in Gisèle Pineau’s Exile According to Julia. Abeer Aloush analyzes, in Leila Sebbar’s Le Chinois vert d’Afrique, the collective trauma and the spatial dispossession of the beur or French-born youth whose parents or grands-parents are immigrants from North Africa. The beur’s experience of alienation and revolt is also the subject of Eïmma Chebinou’s essay on French cinema and specifically La Haine (hate) and La Désintégration, which highlight the correlation between failure of integration, identity crisis and religious radicalization. The last section, “Student Essay,” gives voice to an undergraduate rising scholar, Tessa Gray, who discusses the ways in which the United States creates and enforces its “exclusivity” by marginalizing non-whites. The Lincoln Humanities Journal Fall 2017 Volume 5 9 It is hoped that this volume, which coincides with the 75th anniversary of Albert Camus’ famous novel, The Stranger, contributes to more understanding of the plight of those excluded, marginalized, and categorized as “not one of us”.     Willing Slaves: The Victorian Novel and the Afterlife of British Slavery Lucy Sheehan Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2016 © 2016 Lucy Sheehan All rights reserved ABSTRACT Willing Slaves: The Victorian Novel and the Afterlife of British Slavery Lucy Sheehan The commencement of the Victorian period in the 1830s coincided with the abolition of chattel slavery in the British colonies. Consequently, modern readers have tended to focus on how the Victorians identified themselves with slavery’s abolition and either denied their past involvement with slavery or imagined that slave past as insurmountably distant. “Willing Slaves: The Victorian Novel and the Afterlife of British Slavery” argues, however, that colonial slavery survived in the Victorian novel in a paradoxical form that I term “willing slavery.” A wide range of Victorian novelists grappled with memories of Britain’s slave past in ways difficult for modern readers to recognize because their fiction represented slaves as figures whose bondage might seem, counterintuitively, self-willed. Nineteenth-century Britons produced fictions of “willing slavery” to work through the contradictions inherent to nineteenth-century individualism. As a fictional subject imagined to take pleasure in her own subjection, the willing slave represented a paradoxical figure whose most willful act was to give up her individuality in order to maintain cherished emotional bonds. This figure should strike modern readers as a contradiction in terms, at odds with the violence and dehumanization of chattel slavery. But for many significant Victorian writers, willing slavery was a way of bypassing contradictions still familiar to us today: the Victorian individualist was meant to be atomistic yet sympathetic, possessive yet sheltered from market exchange, a monad most at home within the collective unit of the family.

Issue 1, Spring 2014 Understanding French Foreign and Security Policy towards Africa: Pragmatism or Altruism Abdurrahim Sıradağ1 Abstract France has deep economic, political and historical relations with Africa, dating back to the 17th century. Since the independence of the former colonial countries in Africa in the 1950s and 1960s, France has continued to maintain its economic and political relations with its former colonies. Importantly, France has a special strategic security partnership with the African countries. It has intervened militarily in Africa more than 50 times since 1960. France has especially continued to use its military power to strengthen its economic, political and strategic relations with Africa. For instance, it deployed its military troops in Mali in January 2013 and in the Central African Republic in December 2013. Why does France actively get involved in Africa militarily? This research will particularly uncover the main motivations behind the French foreign and security policy in Africa. In 2016 there were 110 000 new cases of HIV among 15 to 24-year-olds1. The aim of this study is to describe and analyse perceptions of HIV and HIV prevention among Xhosa youth in the township of Langa, Cape Town. In order to study this, I focus on the organisation loveLife and their employed peer educators called groundBREAKERs (gBs). To gain knowledge on what fuels the HIV epidemic in this setting I will examine their thoughts and notions of HIV/AIDS, sexuality and sexual behaviour in relation to the information that is available to them. Examining the socio-cultural context of HIV/AIDS is important to understand the spread and why HIV is not declining sufficiently in response to HIV preventative efforts. This thesis is based on ten weeks of fieldwork at loveLife’s Y-Centre in Langa. The material was gathered through semi-structured interviews and participant observation. To analyse the drivers for the spread of HIV among Xhosa youth an analytical tool of gender roles, with a main focus on masculinity, has been utilized. Bush’s decision to go to war against Iraq. She was from the West Province, or the Bamileke Region, the portion of the Grassfields that fell under French administration from 1919 to 1960.1 She was unschooled but spoke fluent French, pid- gin English, and her mother tongue, Medumba. She was against the US invasion and, referring to the United Nations Security Council’s vote against military intervention in Iraq, she said, “But all the other villages did not want to go to war.” Her grandchildren laughed at her use of the term village, but her word choice and the youngsters’ reac- tion to it revealed a generational, linguistic memory gap.
