ABSTRACT “Our Grand Narrative of Women and War”: Writing, and Writing Past, a Gendered Understanding of War Front and Home Front in the War Writing of Hemingway, O’Brien, Plath, and Salinger Julie Ooms, Ph.D. Mentor: Luke Ferretter, Ph.D. Scholars and theorists who discuss the relationship between gender and war agree that the divide between the war front and the home front is gendered. This boundary is also a cause of pain, of misunderstanding, and of the breakdown of community. One way that soldiers and citizens, men and women, on either side of the boundary can rebuild community and find peace after war is to think—and write—past this gendered understanding of the divide between home front and war front. In their war writing, the four authors this dissertation explores—Ernest Hemingway, Tim O’Brien, Sylvia Plath, and J.D. Salinger—display evidence of this boundary, as well as its destructive effects on persons on both sides of it. They also, in different ways, and with different levels of success, write or begin to write past this boundary and its gendered understanding of home front and war front. Through my exploration of these four authors’ work, I conclude that the war writers of the twentieth century have a problem to solve: they still write within an understanding of war that very clearly genders combatants and noncombatants, warriors and home front helpers. However, they also live and write within a historical and political era that opens up a greater possibility to think and write past this gendered understanding.

THAILAND’S MOMENT OF TRUTH A SECRET HISTORY OF 21ST CENTURY SIAM #THAISTORY | VERSION 1.0 | 241011 ANDREW MACGREGOR MARSHALL MAIL | TWITTER | BLOG | FACEBOOK | GOOGLE+ This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. This story is dedicated to the people of Thailand and to the memory of my colleague Hiroyuki Muramoto, killed in Bangkok on April 10, 2010. Many people provided wonderful support and inspiration as I wrote it. In particular I would like to thank three whose faith and love made all the difference: my father and mother, and the brave girl who got banned from Burma. ABOUT ME I’m a freelance journalist based in Asia and writing mainly about Asian politics, human rights, political risk and media ethics. For 17 years I worked for Reuters, including long spells as correspondent in Jakarta in 1998-2000, deputy bureau chief in Bangkok in 2000-2002, Baghdad bureau chief in 2003-2005, and managing editor for the Middle East in 2006-2008. In 2008 I moved to Singapore as chief correspondent for political risk, and in late 2010 I became deputy editor for emerging and frontier Asia. I resigned in June 2011, over this story. I’ve reported from more than three dozen countries, on every continent except South America. I’ve covered conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Lebanon, the Palestinian Territories and East Timor; and political upheaval in Israel, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand and Burma. Of all the leading world figures I’ve interviewed, the three I most enjoyed talking to were Aung San Suu Kyi, Xanana Gusmao, and the Dalai Lama.

SUGAR-SWEETENED BEVERAGE MARKETING UNVEILED VOLUME 1 VOLUME 2 VOLUME 3 VOLUME 4 THE PRODUCT: A VARIED OFFERING TO RESPOND TO A SEGMENTED MARKET A Multidimensional Approach to Reduce the Appeal of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages This report is a central component of the project entitled “A Multidimensional Approach to Reducing the Appeal of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSBs)” launched by the Association pour la santé publique du Québec (ASPQ) and the Quebec Coalition on Weight-Related Problems (Weight Coalition) as part of the 2010 Innovation Strategy of the Public Health Agency of Canada on the theme of “Achieving Healthier Weights in Canada’s Communities”. This project is based on a major pan-Canadian partnership involving: • the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) • the Fédération du sport francophone de l’Alberta (FSFA) • the Social Research and Demonstration Corporation (SRDC) • the Université Laval • the Public Health Association of BC (PHABC) • the Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA) The general aim of the project is to reduce the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages by changing attitudes toward their use and improving the food environment by making healthy choices easier. To do so, the project takes a three-pronged approach: • The preparation of this report, which offers an analysis of the Canadian sugar-sweetened beverage market and the associated marketing strategies aimed at young people (Weight Coalition/Université Laval); • The dissemination of tools, research, knowledge and campaigns on marketing sugar-sweetened beverages (PHABC/OPHA/Weight Coalition); • The adaptation in Francophone Alberta (FSFA/RSEQ) of the Quebec project Gobes-tu ça?, encouraging young people to develop a more critical view of advertising in this industry.

  • Beyond Syncretism: Hybridization of Popular Religion in Contemporary Thailand
461 Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, 36 (3), pp 461–487 October 2005. Printed in the United Kingdom. © 2005 The National University of Singapore doi:10.1017/S0022463405000251 Beyond Syncretism: Hybridization of Popular Religion in Contemporary Thailand Pattana Kitiarsa This article challenges the dominant paradigm of ‘inclusive syncretism’ in the study of Thai religion. By taking the worship of multi-original deities in the popular spirit- medium cults in contemporary Thailand as a case study, it argues that practitioners and specialists working on Thai religious studies need to refresh and update their analytical paradigm to incorporate the concept of ‘hybridization’. Syncretism is a proven analytical model, particularly in studies of Thai Buddhism, but it is neither a perennial nor a flawless one. It cannot be denied that Thai religion by and large has maintained its complex syncretic outlook. However, it is argued here that the focal point for students and specialists should be not the harmonious continu- ities and transformations of a syncretistic religious system, but rather the ruptures and breaks from its seemingly homogenous tradition. Based on a close consideration of the ‘parade of supernaturals’ flooding spirit-shrine altars in popular spirit-medium cults since the 1980s, I propose that Thailand’s popular beliefs and religiosity in the past few decades have been undergoing a significant degree of ‘subtle hybridization’, where religious commodification and capitalist consumerism have been increasingly prominent.1 Pattana Kitiarsa is a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore. His e-mail contact is [email protected] The original version of this article was presented at the International Conference on Transnational Reli- gions: Intersections of the ‘Local’ and ‘Global’, organized by the Asia Research Institute, National Univer- sity of Singapore, 19–20 July 2004.
