Spring Term 2018, issue 3 HEADLINES

EDUCATION EDUCATION EDUCATION

Our first Future Schools’ information evening provided an opportunity to listen to Richard Cairns, Headmaster at and talk to our senior professionals from twenty-one excellent schools. Mr Cairns’ outstanding talk highlighted six areas parents should consider when selecting 13+ education. Parents then had the opportunity to ‘visit’ a number of schools. Thank you to all the schools who visited, details of which can be found in this newsletter. I was delighted to see so many of our parents attend this event, and we hope that it proved to be very useful and opened up further possibilities.

Last weekend we had a very successful visit to Bede’s at their Galactic Challenge, where we were just pipped at the post. Our theme for assemblies this week has covered reaching and maximising our potential. Mr Stacey drew our attention to so many alumni and their professional success in sport and music, asking the question ‘Why it could be me?’ Year 3S kept us informed on how to look after our teeth through a TV style interview. We must all floss twice a day. On Friday we held a celebratory assembly led by Year 1 & 2 who shared with us their latest learning from Mermaids to castles. Some wonderful poetry and art work – well done.

Well done to our of our Pre-Prep pupils who were so sensible when practising the ‘Lockdown’ procedure today.

STAFF NEWS

We are sad to say goodbye to Mr Beaton as he makes his way to a new Rong Qiao-Sedbergh School, in Fuzhou, China. Mr Beaton is due to take up his new position in September. We would like to thank him for all the contribution he has made to the life of and wish him every success with the next steps of his career.

Also we are pleased to announce that Mr Horner’s wife had a little boy on Wednesday morning called Elliott. Congratulations to them all.

Spring Term 2018, issue 3 PRE-PREP REPORTS & GRADE CARDS

Please be aware that over the first weekend of half term the electricity power to the school will be cut off until Monday 12 February. As a result of this our School Portal will be offline during this period, therefore we will not be releasing Reports and Grade cards until 4pm on the Monday afternoon. This situation has oc- curred due to our exciting swimming pool development, which we are glad to say is nearly complete.

We apologise for the situation and hope that you will understand our predicament.

BOOK WEEK 26 FEBRUARY– 2 MARCH

We are looking forward to our annual celebration of book week during the week beginning Monday 26 February. There will be number of fun activities taking place in school during the week and on World Book Day, Thursday 1 March, Prep & Pre-Prep children (and staff!) are invited to come into school dressed up as a story book character.

Children in Year 1&2 have been requested to come in costume related to the topics they are studying this term. For Year 1 this is pirates and mermaids and for Year 2 it is castle characters! In Early Years, it has been decided that children can share the stories that they are particularly interested in. Therefore, the costume choice is entirely their own.

Children are also asked bring in a copy of their favourite book on that day or perhaps a copy of the book their costume is from.

CONGRATULATIONS

To the following children who have completed the following Lexia levels: William Level 13. George Level 7. Gabriel Level 12 Luca Level 17

The following pupils were handed certificates and badges in assembly for ‘Completing the Bede’s Galac- tic Challenge’: Jack Henry James Sam Dylan Abigail Jolyon

Well done to Dylan for being awarded a Blue Peter Badge for sending the Blue Peter team a home made Christmas card with pictures of the presenters on the front.

Spring Term 2018, issue 3 YEAR 2 TONBRIDGE CASTLE VISIT

As part of Year 2’s topic ‘Turrets and Tiaras’ we visited Tonbridge Castle last week. It was a Motte and Bailey castle which has had a stone castle built on it since the 11th century. We explored the stone keep and learnt all about the features of a castle such as murder holes, the portcullis, arrow slits, and the Great Hall. We played some old castle games and climbed up the motte to keep a look out for any enemies! It was a fantastic trip, enjoyed by all.

Spring Term 2018, issue 3 BEDE’S GALATIC CHALLENGE

Students from Years 7 & 8 took part in Bede’s School Galactic Challenge Day on Saturday 20 January. This is the third time the competition has been held and our participating students were excited about the brief they had received just 24hours previously: they would be building a subterranean Martian research base in the year 2060. Our students were put into a company called Solaris along with students from three other schools. In total there were four competing companies totally just over 100 Y7 & 8 students. After a welcome speech from the Deputy Head of Bede’s the students were whisked off by Sixth Formers who were to act as their CEO for Solaris. The accompanying staff were told clearly that we were not to help in any way – the students were on their own.

The CEO organised elections for a president for Solaris from the Y7 & 8s, then the president held elections for section chiefs: Operations, Systems, Automation and Human. The students then hit the ground running and had 4 ½ hours to produce a PowerPoint detailing the construction of a subterranean research centre to house 400 people. The students had to look at current technology and developing technology that might be useful in making such a base. Estimation of cost was entertaining and despite price tags of $5 billion in some cases it was pointed out during judging that the ISS has cost $1 billion to date.

At the end of a very busy and full day all the companies had to present their PowerPoint to a panel of judges made up from academia, industry and the founder of the of Space Design Competition. Despite a very thorough presentation and some excellent answers to some tricky questions Solaris was pipped to the post by another company. All the students had a great day and the parents who attended the judging and presentations were proud of what they had achieved.

“I enjoyed working in a team of people I didn’t know”. “It was great to work independently without any teacher helping”. “It was good fun”. “It was my second time at Galactic Day and I really looked forward to the day – it didn’t disappoint”. “I was happy the challenge was set on Mars”. “I learnt a lot, especially about energy and conditions on Mars”.
