Nursery News

We have finally seen the first signs of spring as the crocus are in bloom and the sun has been shining (although briefly). We man- aged to get outside to do some planting, draw long, wavy bean- stalks in chalk on the playground all the way up to the giant’s house, audition for ‘Battle Abbey Nursery’s Got Talent’ contest and develop our physical skills moving in different ways around the obstacle course.

World Book Day was a huge success, we had an array of story characters from our favourite and most loved books. We had guest appearances from The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Alice in Wonderland, Little Miss Sunshine, Sleeping Beauty and The Tiger Who Came To Tea. Thank you to our families for taking the time to support our celebration of reading. World Book Day is a registered charity with the mission of getting us all reading and to help with this, your child will receive a book voucher .

Parents Evening for Acorns and Oaks will be held on Wednesday 18th March where you can meet with your child’s key worker to discuss their progress and development. Please book a conveni- ent time on the booking forms in the entrance. Oaks are to book their slot outside the Oaks classroom. To celebrate Mothers’ Day this year, we would like to invite our mum’s (or aunts or grandmothers if dropping off/collecting) to a Mothers Day breakfast or afternoon tea. An invite will be emailed shortly. Could you please book your breakfast or afternoon tea ASAP for catering numbers. Unfortunately we are able to offer this to the children attending on this day only.

Prep School and Nursery have their Open Day coming up, please pop along to see us. The staff will be on hand to answer any questions and give you a tour of the facilities. This is a great time if your child is off to school in September and you would like a bit more information and to meet Mrs Nessling, the Reception teacher.

Much fun was had with the pancake races on the 25th Prep School News February making the most of the temporarily dry weather!

The children in Year three had an exciting visit to the garden centre where they looked at many different plants - including those that are bee and butterfly friendly.

They asked lots of different questions and had a lovely time!

Year 4 went to the De la War Pavillion to attend ‘Share a Story Live’. In line with our Eco drive the children walked from school and were rewarded with stories from 5 different authors.

We are very proud of Sophia who has donated 9” of her beautiful hair to Little Princess Trust, well done Sophia.

Mathemagical Results at Battle Abbey School

For the third year in a row the Year 11 Maths results at Battle Abbey School have exceeded all expectations and continued to improve. Every single student in the school achieved a very respectable result, with 72% of students being awarded a grade 7-9 and a phenomenal 81% of students achieved a grade 6-9. When looking at the top marks, 1 in 5 students secured a grade 9 – which for a non-selective school is simply outstanding.

Farouk Tumi, Head of Maths is delighted with the results “I am incredibly proud of all of the students for the sheer dedication and hard work they put in to achieve these results, especially those who have found that maths does not come naturally to them. It is also fantastic to see another year of improvements in the Maths results, highlighting the continuing improvements that the department is making”.

Headmaster David Clark says: “To be able to achieve a new record set of results for three years in succession is nothing short of sensational, especially when you consider just how strong previous results have been. The maths department put in a huge amount of additional teaching, after school and during the holidays, and great credit should go to Farouk and his team for being able to engage the pupils and help them maximise their potential. The variety of teaching styles the Maths department feature and the related results are securing the department, and indeed the school, plaudits from across the region. Seeing the students’ faces as they found out their results was a wonderful experience”.

Macbeth at the Abbey

On Thursday 27th February, the Box Clever Theatre company came to Battle Abbey School to perform Macbeth to students in Years 10 and 11. For many, this was an opportunity to revise the text ahead of the exams in May. For the drama students, the non-naturalistic nature of the play no doubt provided some ideas either for their own drama or when writing about dramatic techniques. The production was a high-octane performance lasting an hour and focusing on crucial scenes. The actors mixed modern English and storytelling, interwoven with quotations from the text. This devel- oped the students’ understanding of not only plot but also how the central characters evolved during the play. The afternoon culmi- nated in a workshop. Students looked at how to perform a staged fight. The performers illustrated how adding actions to quotations bolstered their meaning, making them more memorable. There were useful tips too for revising the text.

Talking to students afterwards, they enjoyed the production be- cause it was an ‘immersive experience’, ‘active’, ‘powerful’, ‘intense’ and ultimately ‘entertaining’. The fact that the play was performed in the round added to their engagement.

Thank you FOBAS for your generous contribution to this event. The students truly benefited from it.

On the 10th February, the Year 13 Economics group travelled to London to an economics conference lead by Paul Krugman, columnist of the New York times, to assist them in their essay writing. The conference consisted of Krugman discussing many different economic theories such as so called “Zombie ideas”; an idea which refuses to die and eats at the brain, (fuelled by money). He also tackled global issues such as the statement “despite the want to move to renewable energy resources, many are employed by firms that depend on fossil fuels”. He finished on the topic of money claiming that “money is just money” and “the only way to achieve full employment is by printing money!” The trip provided the class with a new look on what they can discuss in their essays and provided them with more lines of argument to enhance their essays. Dear Parents

It is probably no surprise that over 78% of our parents say that a personal recommendation from a current parent directly led them to join Battle Abbey School. Our parents are a fantastic ‘sales force’ operating on our behalf in the area and we thought it was time to recognise the superb job you do. To this end we are delighted to announce that we are starting our first ever ‘Recommend a Friend’ campaign for children of Prep School age.

We hope this will allow more families to take advantage of the new Wrap Around Care initiative (from 07:45 to 17:45 hours) and the all-inclusive fee structure. Further details are available from www.battleabbeyschool.com/prep

If you are an existing Battle Abbey School parent who refers a family to join our Prep School we think it is only fair to say a big ‘Thank You’. Essentially this means that on final sign up of the new family (in Reception to Year 6), you will receive a payment of £300 as soon as the first term’s fees have been paid.

The scheme is initially to be run for the remainder of this academic year only so all year groups stated are current academic year groups.

If you have any questions about the scheme please contact our Bursar (Sue Bonell) on [email protected]

Best regards

We are delighted to announce that Simon Leigh will be delivering a presentation to our parent body on Tuesday 17th March.

Simon comes to us highly recommended and has spoken at over 100 schools across the UK and throughout Europe. He trained as an addiction counsellor qualifying with a Masters Degree in Addiction Counselling and has been both accredited by, and an examiner for, The Federation of Drug & Alcohol Professionals. His clinical experience led him to become the Treatment Director and Director of Outpatient Services for an addiction rehab facility in Central London, before opening a private practice.

He will be speaking to Years 10 - 13 before addressing the parent body in the evening. His fast paced, hard hitting, fact based talk will cover things to look out for in your child’s behaviour, some differences between recreational use and addiction, some suggested do’s and don’ts if you suspect your child is taking drugs and a detailed overview of the most commonly used drugs by teenagers today. This will include what they look like, how they are administered, what the effects are and what the dangers are.

The availability, strength and social acceptance of illicit drugs, together with the types of drugs being used, has changed enormously over the past 30 years and the evening promises to be an informative and relevant event.
