Serie orientale Vol. 57 – Giugno 2021 Notes on Musical Imagery in the Poetry of Jāmi Alessia Dal Bianco Independent Scholar Abstract The poet Nur-al-Din ʿAbd-al-Raḥmān Jāmi (1414-92) is known to have been proficient in music theory; he also wrote a Resāla-ye musiqi (Treatise on Music Theory). In his poems he displayed an extensive and precise use of musical terms. To probe fur- ther into the elements of musical imagery, I scanned through his maṯnavis Haft awrang (The Seven Thrones) in search of lines dedicated to musical modes, instruments, and performers. Considering that musical imagery had a long-established tradition before his time, I pursued a comparative investigation and commented on some lines by way of examples.     Culture and Cultural Politics Under Reza Shah Culture and Cultural Politics Under Reza Shah presents a collection of innovative research on the interaction of culture and politics accompanying the vigorous modernization program of the first Pahlavi ruler. Examining a broad spectrum of this multifaceted interaction it makes an important contribution to the cultural history of the 1920s and 1930s in Iran, when, under the rule of Reza Shah Pahlavi, dramatic changes took place inside Iranian society. With special reference to the practical implementation of specific reform endeavors, the various contributions critically analyze different facets of the relationship between cultural politics, individual reformers, and the everyday life of modernist Iranians. Interpreting culture in its broadest sense, this book brings together con- tributions from different disciplines such as literary history, social history, ethnomusicology, art history, and Middle Eastern politics. In this way, it combines for the first time the cultural history of Iran’s modernity with the politics of the Reza Shah period. Challenging a limited understanding of authoritarian rule under Reza Shah, this book is a useful contribution to existing literature for students and scholars of Middle Eastern History, Iranian History, and Iranian Culture. Dr Bianca Devos is Assistant Professor/Lecturer at the Center for Near and Middle East Studies at the University of Marburg (Germany). Her main fields of research are Iran’s modern history, particularly the press and early modern entrepreneurship, and literary history. Hayatıyla ilgili fazla bilgi bulunmayan Kânî Efendi, gençliğinin ilk dönemlerinde derbeder bir hayat sürmüş ve o yıllarda nükteli bir üslupla yazmış olduğu eserleri ile edebî muhitlere sesini duyurabilmiştir. Kanî Efendi, coşkun ve sanatkâr ruha sahip bir şahsiyettir. Üzüntüsünü, sevincini; manzum ve mensur olarak eserlerinde dile getirmiş, ince zevki, derin hayâl gücü ve benimsediği sanat anlayışını şiirlerine de yansıtmıştır. Şüphesiz çok yönlü bir kişiliğe sahip olan Kânî Efendi’nin dîvânını farklı açılardan ele almak mümkündür ancak bu çalışmada dîvânında mȗsikî ile ilgili unsurlar ve bu unsurların şiirine yansımaları ele alınacaktır. Kânî Divanı’nda üflemeli, vurmalı ve telli mȗsikî âletlerinin adlarına; Hüseynî, Uşşâk, Muhayyer, Nevâ ve Hisâr gibi bazı mȗsikî makamlarına, tel (evtâr), kulak, perde, reg, târ gibi mȗsikî âletlerinin aksamıyla ilgili terimlere ve ney, tanbur, sâz, davul (tabl), çeng, def, kus, kemân ve rebâb, ud, kudüm, bang, çârpâre gibi mȗsikî aletlerine sıklıkla rastlanılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada Kânî dîvânı mȗsikî terimleri açısından tetkik edilmiş, ilgili terimler tespit edilmiş ve bu terimlerin şiir içerisindeki bağlamları ve kullanım alanları ifade edilmeye çalışılmıştır. MAMU is fortunate to have as part of our team Dr Gay Breyley who is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow and sessional lecturer in the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, as well as convenor of the Central and West Asia and Diasporas Research Network (CWADRN). More importantly, for the purposes of this exhibition, Gay is a leading expert on the music and cultural history of Iran and the Iranian diaspora, has conducted extensive fieldwork in Iran since 2003, and has published widely in this field, including an award-winning book co- authored with Iran's leading ethnomusicologist, Professor Sasan Fatemi. Gay has given invited guest lectures at various events, including at Berlin's Humboldt University, New York University, the University of Melbourne, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the State Library of Victoria, as well as a keynote address at the Interdisciplinary Conference on Art, Language and Technology in Mashhad, Iran.
