WINTER 2012-2013 On display at Brookgreen Carving Out Your Own Destiny— Gardens, SC A Provocative Idea, Copied One of our members who was vacationing in Florida last winter told me about an inter- esting museum in Winter park—the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens. The museum’s art collection focuses primarily on American representational sculpture and has over 200 works by Czech-born American sculptor Albin Polasek, N.A. The museum itself was his retirement home on scenic Lake Osceola. The Idea Remains The first sculpture you see upon entering the museum grounds isMan Carving His Own Destiny. It is Polasek’s iconic work, and he made several copies of it, including the one at Brookgreen Gardens (top left). And its concept has been copied many times and given various titles by various sculptors. But the idea remains the same. You can see a bronze adaptation of Destiny in front of Chipoltle’s on Excelsior Boulevard near the intersec- tion with Lake Street in Minneapolis. This version, called Self Made Man is by Bobbie Carlyle. It is much more realistic than Polasek’s, which was carved in a Art Deco style in 1908 when he was a student. Polasek’s Impressive Career Born in the Czech Republic, Albin Polasek apprenticed as a wood carver before immi- grating to the U.S. in 1901. He later attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and the American Academy of Art in Rome. During his influential artistic See this bronze at Excelsor and Lake and educational career, Polasek won many awards for his works and was commissioned in Minneapolis.

  • Havmannen - Et Estetisk Møte
Universitetet i Bergen Institutt for lingvistiske, litterære og estetiske studier KUN 350 Mastergradsoppgave i kunsthistorie Vårsemester 2013 Havmannen - et estetisk møte Annett Theim Brandanger 1 Havmannen - et estetisk møte 2 Abstract The politics of spectatorship and the aesthetic writings of the French-Algerian philosopher Jaques Rancière (1940) are the main focal points in this thesis. The aesthetic writings of Rancière have received increased attention in the last few years. A recurrent motif in his work is capturing the relation between politics and aesthetics, and their various meanings in different contexts. Rancière sees the aesthetic as a historically determined concept which designates a specific regime of visibility and intelligibility of art, which is inscribed in a reconfiguration of the categories of sensible experience and its interpretation. For him, the aesthetic as that which has been denied, when reconsidered on equal terms, is a potential site of emancipation. This leads into a discussion of what art does, and how it might have a political impact. Among others, political emancipation is to be seen in the literature of the “oppressed” – unrecognized voices in society. For Rancière, such works constitutes an event. This thesis examines such an event - around 100 poems spontaneously written by ordinary women and men. They were inspired by a work of art, the sculpture Havmannen1 (1995). Havmannen, made by the British sculptor Antony Gormley (1950), is situated in the town of Mo i Rana, Norway. Through the thinking of Rancière, the poems are linked to his understanding of event, equality and the aesthetic – Rancière’s own term on which political emancipation is to be fought for.

TEKST Finn Skårderud PUBLISERT 5. juli 2011 ABSTRACT: THE PHENOMENAL BODY Antony Gormley is one of our most challenging and successful contemporary artists. Since 1980 his sculptures have been based mainly on his own body. In his radical art he materializes his creative ideas about renewing artistic expressions, about outer and inner spaces, body and mind, and emotionally meeting oneself and others. Gormley’s art powerfully evokes strong emotions in the viewer, and stimulates relection and self-examination, as well as the examination of self in relation to others, also called mentalization. This essay, which is partly based on a dialogue with Antony Gormley in his studio, presents his intentions to move away from art as representation, storytelling, drama and mimesis, towards an art based on affective exchanges. The essay also uses Gormley’s art and ideas as a stepping-stone to intellectually challenging the classical Cartesian division of mind and body. There is a particular emphasis on the body philosophy of the French phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty (190761), who replaces Descartes’ famous «Cogito ergo sum» with the notion that identity and existence is based on bodily being in the world. Mind is embodied and body is minded. Keywords: body phenomenology, biography, em bodiment, mentalization, qualitative research, Antony Gormley HVILE: Bodies at Rest I (2000).
