This document includes detailed information from past interns about their experiences not just working within their specific Host organisation but also about the cities they have been placed in. If you are travelling away from home to undertake your internship, we strongly encourage you to read the following pages that directly relate to your internship location. If you are not travelling away from home, please have a look at the pages relevant to your home city. We rely on feedback from interns to keep our Hints and Tips up to date and appreciate your suggestions at the end of your internship. Aurora Internship COVID -19 Protocols You have recently been confirmed to undertake an Aurora internship in the summer 2020/21 round. As you can understand, Aurora is deeply committed to our public health responsibilities to reduce the risk of coronavirus transmission to you as an intern, to the staff at our Host organisations, and the communities in which you are all based. At Aurora we have adopted a vigilant approach that responds to a number of variables within our operating environment. Some of these factors are outlined below: - Some of our interns and Host organisations are based in COVID hotspots - ome of our interns and Host organisations are based in small communities where it can be harder to control outbreaks; and - some of our interns and Host organisations routinely work within communities with large numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and older with one or more chronic medical conditions, who are at higher risk. Taking into account these factors, Aurora asks that our interns to undertake a risk assessment for your internship and seek to mitigate this with consideration of the current COVID restrictions in your home state and that of your Host. Where risk cannot be appropriately mitigated, we will work with you to explore alternate arrangements to accommodate an internship. We would like you to complete the following steps: 1. One month prior to your commencement date*: 1.1 Check if your Host organisation’s State Government considers your location or recent movements to be in a ‘hotspot’. a. if so, please contact the Internships team ([email protected]) immediately as we will need to seek alternate arrangements – either: working from home with your current Host; postponing to a later date; arranging an alternate internship; or deferring to the winter 2021 round 5 b. if not, get in touch with your Host supervisor to check if they are still comfortable with the internship proceeding; and whether they are keen to host you onsite, or at home, or a combination of the two. 2. Contact the Internships team with an update on the outcome of your risk assessment. 2.1 The team will consider the above and advise on how to proceed and whether flight and accommodation bookings can go ahead. We will also advise you to book flexible flights at the time of booking. 3. Two weeks prior to your commencement date: 3.1 Please undertake a self-assessment covering the following: i. Do you currently have COVID-19? ii. Have you tested positive to COVID-19 in the past fortnight? iii. Have you encountered anyone in the past fortnight while they have been COVID-19 positive? iv. Do you have any COVID-19 and/or cold and/or flu symptoms? Thank you for your diligence and understanding as we continue to meet the needs of our Hosts and the aspirations of our interns, whilst maintaining our public health responsibilities. Working from home Due to COVID-19, several Hosts have requested that their interns be hosted from home. Please see below our Working from Home Pack for Interns – we trust that this resource will serve as a supplementary guide to support you in your home-based internship during COVID-19. 6 Working from Home Pack for Aurora Interns Congratulations on your internship as part of the Aurora Internship Program! We trust that this resource will serve as a supplementary guide to support you in your home-based internship during COVID-19. The information below is not intended to be overly prescriptive but rather includes suggestions of what is preferable (where possible). We are aware that some of this is not new to you, however some of our interns have found it helpful to have the information all in one place. Onboarding Safe and Effective Work Environment: Your Host may require you to complete our Working from home checklist, or it can be used as an easy reference. Insurance: Aurora provides travel and personal accident insurance for all Interns and Aurora hosts are responsible for providing professional indemnity and public liability cover for their interns. Cyber Security Please be really careful if you are using your own personal computer and information is lost (e.g. through computer malfunction, hacking or a virus), as such a loss may not be covered by your Host’s insurance or your home/contents insurance. Check with your Host either way. Also, limiting risks by implementing cyber security practices is essential. Please refer to the ACSC list of new guidelines outlining 9 important but simple cyber security practices for people who are working from home. Challenges Be aware of the factors that can make remote internships especially demanding, like: Lack of Lack of Social access to Distractions at home face-to-face 7 Working from Home Pack for Aurora Interns Communication Bearing in mind the challenges that home-based internships can present, we suggest the following: Review the workplan with your supervisor at the start of the internship to ensure that you have a clear idea of the scope of the work, including confidentiality, times frames and expectations. Be engaged during your daily check-ins with your supervisor which will likely be a one-on-one or a team call. They are a forum for open communication and corrective feedback, so be open, respectful and receptive. Establish the expectations for the frequency, means and ideal timing of communication with your supervisor and team, for example, video via Teams/Zoom for daily check-ns and IM for more urgent matters. If you are aware of the ‘rules of Be mindful of engagement’ you will find remote work becomes more efficient and satisfying. Take part in opportunities for remote professional/social interactions which will hopefully be arranged by your host, including zoom coffee/catch ups with your colleagues and attending weekly virtual office check-ins, so that you feel a part of the team. Aurora will also organise a time for you to meet other Aurora interns on home-based internships online each week. See you on Zoom soon! Don’t hesitate to ask for support from your supervisor if you require technical assistance navigating new digital platforms or are having trouble accessing information.

    NATIONAL CAPITAL AUTHORITY Submission to House of Representatives Standing Committee on Environment and Heritage Sustainable Cities 2025 1. INTRODUCTION The National Capital Authority has prepared this submission in response to the inquiry by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Environment and Heritage into issues and policies related to the development of sustainable cities to the year 2025. The Authority has been guided in its response by the Terms of Reference for the Inquiry provided by the Standing Committee: Terms of Reference • The environmental and social impacts of sprawling urban development; • The major determinants of urban settlement patterns and desirable patterns of development for the growth of Australian cities; • A ‘blueprint’ for ecologically sustainable patterns of settlement, with particular reference to eco-efficiency and equity in the provision of services and infrastructure; • Measures to reduce the environmental, social and economic costs of continuing urban expansion; and • Mechanisms for the Commonwealth to bring about urban development reform and promote ecologically sustainable patterns of settlement. The Authority’s submission provides the relevant background information on the Authority's role in planning and development in the ACT, and how the Authority both addresses and influences sustainability in its role to achieve ‘a National Capital which symbolises Australia’s heritage, values and aspirations, is internationally recognised, and which Australian’s are proud’. It sets out the provisions of the National Capital Plan applicable to sustainability and identifies initiatives undertaken by the Authority to create a more sustainable environment. 2. As the year 2009 is ending, the project ‘Childhood, Tradition and Change’ is entering its fourth, and final, year. This national study of the historical and contemporary practices and signifi- cance of Australian children’s playlore has been funded by the Australian Research Council together with Melbourne, Deakin and Curtin Universities and the National Library of Australia and Museum Victoria. In 2010 the research team will be carrying out its final fieldwork in primary school playgrounds, beginning the analysis of the rich body of data already obtained, and preparing the book which is the project’s final outcome. In fact many people have far more careful views about wind farms that include the conditions under which they believe they should be established and operated. Many individuals who support wind farms in principle nonetheless accept they should not be established in ways likely to harm neighbours. An example is provided by a petition submitted to the ACT Legislative Assembly on 16th September 2014 by Ms Nicole Lawder.
