    Regional Dynamics and Social Diversity – Portugal in the 21st Century Teresa Ferreira Rodrigues Introduction hrough its history Portugal always presented regional differences concerning population distribution, as well as fertility and mortality trends. Local T specificities related to life and death levels reflect diverse socioeconomic conditions and also different health coverage. We will try to diagnose the main concerns and future challenges related to those regional differences, using quantitative and qualitative data on demographic trends, well-being average levels and health services offer. We want to demonstrate that this kind of academic researches can be useful to policy makers, helping them: (1) to implement regional directed policies; (2) to reduce internal diversity; and (3) to improve quality of life in the most excluded areas. Our first issue consists in measuring the link between Portuguese modernization and asymmetries on social well-being levels1. Today Portugal faces some modera- tion on population growth rates, a total dependency on migration rates, both exter- nal and internal, as well as aged structures. But national average numbers are totally different from those at a regional level, mainly if using non demographic indicators, such as average living patterns or purchase power2. The paper begins with a short diagnosis on the huge demographic and socioeco- nomic changes of the last decades. In the second part we analyze the extent of the link between those changes and regional convergence on well-being levels. Finally, we try to determine the extent of regional contrasts, their main causes and the rela- tionship between social change and local average wealth standards, as well as the main problems and challenges that will be under discussion in the years to come, in what concerns to health policies.

Throughout the Wrecked! exhibit, you’ll see a series of vignettes called “Star Waters Wonders” which will ask questions that provoke our young guests to think more in-depth about science, history, math, and engineering. When Vasco da Gama opened up the sea route to India, colonial adventures in the Far East and eventually South America, provided the country with great wealth. However, from 1580 to 1640 Portugal came under Spanish rule, a very unhappy experience, still bitterly remembered by some.

    200 CIRA-ARQUEOLOGIA III – ATAS - CONGRESSO CONQUISTA E ROMANIZAÇÃO DO VALE DO TEJO Duas fortificações do final da Idade do Ferro/ início da romanização: São Salvador (Cadaval) e sítio do Castelo (Arruda dos Vinhos) GUILHERME CARDOSO ARQUEOLÓGO ASSEMBLEIA DISTRITAL DE LISBOA Resumo: O Castro de São Salvador localiza-se no município do Cadaval, Freguesia do Cercal, na par- te oriental da Serra de Montejunto, a partir do qual se domina um vasto território. Foi identificado nos anos 40 do século XX por Hipólito Cabaço. Os materiais re- sultantes das suas pesquisas, encontram-se guardados em Alenquer, no mu- seu que ostenta o seu nome. Entre 1989 e 1991, João Ludgero Gonçalves efectuou três sondagens que lhe permiti- ram perceber a técnica de construção da segunda linha de muralhas do castro e reco- lher vários materiais arqueológicos. Nos anos de 1996 e 1997, procedemos também a mais três sondagens arqueológi- cas, neste castro, onde foram identificados vestígios de estruturas num pequeno es- paço virado a sul, bem como um pequeno espólio arqueológico, que se encontra guardado no Museu Municipal do Cadaval. Mais a sul, já no concelho de Arruda dos Vinhos, entre 1988 e 1993, João Ludge- ro Gonçalves, procedeu a escavações arqueológicas no sítio do Castelo, localiza- do no extremo norte de um esporão bem próximo do Casal do Castelo, sobre o vale do rio Grande da Pipa. Sítio que já tinha sido identificado por Joaquim Gonçal- ves, quando prospectava estações arqueológicas com o fim de elaborar a Carta Ar- queológica do concelho de Sobral de Monte Agraço. Continuámos neste mesmo local escavações nos anos de 1996 e 1997, onde efec- tuámos três sondagens arqueológicas, que confirmaram os dados coligidos por João Ludgero Gonçalves anteriormente, ou seja, uma grande escassez de estru- turas, certamente devido à implantação do Forte do Paço, em 1809.
