5 Executive Director's Message Dear Friends, Each year, I typically begin these messages by saying something like “What an incredible year!” or “I’m feeling so excited…” But the truth is – 2020 was hard, and I’m actually feeling pretty tired. Personally, it was one of the more challenging years of my life. When the pandemic began, I was living with my wife and daughter in a two-bedroom apartment just outside NYC. Our childcare options disappeared, our tiny closet became the home office, our social life became non-existent, and I struggled with anxiety and depression about the loneliness I was feeling and the thought of catching COVID-19. We solved the space issue by moving into our first home, and our family helped out with childcare. Unfortunately, we also ended up catching COVID at the tail end of 2020. Fortunately, our symptoms were mild, and we’ve since recovered. Professionally, my team and I were faced with some pretty extraordinary choices and challenges. Would there be layoffs? Will the PPP run out before we can apply? Will our partners decide that funding our organization isn’t a priority this year due to their own financial struggles? Will our network feel less engaged without all the fun conferences, food drives, truck pulls, and events? Fortunately, the answer to all of those questions was “No.” So perhaps I start this again. 2020 was a year of resilience. It was a year of challenges, innovation, technology, and relationships. It was a year of protest and division as millions came together to reaffirm the fact that #BlackLivesMatter. It was a year of sorrow as we’ve now lost more than 2 million people, globally, to this vicious disease while nearly 100M+ others, including myself, will live with the uncertainty of future health effects. And it was certainly a year of hunger – now with more than 50 million Americans and 1 in 8 Canadians struggling with food insecurity. And while 2020 felt like an eternity, it’s now over. Now we can reflect and recognize the many bright spots that shined through the darkness. Despite its challenges, Move For Hunger had its most impactful year to date. We delivered more than 5 million pounds of food to food banks across the US & Canada in a single year – which is 25% of the overall total we’ve delivered over the past 11 years combined. We piloted new, socially distant food drives, and added freight and logistics companies to our network. We began working with farmers, gleaning organizations, food manufactures, and distributors and literally recovered truckloads of food. We found virtual ways to engage our partners and their employees while still remaining true to our mission to stop food waste and fight hunger. Move For Hunger accomplished all of this with the most amazing team I could ever ask for along with our incredible board, action committees, partners, interns, and volunteers who literally make it happen each and every day. The logistics of getting food to where it is most needed isn’t easy, and I am beyond grateful to those who are working together with us to ensure that millions of people won’t go to bed hungry. On a personal note, I got to spend the whole year with my wife and two-year-old. No conferences. No travel. Just working together to help our daughter grow. No better silver lining if you ask me. It’s now a new year. Stay tuned for new programs, new content, new milestones, and new ways for YOU to get involved. Thanks for continuing on this journey with us. We are more committed than ever to help fight hunger and food waste and provide meals for those in need.

Thank you,

Adam Lowy Founder & Executive Director

6 State of hunger - COVID-19 During these difficult and uncertain times, there is no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on those who struggle with food insecurity. Throughout the pandemic, Move For Hunger has remained committed to our mission to find ways to rescue food. We have been doing whatever we can to provide assistance to food banks throughout the US and Canada to meet the extreme demand they face.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating economic impact and has drastically increased the need for emergency food assistance nationwide. More than 37 million Americans were food insecure before the pandemic with estimates saying that number has increased by 17 million in 2020. Communities that were already struggling will be hit the hardest.

With each passing day, the number of people who find themselves in need of food assistance grows significantly. 72% of the households served by affiliated food banks live at or below 100% ofthe federal poverty line. These households simply don’t have enough money to consistently put food on the table. Americans are working harder than ever, but are still struggling to make ends meet. The pandemic exacerbates the issues that food-insecure households already face.

Move For Hunger will continue to deliver truckloads of food to our nation's food banks while increasing education on the issues of hunger and food waste. We will continue to provide meals to families, children, seniors, and vulnerable communities who are struggling as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to our donors and members' help, we can rapidly respond to the growing hunger crisis our country is facing.

Premium Q Moving & Storage delivered pallets of food to local GoGo SqueeZ refueled frontline workers by donating over 300,000 Boston food pantry, Project Soup, at the start of the pandemic. lbs of food across 10 states to nearly 400 individual organizations and leveraged over 20 of our transportation partners to do it.

7 Hunger & Racial Equity People of any color, ethnicity, or demographic background can experience food insecurity. Some groups, however, are more vulnerable than others. African American households face hunger African American at 2x the rate of white, non-Hispanic households. Households face hunger at Why are minorities predominantly the populations that are affected by hunger? The higher rates of food insecurity & poverty 2x the rate and the racial wealth gap are a direct result of systemic racial of white, non-hispanic and gender discrimination in virtually every aspect of American households. life. Although slavery was abolished more than 150 years ago, the legacy of oppression has lived on through policies that have trapped millions of Black Americans in poverty for generations.

It should be obvious that food insecurity is a racial equity issue. A cycle of deprivation prevents minority families from achieving economic success, as presented by low wages and wealth gaps. It is important for this issue to be acknowledged so we can address the root causes of the problem.

Fixing this problem is not going to be easy. It will require an extraordinary commitment to remedy these historic injustices. Move For Hunger will black continue to support our food banks and pantries lives because millions of Americans need help today. But we matter need to start thinking bigger, we need to ask ourselves difficult questions, and confront the systemic racism that permeates our society if we ever hope to end hunger once and for all.

8 sustainability & food waste According to ReFED, a non-profit dedicated to reducing food waste in the , 40% of the food produced in the US ends up in landfills. How much is 40%? This equates to 63 million tons of food - which is an insane amount and is significatnly higher than the gloabl average. All this waste has a financial impact as well. Financially, this costs the US more than $218 billion dollars annually. How does that affect me, you might ask? Well, the average American wastes 219 pounds of food annually, and the typical family of four throws away $1,600 worth of produce each year. That's a nice chunk of change most Americans would love to have back in their wallets. But the costs aren't just financial; all of this food ends up in landfills. In fact, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, food is the single largest component taking up space inside US landfills - making up 22% of municipal solid waste. 10 billion tons 53 billion tons ends discarded or left up in landfills + unharvested on farms

Typical family of four throws away $1,600 of food produced in the US worth of produce each year. 63 Million tons ends up in landfills each year.

There are many reasons why food is wasted: over-purchasing, overproducing, labor and logistics issues, undesirable ugly fruits In the United States & veggies, discarding leftovers, not composting, or straight-up 40% of food confusion by date labeling. Have you ever looked at those things? "Best By," "Sell By," "Use By," "Expires By," etc... What does it produced all mean?! While date labels can help provide (some) guidance, ends up in landfills. they aren't going to tell you the exact date that your food will spoil. A new standardized system is definitely needed to help reduce this confusion.

Food is being wasted at Every level of the supply chain

However, there are solutions, and Move For Hunger is proud to be one that is unique. It's going to take collaborative efforts between the stakeholders of our food system, policymakers, and individuals like you changing behaviors to actually begin to reduce food waste. We're up for the challenge! Are you?

9 response to hunger Move For Hunger has begun exploring ways to help deliver fresh farm produce to those who need it most. This will be a critical new program because it will help prevent even more food from going to waste. One of our members, Don Queeney of Hampton Roads Moving and Storage, recently entered the world of fresh produce. He and his family have built and maintained a garden full of fresh vegetables. They have harvested over 2,000 pounds of food and also deliver weekly loads of product to supermarkets. During the COVID-19 pandemic, freight and bulk food rescue have become an integral part of our operations. Bulk food rescue provides large amounts of food to food banks across the country. Transportation and logistics continue to be a huge challenge for food banks, and that’s where Move For Hunger and our members have really stepped up during the pandemic. We have also formed strong relationships with transport carriers that aren’t traditional moving companies but are still able to use their trucks to assist. This year we worked with major corporations, like Kraft Heinz and Sodexo, to transport pallets of food. Due to the generosity of these companies, over 341,000 pounds of food, enough for 284,000 meals, have been provided across America.
