New Downhole Electronics Survive High

Field tests are planned in 1981 of geothermal well logging tools equippe~ with the first commercially available electronic microcircuits that operate at 275°C. The high- electronics, under development at Sandia for the past four years, are now available from Teledyne Philbrick, Dedham, Mass. They are an outgrowth of technology developed here to produce radiation-resistant micro• circuits for nuclear weapons. Temperatures in geothermal boreholes typically reach 27 5 °C, greatly limiting the usefulness of conventional oil and gas logging tools, whose electronics do not operate reliably at temperatures above 180°C. "High-temperature circuits have been urgently needed so that borehole logging instruments can be used to assess high• temperature reservoirs," says Tony Ven• eruso, supervisor of Geothermal Tech• nology Division 47 42. " Reliable logging identifies reservoir rock and fluid properties and, thus, the ultimate production potential of geo• thermal reservoirs, planning well com• pletions and production, and preventing thermal and chemical pollution of ground• water." The new electronics employ hybrid thick-film circuits made by printing special resistor, conductor, and dielectric inks onto alumina substrates. After the inks are baked onto the substrates, semiconductors are added and the circuits are hermetically packaged. [ Contz.nued on Page Two]

Technical Accomplishments 1980 has a two-fold objective: to document in one place, unclassified, the principal technical accomplishments of the Labs for the year just past; secondly, to inform Sandians of-what the other Sandi an is doing. It has a number of potential applications. In another aspect of this project, a newly installed 400 watt pulsed laser welding system has been used to show feasibility for completing hermetic closure welds in hardware associated with the project.
