The objectives of the project were: (1) to research microcomputer systems that could be made accessible to youth with blindness through print, voice, and touch;(2) to develop and evaluate instructional programs for teaching youth with visual impairments to use microcomputer systems through multimedia access;(3) to develop and evaluate instructional packages for these multimedia microcomputer systems for the inservice and preservice training of special education and other personnel who work with youth with visual impairments;(4) to evaluate selected, adapted, or specially development computer-assisted instructional programs for curricula, prevocational, and avocational purposes; and (5)to disseminate the results and products of the research project through usual dissemination channels. The report identifies the advantages and limitations of cassette Braille devices, OPTACON (Optical-to-Tactile Converter), speech synthesis, digitized speech, and large print. -

This is also called as Text-to- Speech synthesis or in short TTS. Communication plays an important role in everyones life. Usually communication refers to speaking or writing or sending a message to another person. Speech is one of the most important ways for human communication. There have been a great number of efforts to incorporate speech for communication between humans and computers. Demand for technologies in speech processing, such as speech recogni- tion, dialogue processing, natural language processing, and speech synthesis are increas- ing. These technologies are useful for human-to-human like spoken language translation systems and human-to-machine communication like control for handicapped persons etc., TTS is one of the key technologies in speech processing. TTS system converts ordinary orthographic text into acoustic signal, which is indis- tinguishable from human speech. For developing a natural human machine interface, the TTS system can be used as a way to communicate back, like a human voice by a computer. The TTS can be a voice for those people who cannot speak. People wishing to learn a new language can use the TTS system to learn the pronunciation. -

This pa- per reviews the research on vocal correlates in the expression of affect and examines the ability of currently available major text-to-speech (TTS) systems to synthesize expressive speech for an emotional robot guide. Speech features discussed include pitch, duration, loudness, spectral structure, and voice quality. TTS systems are examined as to their ability to control the fea- tures needed for synthesizing expressive speech: pitch, duration, loudness, and voice quality. The OpenMARY system is recommended since it provides the highest amount of control over speech production as well as the ability to work with a sophisticated intonation model. Open- MARY is being actively developed, is supported on our current Linux platform, and provides timing information for talking heads such as our current robot face. 1. Rosenhouse Swantech - Sound Wave Analysis & Technologies Ltd, Haifa, Israel Abstract Biomimesis of sound production, synthesis and recognition follows millenias of years of adaptation as it developed in nature. Technically such communication means were initiated since people began to build speaking machines based on natural speech concepts. The first devices were mechanical and they were in use till the end of the 19th century. Those developments later led to modern speech and music synthesis, initially applying pure mechanics. Since the beginning of the 20th century electronics has taken up the lead to independent electronic achievements in human communication abilities. As shown in the present paper, this development was intentionally made along history in order to satisfy human needs. Keywords: speaking machines, biomimetics, speech synthesis. 1 Introduction Automation is an old attempt of people to tame machines for the needs of human beings. It began mainly, as far as we know, since 70 DC (with Heron). In linguistics, the history of speaking machines began in the 2nd century when people tried to build speaking heads. However, actually, the process was initiated in the 18th century, with Wolfgang von Kempelen who invented a speaking mechanism that simulated the speech system of human beings. Borbach studied Musicology, Media, and History at the Humboldt University of Berlin. His bachelor’s thesis dealt with radio theories between ideology and media epistemology. For his master’s thesis, he studied the media-technical implementations of echoes. His research interests include media theory of the voice, media archaeology of the echo, operationalization of the sonic, time-critical detection technologies and their visualiza- tion strategies, and the occult of media/media of the occult.
