A A U S during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, Archimandrite B Sebastian Dabovich has the distinction of being the first person born in the United States of America to be ordained as an Orthodox priest, 1 and also the first native-born American to be tonsured as an Orthodox monk. His greatest distinction, however, lies in the tremen- dous apostolic, pastoral, and literary work that he accomplished dur- ing the forty-eight years of his priestly ministry. Despite differences in language, music, styles of iconography and so on, the Church professes one faith, celebrates the same liturgies and prays the same prayers. Nowhere is this unity more appar- ent than in the Orthodox faithful who bring Orthodoxy to their new homelands. There are many saints who link the Russian Orthodox Churches in Russia and America, beginning with St. Herman of Alaska in the 18 th and 19 th centuries, and continuing through St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco in the 20 th century. The opening of this chapter is linked to the name of the Russian Orthodox shepherd who became one of the first to give his soul for his flock during this twentieth century of fighters against God: Archpriest John Kochurov. Father John Kochurov was born on July 13, 1871, in the village of Bigildino-Surky of the district of Danky in the Ryazan region, to a pious family of many children.

Internal Auditor Report John Skrobat C. 2017 Preliminary Budget 1 Chancellor’s Report to the Metropolitan Council September 20, 2016 The Metropolitan Council September 19-22, 2016 Chancellor’s Report “To prominently position the OCA within the broader cultural context” Over the last couple of years His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon, with the concurrence of the Holy Synod, has been putting forward the vision of an OCA built on four pillars, like the pillars of the altar: spiritual life, stewardship, evangelism/outreach and external relations. Helping to shape this vision into concrete forms is one of the main tasks of the Metropolitan Council, together with the Holy Synod and the OCA’s officers and administration. His Beatitude’s and the OCA officers’ shared hope is that at this meeting of the Metropolitan Council we could begin to plan more systematically. As a starting point we can go back to His Beatitude’s report to the Spring MC meeting this year. For each of the pillars he spoke about “enduring goals” (more on this later.) For example, under “Evangelism and Outreach” he listed the following as enduring goals: • To plant, grow and revive current and future parish and mission communities within our dioceses; • To prominently position the OCA within the broader cultural context in addressing: o Contemporary moral and ethical issues (family and human sexuality; bio-medical; and philanthropy) o Improve communications both internally and externally • To effectively practice Mt.

    HIEROMARTYR ALEXANDER HOTOVITSKY (1872-1937) Feast Day: December 4th The future saint and martyr for his Faith was born in 1872 in the city of Kremenetz in the Volhynia area of western Ukraine, the son of a priest, who was the Dean of the Volhynia Seminary. After graduating from seminary, he continued his studies at the St. Petersburg Academy, from which he graduated in 1895. He was then sent as a missionary to America and assigned as Reader at the St. Nicholas Church in New York City. Soon he married and was ordained to the priesthood in 1896 by Bishop Nicholas, and was assigned as the pastor of St. Nicholas Church/Cathedral, where he served for eighteen years. Father Alexander worked in close collaboration with Bishop Tikhon when he was Bishop of North America from 1898 until 1907. The future Patriarch, Tikhon, admired his young priest’s sincere piety, pastoral love and deep theological erudition. St. Alexander’s labors for Orthodoxy in America are multi-faceted. He labored hard, with much success, to bring back to their Orthodox heritage many of the Uniates who had been immigrating to America from Galicia and Carpatho-Rus’. He St. Alexander Hotovitsky, east wall of vestry, established many new parishes—in Yonkers, Passaic and Philadelphia—and St. Innocent Orthodox Church, Redford, MI throughout North America. He was the editor of the influential educational periodical, the American Orthodox Messenger, published in English and Russian. He was actively involved with the running of the Mutual Aid Society, which provided vital help to Orthodox immigrants. Fr.
