Cathedral Holy Trinity An Update from Frs. Alexander and Daniel By your holy prayers, we are in good health! The sisters here at the monas- tery are keeping us well fed (too well fed, really). This summer has flown by Holy Trinity all too quickly since we had to make over four trips to Kiev to deal with up- dating Fr. Alexander’s US passport, and working on getting our Russian visas. The main reason for visiting Russia was to attend our friend Misha Cathedral Mikhalochkin’s wedding in Moscow. A A U S during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, Archimandrite B Sebastian Dabovich has the distinction of being the first person born in the United States of America to be ordained as an Orthodox priest, 1 and also the first native-born American to be tonsured as an Orthodox monk. His greatest distinction, however, lies in the tremen- dous apostolic, pastoral, and literary work that he accomplished dur- ing the forty-eight years of his priestly ministry. Known as the “Father of Serbian Orthodoxy in America,” 2 he was responsible for the found- ing of the first Serbian churches in the New World. Despite differences in language, music, styles of iconography and so on, the Church professes one faith, celebrates the same liturgies and prays the same prayers. Nowhere is this unity more appar- ent than in the Orthodox faithful who bring Orthodoxy to their new homelands. The church celebrates the memory of one of these saints, St. John Kochurov, on October 31 st . St. John was born on July 13, 1871 and graduated from the Ryazan Seminary and St. Petersburg Theological Acad- emy. After graduation, marriage, and ordination to the priesthood, St. John came to the United States as a missionary. He was the first priest assigned to St. Vladimir’s Church in Chicago, which later became Holy Trinity Cathedral (completed and consecrated in 1902.) The opening of this chapter is linked to the name of the Russian Orthodox shepherd who became one of the first to give his soul for his flock during this twentieth century of fighters against God: Archpriest John Kochurov. Father John Kochurov was born on July 13, 1871, in the village of Bigildino-Surky of the district of Danky in the Ryazan region, to a pious family of many children.

Helping to shape this vision into concrete forms is one of the main tasks of the Metropolitan Council, together with the Holy Synod and the OCA’s officers and administration. His Beatitude’s and the OCA officers’ shared hope is that at this meeting of the Metropolitan Council we could begin to plan more systematically. As a starting point we can go back to His Beatitude’s report to the Spring MC meeting this year. For each of the pillars he spoke about “enduring goals” (more on this later.)     HIEROMARTYR ALEXANDER HOTOVITSKY (1872-1937) Feast Day: December 4th The future saint and martyr for his Faith was born in 1872 in the city of Kremenetz in the Volhynia area of western Ukraine, the son of a priest, who was the Dean of the Volhynia Seminary. After graduating from seminary, he continued his studies at the St. Petersburg Academy, from which he graduated in 1895. He was then sent as a missionary to America and assigned as Reader at the St. Nicholas Church in New York City. Soon he married and was ordained to the priesthood in 1896 by Bishop Nicholas, and was assigned as the pastor of St. Nicholas Church/Cathedral, where he served for eighteen years. Father Alexander worked in close collaboration with Bishop Tikhon when he was Bishop of North America from 1898 until 1907. The future Patriarch, Tikhon, admired his young priest’s sincere piety, pastoral love and deep theological erudition. St. Alexander’s labors for Orthodoxy in America are multi-faceted. He labored hard, with much success, to bring back to their Orthodox heritage many of the Uniates who had been immigrating to America from Galicia and Carpatho-Rus’. He St. Alexander Hotovitsky, east wall of vestry, established many new parishes—in Yonkers, Passaic and Philadelphia—and St. Innocent Orthodox Church, Redford, MI throughout North America. He was the editor of the influential educational periodical, the American Orthodox Messenger, published in English and Russian. He was actively involved with the running of the Mutual Aid Society, which provided vital help to Orthodox immigrants. Fr.
