Alberti From the mid-1960s a new breed of scientific instrument curators emerged in the United Kingdom. This small community of practice developed in parallel to but distinctly from the expanding generation of university historians of science and other cognate museum sub-professions. Presenting the trajectories, experiences and practices of personnel in British scientific instrument collections, especially the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh, this article explores how networks of interest around collections shaped the museum sector in later twentieth-century Britain. With particular objects – especially eighteenth-century instruments – the ‘brass brigade’ built a discipline. Therefore, I have given you a sufficient astrolabe made for our horizon at the latitude of Oxford, and a little treatise by which I plan to teach you a certain number of conclusions appertaining to the same instrument.] Chaucer subtitled his treatise “Bred and mylk for childeren,” but we should not thereby think that it was a common thing in 1391 for a boy to head out of the house with an astrolabe, any more than Chaucer’s career could be deemed common.2 Setting aside the precocious Lowys, we might well ask whether mature users of the astrolabe would have found the instrument useful for travel, and if so, what evidence exists for their taking them on the road or on the seas.

Its first champion was Robert T. Gunther, the son of a keeper of zoology at the British Museum and a graduate of Magdalen College who took a first there in the School of Natural Science in 1892, specializing in zoology (figure 1). As tutor in natural science at Magdalen (and subsequently a fellow) from 1894 until his retirement in 1920, at the age of 50, Gunther showed himself to be a fighter, both for the cause of science in the university and for the preservation of Oxford’s scientific heritage. His first work, A history of the Daubeny Laboratory (1904), reflected his devotion to the memory of the laboratory’s founder and Magdalen’s greatest man of science, Charles Daubeny, who had held chairs of chemistry, botany and rural economy at various times, for long periods simultaneously, between 1822 and his death in 1867.1 Supplements, bearing the main title The Daubeny Laboratory register, followed in 1916 and 1924,2 but it was Gunther’s Early science in Oxford, published in 14 substantial volumes between 1920 and 1945, that signalled his definitive move from science to history.3 World War I brought home to Gunther the vulnerability of Oxford’s scientific collections, in particular the many early instruments that survived, largely disregarded, in the colleges.

    Through a glass, darkly Issue 13 – February 2007 This copperplate engraving is the Workshop of Lens Grinders (circa 1780) by the Italian artist Francesco Pedro (1740-1806). It shows a perhaps somewhat stylised view of a lens-making workshop. Left and centre craftsmen examine a telescope and microscope. No other science is as dependent on a single instrument as astronomy on the telescope, and telescopes could not have developed without an established tradition of lens manufacture. Several of the articles in this issue cover aspects of the history of astronomical instrumentation. There is a report of last year’s Autumn Conference, which had the theme Historical Instruments and Imaging. John Armitage gives a second progress report on the recreation of a typical Victorian observatory at Pendrell Hall in Staffordshire and Leonard Honey describes the history of the sextant. This paper explores the hoarding, collecting and occasional display of old apparatus in new laboratories. The first section uses a 1936 exhibition of Cambridge’s scientific relics as a jumping-off point to survey the range of historical practices in the various Cambridge labora- tories. This panoramic approach is intended to show the variety and complexity of pasts that scientists had used material to conjure in the years prior to the exhibition. Commerce and com- memoration emerge as two key themes. The second part turns to the Cavendish Laboratory (experimental physics) to explore the highly specific senses of time and memorialization at play in the early years of the laboratory (c.1874–1910), and the way these were transformed over the subsequent generations leading up to the 1936 moment. The key figure here is James Clerk Maxwell, whose turn to history involved a mix of antiquarianism and modernism. The paper concludes with an attempt to characterize the meanings and significances of ‘the museum in the lab’. This phenomenon ought to be understood in terms of the wide range of ‘collections’ present in laboratory spaces.
