The article exam- ines how political reality impacted the processes of shaping scholarly and educational images, i.e. constructing a “convenient” usable past by the Bulgarian academic and non-academic cir- cles. The main aspect in the study is related to the question of various interpretations of the ethnic origin of the Bulgars, the Huns and the role of the Slavic factor in the ethnogenesis of the contemporary Bulgarians. The milestones of the difficult history of Bulgaria and changes in political regimes have become the reasons for rejecting “Slavic” origin or, in some case, returning to it depending on external and internal circumstances. Today the Hun theory in all its variations and interpretations lies outside the professional scope of academic circles but is becoming the domain for various marginals. However, increasing activity of the right and the far-right in the politics of Europe capitalizing on the 2015 refugee crisis might return to the mainstream of official academic discourse the theory of the Hun The upcoming challenges of foreign policy (Euro-skepticism, ambitious projects outside the EU framework) and internal political issues (the question of national minorities) may also have a significant impact on this issue.

  • Petition to Unesco Against the Appropriation of Bulgarian Language, History and Culture by Republic of Macedonia
1 PETITION TO UNESCO AGAINST THE APPROPRIATION OF BULGARIAN LANGUAGE, HISTORY AND CULTURE BY REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA Dear Mrs Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO We, the undersigned bulgarians from Bulgaria, Republic of Macedonia and other parts of the world, also people with different ethnic backgrounds are appealing to you with the request... the appropriation of Bulgarian language, history, culture and their desecration to be stopped. We insist the Bulgarian language in Republic of Macedonia not to be proclaimed for "Macedonian"! We turn to you as the highest authority responsible for the protection of culture and cultural heritage in the world, where language takes an important place as the spiritual heritage of a nation. Therefore we are asking you to take a stand in resolving the injustice which the bulgarian nation has endured for 65 years now. We stipulate for the protection and preservation of Bulgarian language, historical and cultural identity as part of the world's cultural heritage as a whole. In support of this are the numerous international documents such as Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the UN (Article 27), the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of UN (Article 13 and 15), and the Universal Declaration of Cultural Diversity of UNESCO since 2001. According to these documents everyone has the right to express, create and disclose his own works in his native language. These rights are an inseparable part of all human rights which are universal and indivisible. We are supplementing our requirements and expectations towards UNESCO with solid and concrete facts and examples showing the systematic abuse and encroachment of Bulgarian language, history and culture which are of paramount importance to the cultural and historical identity of the bulgarian nation.

That’s just why we have wars, I say, because everyone agreed to belong to their own blood group. Djordjevski Master of Arts in History San Diego State University, 2012 This work examines how force has been used in the process of nation-building in the Balkans from the Balkan Wars to the end of World War II, particularly among the Slavs of Macedonia and the Serbs of Croatia. By looking at the development of nationalism from its conception in the 18th and 19th centuries to its “apogee” in the first half of the 20th century, this thesis also explores Balkan events and ideas of nationality and nationhood in the region while putting them into a broader European context.

    I. “HISTORY WIHIN AND BEYOND PAISII HILENDRSKI’S SLAVONIC BULGARIAN HISTORY” 6 Dear Colleagues, The Department of History of Literature and Comparative Literary Studies, and the Department of Bulgarian Literature and Literary Theory have the pleasure of inviting you to the anniversary international research conference which aims at problematizing the theme “HISTORY WITHIN AND BEYOND PAISII HILENDARSKI’S SLAVONIC BULGARIAN HISTORY.” PREAMBLE The year is 1762. The place of the event – The Zograf Monastery on the Holy Mount Athos. It was there and then that hieromonk Paisius of Hilendar completed the manuscript of Slavonic Bulgarian History (“Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya”), and further the journey was “uneven.” The journey of a Revival History, marked by the trials and tribulations of the “high” Beginning. If we take a closer look at the “histories” of the Revival-period routes of History, as “compiled” and “rendered” by father Paisius, we shall perceive that there is not another Revival-period manuscript book, which should have been dealt the lot of cherishing a “long” memory of the original in around 70 copies, of which but 45 seem to have reached us. If we take a closer look… We shall learn that there is not another Revival-period manuscript book which should have been granted the unique talent that Slavonic Bulgarian History possessed: to “unlock”, further and further, new “histories,” whose events have been marked in the marginal notes. If we take a closer look, we shall have to not only recognize that there was not another Revival-period manuscript book, which was universally familiar in its “then-and-there,” but we shall also have to narrate: Of those “humble plowmen, diggers, shepherds and humble artisans,” who “listened,” “from mouth to ear,” to the History from Slavonic Bulgarian History.

  • The Post-Classical Use of Latin in Bulgaria DOI
Elia Marinova* The Post-Classical Use of Latin in Bulgaria DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12775/LC.2019.047 Abstract: The article summarizes the evidence about the use of Latin in Bulgaria during the Middle Ages and the early modern period and comments the reasons for the lack of knowledge or the indifference to the literary tradition of the Latin West till the end of the nineteenth century. Beginning with the transformation of the Roman world in the Late Antiquity, the post-classical fate of Latinitas in the Bulgarian lands tells us for the most part a story about cut threads, periods of forced isolation from the Latin West (the spread of humanism and the access to the great achievements of the following cultural epochs in Europe were blocked by the Turkish invasion in 1396), and reconsidered confessional and political choices. My intention, however, is to present the few separate channels of transmitting Latin language and literary culture to the educated élite in Bulgaria, i.e. the diplomatic contacts with the Papacy and the European rulers, the direct or indirect translations from Latin sources, and the original works written in Latin by the Bulgarian Catholics in the seventeenth century. In these times, and later, indirect translations dominated, it was only in 1873 that the first 63 major direct translation of a Latin text into Bulgarian appeared. Keywords: Greek and Latin in the East Balkans, Latin in medieval Bulgaria, Latin works of the Bulgarian Catholics 4(32) 2019 Poklasyczna obecność łaciny w Bułgarii Streszczenie: Artykuł prezentuje świadectwa na temat obecności łaciny w Bułgarii w wiekach śred- nich i we wczesnej nowożytności oraz omawia przyczyny braku wiedzy lub zainteresowania literacką tradycją łacińskiego Zachodu aż do końca XIX wieku.
