Foley, who had recently resigned: e have the honor and pleasure to inform you that today His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI appointed the Most Reverend Edwin Frederick O’Brien to the W charge of Pro-Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. On behalf of all we wish to express to the new Pro-Grand Master our warmest congratulations: we are confident that thanks to his experience, wisdom and prudence, he will lead our organization to reach even higher goals. In the meantime and starting from now, we place ourselves and the whole Order at the entire disposal of the Most Reverend Edwin Frederick O’Brien for the implementation of his directives. Therefore We must raise Our voice in loud protestations against the impious war which tries to take such a precious treasure away from you, beloved children. Already taught by long and sorrowful experience, you know well the terrible trials of this war, you who deplore it in your hearts as Catholics and as Italians. Can one be Italian in name and sentiment and not resent these continual offenses against divine beliefs? These beliefs are the most beautiful of our glories, for they gave to Italy its primacy over the other nations and to Rome the spiritual sceptre of the world. They likewise made the wonderful edifice of Christian civilization rise over the ruins of paganism and barbarism. Can we be Catholic in mind and heart and gaze with dry eyes on that land where our wondrous Redeemer deigned to establish the seat of His kingdom? Now We see His teachings attacked and His reverence outraged, His Church embattled and His Vicar opposed. So many souls redeemed by His blood are now lost, the choicest portion of His flock, a people faithful to Him for nineteen centuries. How can We bear to look upon His chosen people exposed to a constant and ever- present danger of apostasy, pushed toward error and vice, material miseries, and moral degradation? Rev. Daniel E. Garcia appointed auxiliary bishop AUSTIN – Today we received great news from Holy Father Pope Francis: he has appointed Vicar General Daniel E. Garcia as auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Austin. This is the first time in the 67-year history of the Diocese of Austin that an auxiliary bishop has been appointed to serve in the diocese. An auxiliary bishop assists the bishop in carrying out his duties and responsibilities as the chief shepherd of the diocese. Bishop Joe S. Vásquez will hold a press conference at 10 a.m. today at the diocesan Pastoral Center in Austin. Bishop Vásquez appointed then-Father Danny Garcia as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia on March 3, 2014. (The Curia is the collective body of persons and offices assisting the diocesan bishop in governing the diocese.) Bishop-elect Garcia was ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Austin on May 28, 1988, by Bishop John E. McCarthy. He was born on Aug. 30, 1960 as the eldest of four children of Daniel Castilleja Garcia, Jr. and the late Sarah Muñoz Garcia. He grew up in Cameron. He is bilingual in Spanish and English. He earned an associate of arts degree from Tyler Junior College in 1982. He earned a bachelor of arts in Philosophy from St. Mary’s Seminary at the University of St. Thomas in Houston in 1984 and earned a master’s of Divinity from the same university in 1988. Part 1 – Church Becomes Powerful Institution Evidence of Rome’s power grab • In 2nd century we see bishops over regions; people looked to them for guidance. • Around 195AD there was dispute over which day to celebrate Passover (14th Nissan vs. Sunday) • Polycarp said 14th Nissan, but now Victor (Bishop of Rome) liked Sunday. • A council was convened to decide, and they decided on Sunday. • But bishops of Asia continued the Passover on 14th Nissan. • Eusebius wrote what happened next: “Thereupon Victor, who presided over the church at Rome, immediately attempted to cut off from the common unity the parishes of all Asia, with the churches that agreed with them, as heterodox [heretics]; and he wrote letters and declared all the brethren there wholly excommunicate.” (Eus., Hist. eccl. 5.24.9) Everyone started looking to Rome to settle disputes • Rome was always ending up on the winning side in their handling of controversial topics. 1 • So through a combination of the fact that Rome was the most important city in the ancient world and its bishop was always right doctrinally then everyone started looking to Rome. • So Rome took that power and developed it into the Roman Catholic Church by the 600s. Church granted power to rule • Constantine gave the pope power to rule over Italy, Jerusalem, Constantinople and Alexandria. -

Preface to the 2016 Revision To the Clergy, Religion and Laity of the Catholic Apostolic Church in North America Greetings: Nine years have passed since the last revision of the Constitution and Canons of CACINA. In 2007, relying on God’s guidance, we made many changes in our organization and in the way we function. The bishops moved away from the authoritarian power structure that had proven so problematic for other jurisdictions over the centuries, turning away from the traditional role of “governing, judging, and ruling.” Since 2007 the bishops have functioned as spiritual guides and chief pastors to the people, as well as protectors of the faith and doctrines of the Church, and arbiters of clergy conduct and discipline. Since 2007, the House of Delegates, made up of laity, deacons, and priests, now joins the bishops in governance of the church. Meeting annually at the General Assembly, the College of Bishops and the House of Delegates continue to guide and direct the Church and plan for its future. In particular, the members of laity of the Church are directly involved in the selection and preparation of candidates for ordination and are responsible for the management of Church funds. Finally, CACINA views the Canons as a living and dynamic document that guides us in our daily management of the affairs of the Church. Accordingly, the language of the Canons has been softened and, in some instances, its provisions have been made advisory or discretionary rather than mandatory. Revisions made to the Canons at this time were to separate operating procedures from the Canons with exception of Canon 10 which has been added to better define CACINA lay ministries. -

177 The Diocese of Minsk, its Origin, Extent and Hierarchy BY Č. SIPOVIČ I Those who would wish to study the history of Christianity in Byelorussia should certainly pursue the history of the Orthodox and Catholic churches, and to a lesser extent, that of various groups of Protestants. One must bear in mind that the Catholic Church in Byelorussia followed and still follows two Rites: the Latin and the Oriental-Byzantine. It is acceptable to call the latter by the name Uniate. In Byelorussia it dates back to the Synod of Brest-Litoŭsk in the year 1596. But here we propose to deal exclusively with the Catholic Church of the Latin Rite, and will further limit ourselves to a small section of its history, namely the foundation of the diocese of Minsk. Something also will be said of its bishops and admin istrators. Exactly how and when the Latin form of Catholicism came to Byelorussia is a question which has not been sufficiently elucidated. Here then are the basic historical facts. From the beginning of the acceptance of Christianity in Byelo russia until the end of the 14th century, the population followed the Eastern Rite and until the end of the 12th century it formed part of the universal Christian Church. After the erection of a Latin bishopric in Vilna in 1387, and after the acceptance of Christianity in the Latin Rite by the Lithuanians, this episcopal see itself and its clergy started to propagate this rite. It is well-known that Jahajła had virtually the same relations with the pagan Lithuanians as with Orthodox Ukrainians and Byelo russians. -

Biography of pope john paul ii pdf Continue John Paul II (1920-2005) CAROL JASEF VODYA, elected Pope on October 16, 1978, was born on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland. He was the third of three children born to Karol Oytytya and Emilia Kakovsky, who died in 1929. His older brother Edmund, a doctor, died in 1932, and his father, Carol, a non-commissioned officer in the army, died in 1941. He was nine years old when he received his First Communion and eighteen years when he received the Sacrament of Confirmation. After graduating from high school in Vadowice, he enrolled at the University of Jagelon in Krakow in 1938. When the Nazi occupying forces closed the university in 1939, Karol worked (1940-1944) in a quarry and then at the Solvea chemical plant to earn a living and avoid deportation to Germany. Feeling called to the priesthood, he began his studies in 1942 at a secret large seminary in Krakow under the direction of Archbishop Adam Stefan Sapiehi. At the time, he was one of the organizers of the Rhapsodic Theatre, which was also underground. After the war, Carol continued his studies at the main seminary, recently reopened, and at the School of Theology at Jagelon University, before his priestly ordination in Krakow on November 1, 1946. Father Oytysha was then sent by Cardinal Sapieha to Rome, where he received his doctorate in theology (1948). He wrote his thesis on faith, as is understood in the works of St. John the Cross. As a student in Rome, he spent his holidays performing pastoral service with Polish expats in France, Belgium and Holland.
