Fishing with Harry Bennett

Harry Bennett slid his john boat off the ancient trailer into the waters of the Satilla River at Burnt Fork, some 60 miles south of Jesup. He was excited to show me the river here and to fish with me, sure that we would have some good fishing. Fifty ways to save money

Back in February, we cele- brated “America Saves Week” by taking the pledge to save money, to reduce debt, to build wealth over time, and to encourage our family and friends to do the same. Since then, we’ve had the opportu- nity to learn a variety of ways to save. This week, we’ll look at sav- ing in the areas of By Becky clothing, Collins communica- tions, enter- Extension Agent tainment, and family and friends. If you have not had the chance to take the pledge, it’s not too late. Just go to gafamilies.org/money. And, if you’re interested, you can opt to receive text messages, up to four per month, to keep you motivated with informa- tion, advice, tips and re- minders to help you reach your savings goal.

Clothing 37. Look for sales at dis- count outlets. There are huge price differences between clothing on sale at discount stores and that sold regularly at many department and spe- cialty stores. Keep in mind that prices at department and specialty stores are often deeply discounted, so shop the sale and clearance racks. 38. Consider purchasing clothes from Goodwill, sec- ondhand stores, or school or church thrift sales. With a little effort, you can find low- priced, high-quality used clothing items that can be worn for many years. 39. Assess clothing in terms of quality as well as price. An inexpensive shirt or coat is not a bargain if it wears out in less than a year. Consider fabric, stitching, washability and other quality-related fac- tors in your selection of clothes. 40. Clean clothes inexpen- sively. Wash and iron clothes yourself. If you use a cleaner, compare prices at different establishments. A 50-cent dif- ference in cleaning a shirt, for example, can add up to K COLLINS, 2B See Page Morality is just as important as education in our society
