2 Message from the Board Chair and President Dear Friends,

How does someone know when they are a true friend of Acadia?

By simple measure, merely belonging to this organization certainly qualifies one to claim that title. Each of us, whether through membership donations, volunteering, or helping to spread the word about how to help protect Acadia, regularly expands our role as a park steward in a myriad of ways.

For many, the reasons for becoming a friend of Acadia transcend the obvious. Motivations rise from personal stories, family traditions, and a wellspring of affection for, and an innate spiritual connection with, one of the most beautiful and inspiring places on Earth. In the end, that is the fundamental point of commonality among us, and the source from which Friends of Acadia draws its strength.

Translating that collective strength into meaningful impact in our park is what Friends of Acadia is all about. On behalf of our entire staff and Board of Directors, we are pleased to report that over the past year, programs and funds arrayed under FOA’s core strategic pillars of the Acadia Experience, Tomorrow’s Stewards, Trails and Carriage Roads, and Wild Acadia made 2018 one of the most productive times in FOA’s history. We hope that the following pages will affirm how much of a difference you make through your willingness to give back to this place that provides so much to all of us.

Being a good Friend of Acadia, however, doesn’t just demand a devotion to protect and preserve the park; it also necessitates that we constantly strive to nurture those inspiring individual connections as well.

So along with your continued support of FOA on multiple levels make sure you take some time to savor the salt spray at ocean’s edge, embrace the peace of the forest, hike the trails, ride the carriage roads and paddle the lakes and streams.

Your reinvigorated strength and inspiration are elemental to continuing FOA’s vital mission long into the future.

Tomorrow’s Stewards

While so much attention is focused on Acadia National Park’s ongoing challenges, including traffic congestion and budgetary issues, if history teaches one lesson it is that even greater, unforeseen trials likely lie ahead. Along with strengthening the funding mechanisms to sustain ongoing efforts and plan for future needs, it remains vital that we help nurture succeeding generations of people to prioritize preserving and protecting the park. Friends of Acadia’s Tomorrow’s Stewards programs are designed to do just that. Throughout 2018 education and experiential programs continued to grow.

Acadia’s overnight residential education program for middle school students, the Schoodic Education Adventure (SEA) is operated in partnership with Acadia National Park and the Schoodic Institute with partial funding from FOA and L.L.Bean. It served 588 students and nearly 100 adults from 21 public and private schools, the majority of them in Maine.

“The SEA program is an integral part of providing a hands-on experiential ecosystems unit,” says 6th grade teacher Ruth Wilson of the Otisfield Community School. “It helps keep the focus on marine science, which we then connect to our local watershed in the spring. The majority of my students have never even been to the ocean and this trip was a life changing experience.” FOA’s Yellow Bus Fund provided transportation assistance grants for six schools, including five from Maine, for field trips to Acadia.

Outdoor classrooms continued to receive support from FOA including a $2,500 grant to Piscataquis Community School in Guilford for the second year of their outdoor classroom and trail project.

A total of seven Acadia Teacher Fellows spent the season assisting with outdoor classroom work, helping with Junior Ranger programs, doing citizen science and research, and developing outdoor curricula.

Tomorrow’s Stewards also funded the continuation of the Acadia Youth Technology Team (since renamed the Acadia Digital Media Team). in Acadia’s outreach efforts as well.

Celebrating its 10th year in 2018, FOA’s Acadia Quest program boasted a total of 45 teams with 187 participants who hailed from Facing page: Park Ranger Kate Petrie 17 different states and two other countries. Direct FOA support for Tomorrow’s Stewards grants and programs in 2018 totaled $313,974.

Acadia Experience

Although the term means something different to every individual, protecting and improving the Acadia Experience remains front and center at every level of management in the park and at Friends of Acadia.

During 2018, park officials rolled out their draft plan for managing transportation and congestion including future peak season access reservations and parking changes. Friends of Acadia was instrumental in helping educate the public on the options and the preferred alternative that was ultimately selected and finalized in 2019. FOA issued press releases, op-eds by FOA President and CEO David MacDonald, and announcements on social media and in print publications including the FOA Journal and an E-News extra. A special Facebook page established to host and guide online discussion on the plan quickly became the “go-to” forum where people could interact with policymakers in a civil and reasoned way. FOA also helped organize a series of community conversations with neighbors at area libraries and streamed those sessions live online. More than 80,000 people viewed those videos.

In 2018 FOA’s Summit Stewards, the seasonal team that interacts with visitors on Cadillac Mountain and in the backcountry, had direct interactions with 28,096 visitors answering questions and stressing Leave No Trace principles. Ridership on the Island Explorer, the fare-free, propane-powered bus system serving Acadia National Park and the surrounding communities, set a new record in 2018. A total of 624, 076 trips were logged by the end of the season on October 8. In all, there were 42,771 more passengers than in 2017, representing a 7 percent increase. The system is funded through park entrance fees, state and federal transportation funding, grants from L.L.Bean and FOA, municipal contributions and donations from businesses and passengers.

During 2018, Friends of Acadia spent $690,399 in direct support of Acadia Experience initiatives.

Trails and Carriage Roads

In the waning years of the 19th century, long before there even was an Acadia National Park, creating a network of walking trails to allow leisurely “tramps” up the hills and along the shores of Mount Desert Island was a top priority for both year-round and seasonal residents. Village Improvement Societies laid out the paths, secured landowner permission, hired construction crews, and even published maps to share the island’s spectacular scenery with all. Continuing that tradition, today’s trail stewards, including park crews bolstered by financial support from Friends of Acadia, the youthful energy and exuberance of FOA’s Acadia Youth Conservation Corps (AYCC), volunteer crew leaders, and recruits from every walk of life, strive to insure that people of this day and those in the future will enjoy myriad options for spending time outdoors. “I really love the natural places of the world such as Acadia. I’ve been coming here all my life,” explains Coby Richardson, 18, an AYCC crew member for the past two years. “It has been an amazing opportunity to be out in the park and to do such important work,” During 2018, projects included rehabilitation of trails on Beech, Gorham, and Bubbles paths along with work on the Kane Path, Seaside Path, Jordan Pond Path, Canon Brook Trail, and major reconstruction of the Valley Cove Trail. Despite heavy rain, more than 300 people turned out for Take Pride in Acadia Day in November to help put Acadia’s carriage roads to bed for the winter, clearing leaves from nine miles of ditches in the park. Participants included families and young people from scout groups, the University of Maine, and Husson University. Funding was also provided in 2018 to allow an intern working at the Olmstead Center for Landscape Preservation to research detailed documentation of historic trail and carriage road vistas. In all, FOA provided $917,706 in support for Acadia’s trails and carriage roads and related volunteer programs in 2018.

Wild Acadia

Preserving Acadia National Park’s ecological integrity and protecting it from a variety of threats requires a multi-disciplinary approach involving data collection, scientific analysis, and forthright action. Survey and study of key watersheds within the park progressed in 2018 with continued stream monitoring at seven sites, monitoring of water levels in the Great Meadow, and, for the sixth year in a row, enhanced seasonal monitoring of water quality in Jordan Pond. Following several destructive cycles of flooding and freezing that inundated and caused damage to Sieur de Monts Nature Center, the Great Meadow, the Wild Gardens of Acadia, and nearby trails in spring of 2018, Wild Acadia Coordinator Brian Henkel put together a far-reaching public presentation explaining the unusual hydrological and meteorological circumstances that contributed to the problem. Park officials are now exploring potential changes to the stream passage under the Park Loop Road in that area to forestall future calamities. “We are looking forward to having continued conversations with the greater community,” Henkel says. Also at Sieur de Monts, contractors funded by FOA completed early groundwork for the restoration of a forested wetland landscape in an area where a failing septic system had been removed. 9 Program Highlights DIVERSITY IN ACADIA In the second year of FOA’s program to bring a more diverse youth population to Acadia engaged teens from the Studio 345 Journeys Program based in Charlotte, North Carolina traveled to Maine to experience the woods, mountains, shores and culture of the park. FOA grant money helped defray travel costs and the purchase of necessary clothing and equipment.

One of the group’s leaders shared some of the group’s experiences. “Acadia National Park opened up a new world for all participants as we witnessed the first sunrise on the East Coast, learned about the amazing science beyond the stars, and ate fresh sea kelp discovered in tidepools,” she said.

“We walked on water to Little Moose Island, hiked the challenging Dorr Mountain Trail, swam in the ocean (a first for several youth), and so much more.

“Experiencing each of these memories taught us that national parks are indeed a gift to us all…. We have passed the beauty and lessons of Acadia National Park on to our families and community through our visual, literary, and performing arts.”

WINTER TRAILS The winter of 2018 was very unpredictable, but volunteers made the most of what snow did come our way. The grooming began even before Christmas of 2017, and volunteers logged well over 200 hours. The Kubota unit received a new Ginzugroomer and was deployed whenever the snowpack exceeded six inches.

Several of the old Skidoo snowmobiles were retired due to age and maintenance costs, so the program began purchasing replacement sleds much better suited to the workload such as an Artic Bearcat snowmobile specifically designed for grooming cross-country ski trails. It was put to work in the Eagle Lake area.

Left: Friends of Acadia Conservation Projects Manager Paige Steele left, and Acadia National Park Roads Foreman Alan Farnsworth pose with the new Ginzugroomer that FOA purchased in January of 2018 to help maintain the park’s cross-country ski trails. 1100 Program Highlights WILD GARDENS OF ACADIA The dedicated volunteers of the Wild Gardens of Acadia faced significant challenges early in 2018 due to severe flooding followed by flash freezes that left more than 100 trees and shrubs crushed or girdled by thick ice. Ice floes also caused significant damage to the entrance gate near the Nature Center, as well as to the deer fencing. Many plants remained encased in ice in April. But by June, committee, staff and volunteers managed to bring things back to near normal. Most shrubs rebounded after clipping away the damaged stems. Ground covers and plants such as lady slippers came back nicely but volunteers will continue to monitor longer term effects. In 2018, a total of 39 volunteers, donated a combined 1,345 hours to restore, revitalize and refresh the gardens.

STRATEGIC PLAN In May of 2018, after nearly a year of work by special board subcommittees and staff with the assistance of Starboard Leadership, Friends of Acadia finalized a new strategic plan outlining desired outcomes and performance indicators for a variety of priorities including The Acadia Experience, Wild Acadia, Tomorrow’s Stewards, Trails and Carriage Roads, and new focuses on Advocacy and Communications.

Projects and goals include: park transportation plan implementation, increased advocacy, creation of a college volunteer program, increased educational opportunity for youth, expanded outreach and development opportunities, and improvement of the quality and breadth of online information about how to be a resource-sensitive visitor.
