We have not, as a rule, included those who were merely patrons of workers, or those known only as contributing small details to a local Flora. Where known, the name is followed by the years of birth and death, which, when uncertain, are marked with a ? or c. [circa) ; or merely approximate dates of "flourishing" are given. The paper shows the results of floristic investigations of 12 islands and several skerries of the inner part of SW Finnish archipelago, situated within a square of 11.56 km2. The research comprised all vascular plants – growing spontaneously and cultivated, and the results were compared to the present flora of a square 10 × 10 km from the Atlas of Vascular Plants of Finland, in which the studied area is nested. The total flora counted 611 species, among them, 535 growing spontaneously or escapees from cultivation, and 76 exclusively in cultivation. The results showed that the flora of Seili and adjacent islands was almost as rich in species as that recorded in the square 10 × 10 km. This study contributed 74 new species to this square. The hitherto published analyses from this area did not focus on origin (geographic-historical groups), socioecological groups, life forms and on the degree of threat of recorded species. Spontaneous flora of the studied area constituted about 44% of the whole flora of Regio aboënsis. -

Read Full License Page 1/13 Abstract The rising global population size has placed increasing demands for acquisition and sustainable use of renewable resources and carbon sink. One of the ways to meet this demand and realise Green deal is by planting fast growing trees such as Alnus incana, Betula pendula, Salix sp., Populus tremuloides x Populus tremula for short rotation forestry (SRF) or short rotation coppice (SRC). The area of these plantations is increasing. The main benet of these plantations is renewable wood energy. There can be also additional benets for ecosystem services if the plantation is fully used. The aim of the study was to describe the ecosystem services offered by SRC and SRF in comparison to intensive agriculture. We studied the occurrence of herbaceous plant species in an experimental tree stand in Skriveri district in Latvia. The cover of plants was estimated in plots. The results showed a multitude of other ecosystem services offered by the plantation. In grassland belts between tree rows, provisioning ecosystem services included plants for medicinal purposes and teas, as well as forage species for livestock feed. -

To examine claims that the role of botanical art in systematic botany is diminishing because of advances in photography, this review considers relevant literature and includes a quantitative analysis of trends in modern journals, monographs and floras. Our focus is on southern hemisphere systematic botany because, relative to the northern hemisphere, this is poorly represented in modern reviews of botanical art and photography. An analysis of all digitally available papers in Nuytsia, the Journal of the Adelaide Botanic Garden, Muelleria, Telopea, Austrobaileya and Systematic Botany established that, although photographic illustrations have increased since 2000, botanical illustrations have not always diminished. The cause of these trends is unknown, but it is likely to be due to several factors, including sourcing funding for production of botanical illustration, editorial preference for the use of illustrations or photographs, author preference for either illustrations or photographs, and moving to online publication, with no charges for colour reproduction. Moreover, the inclusion of botanical artists as co-authors in some scientific publications signals an ongoing and important role. Botanical illustration brings sharp focus and meticulous attention to detail regarding form and structure of plants. -

Issue 2 NFG Winter Newsletter 2016-17 Norfolk Flora Group – Winter Newsletter 2016-17 Welcome to the NFG Winter Newsletter Amazingly, and despite the state of dormancy which many of us enter into at this time of year, a number of you read the inaugural edition; and some of you even seemed to enjoy it (or at least were too polite to say otherwise). Anyway; we were sufficiently encouraged that we decided to produce Issue No. 2. In this issue … we find out about Robin’s very large vegetable. There have been rumours, but we now have photographic evidence. Our esteemed Dr Leaney tells us about all the things we secretly wanted to know (but have always been too shy to ask) about glands; Richard discusses problems with Poa; the eagerly awaited results of ‘Norfolk Flora Group Pub of The Year’ are finally made public; Mike C goes fishing; and much, much more. We again take a quick look back at some of the more interesting moments from the 2016 botanising season, and prevue some of the events planned for the 2017 season. Contributors to this edition are Suki Pryce, Janet Higgins, Bob Leaney, Mike Crewe, Robin Stevenson and myself, together with our glorious ‘leaders’, Richard Carter and Bob Ellis; and our mysterious crossword compiler. SIBBALDIA: 171 The Journal of Botanic Garden Horticulture, No. 10 LIVING COLLECTION OF FLORA GRAECA SIBTHORPIANA: FROM THE FOLIOS OF THE MONUMENTAL EDITION TO THE BEDS OF A BOTANIC GARDEN IN GREECE Sophia Rhizopoulou1, Alexander Lykos2, Pinelopi Delipetrou3 & Irene Vallianatou4 ABstrAct The results of a survey of vascular plants illustrated in the 19th-century publication Flora Graeca Sibthorpiana (FGS) and grown in Diomedes Botanic Garden (DBG) in Athens metropolitan area in Greece reveal a total number of 274 taxa belonging to 67 families, using the Raunkiaer system of categorising plants by life form (Raunkiaer, 1934). Therophytes dominate with 36 per cent, while hemicryptophytes, chamephytes and geophytes follow with 16 per cent, 14 per cent and 14 per cent respectively. In terms of life cycle, 60 per cent are perennials, 36 per cent annuals and 4 per cent other growth forms adapted to environmental disturbance. Although anthropo- genic pressures and environmental stresses have caused loss of habitat and resulted in profound landscape transformation in the eastern Mediterranean, DBG contributes to the maintenance of approximately one-third of the plants collected in territories of the Levant in 1787. This living collection constitutes an important testimony to the scientific value, heritage and plant diversity described in FGS. Statistics are provided comparing the plants collected and illustrated for FGS and those now growing in DBG. IntroDuctIon Flora Graeca Sibthorpiana (Sibthorp and Smith, 1806–1840) is considered by many to be the most splendid and expensive flora ever produced and was printed in ten folio volumes between 1806 and 1840 (Stearn, 1967; Lack & Mabberley, 1999; Harris, 2007). -

Flora Graeca is a work in ten folio volumes, published in London between 1806 and 1840. It is based on the botanical collections made by John Sibthorp during his travels in what is now Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Turkey and the pictorial documentation of the plants produced by Ferdinand Bauer. The text was written by James Edward Smith, Robert Brown and John Lindley. Flora Graeca was printed in a tiny edition with the result that many botanists considered it to be non-existent or as only a manuscript. This paper deals with the few copies of Flora Graeca kept today in libraries on the European continent and their historical backgrounds – three in Paris, one in Vienna and Darmstadt respectively, all apparently subscription copies, while the copies in St. Petersburg and Copenhagen were previously owned by Fredrick North, 5th Earl of Guildford, and John Platt. The botanical affiliations of the previous owners, among them Franz I, Emperor of Austria, and Ludwig I, Grand Duke of Hesse, are explained. The libraries on the European continent that have copies of the so-called Bohn reissue of Flora Graeca are listed. Particular attention is given to the Belgrade copy, a hybrid consisting of printed title matter with some of the landscapes copied by hand and the 966 engravings, whereas all text pages, indices and appendices have been written on a type writer.
