OSWEGO HIGH SCHOOL WIND ENSEMBLE

The Oswego High School Music Department offers three bands, two orchestras, three choirs, jazz band, marching band, small ensembles, an annual musical show, lessons, theory classes, master classes and recitals for 500 of the building's 1650 students.

The Oswego High School Band program involves more than 210 students in grades 9-12, divided into three bands: An 80-member Concert Band, a 75- member Symphonic Band and a select 55-member Wind Ensemble. Each ensemble meets daily, with small group instruction provided on a rotating basis one day each week. Students in the Wind Ensemble form the wind section for our Symphonic Orchestra.

The Oswego High School Bands enjoy a long, rich musical history. From the 1995 premiere of Stephen Melillo's The Fountainhead to performances with such noted musicians as Karel Husa, James Croft, Tim Lautzenhiszer, Francis McBeth, Rodney Winther, Charles Peltz, and Eugene Corporon, the bands continue their long tradition of excellence.

Oswego, New York a city of just over 19,000 is located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Oswego River. The abundant water resources account for the long history and much of the current economic activity. Incorporated as a city in 1848, Oswego was a bustling port throughout the 19th century. It was a ship-building center and used the area as background for his novel Patlfmder.

Tourism has become an important industry in Oswego. Fort Ontario attracts thousands of tourists each year. A monument on the grounds commemorates the Fort's use during World War II and a safe haven for Jews. The nationally known Oswego Speedway attracts thousands of fans every summer to its grandstands. Oswego's waters hook thousands to fish. The State University of New York at Oswego bring 8,500 students to campus to study courses from art to zoology. W. T. WOODSON HIGH SCHOOL SYMPHONIC BAND

W. T. Woodson High School is located in the heart of historic Fairfax County, Virginia and twenty minutes from our nation's monuments and governing bodies in Washington, D.C. Fairfax County, which is the tenth largest school division in the , includes 23 high schools, 23 intermediate schools, 128 elementary schools and a student population of over 133,000. The student body of W. T. Woodson number 1300 students who are enrolled in wide variety of course offerings, including over 400 students who are enrolled in music classes. The instrumental program includes two string orchestras, two performing concert bands, a marching band, a jazz ensemble, a clarinet choir, a brass band, and a color guard program.

The W. T. Woodson bands offer one of the state's finest high school band programs. Of the 66 students in the Symphonic band, approximately 58 study privately with members of the National Symphony Orchestra, United States Marine and Air Force Bands or local freelance musicians. The program was selected as one of two high school bands from the United States, Canada and Japan to receive the "Sudler Flag of Honor" by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. The "Sudler Flag" is the highest recognition awarded to high school bands.

The W. T. Woodson band was selected to be the featured band at the 1995 University of South Carolina's Concert Band Symposium, at the 1994 VMEA state convention and also at the Southern Division of the College Band Director's National Association biennial convention. The Symphonic Band was also one of sixteen high school bands selected to perform in the 1992 and 1995 National Concert Band Festival in Chicago. In 1988, the band was featured at the national MENC Convention, one of only four high school bands so honored.

Other achievements of the Woodson band program include: Superior ratings in Grade VI music in the Virginia District Band festivals for the past 13 years, selection as a Virginia Honor Band for the eight years it has been eligible, superior rating in every state marching band festival attended over the past 13 years, four featured performances at Washington Redskins games; and over 100 awards and trophies earned in the past 13 years in contests and festivals throughout the eastern and mid-western United States and Canada. ITHACA COLLEGE WIND AND PERCUSSION PROGRAM

The Ithaca College School of Music wind and percussion program has had a long and prestigious history beginning with Patrick Conway, who founded the Conway Band School in 1922. Since then the reputation and impact of the wind and percussion program on bands and band music has been impressive. Such famed conductors as Walter Beeler, Colonel George S. Howard, founder of the Army Air Force Band, Colonel Arnald Gabriel, retired conductor of the Air Force Band; and performers too numerous to list, have graduated from Ithaca College, taking with them the finest band traditions.

At present the core of the program is represented by three main groups: The Wind Ensemble, conducted by Rodney Winther, the Symphonic Band, conducted by Henry Neubert, and the Concert Band, conducted by Mark Fonder. Many other opportunities to supplement a student's perspective on wind and percussion literature are available: Percussion Ensemble, Brass Choir, Choir, Hom Choir, the Saxophone Quartet program, Tuba Ensemble, as well as individual repertoire classes held weekly in each studio. Of course, options also exist for orchestral playing in the Ithaca College Orchestra and exposure to the jazz idiom in the two jazz workshops and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble. To finalize a student's experience, all varieties of small ensembles, combining performers from across the school, are sponsored through the school's chamber music program. The Ithaca College School of Music has one of the largest undergraduate music programs of any private, non-doctoral degree granting institution in the United States. Long known for its emphasis on music performance coupled with a practical approach to music education, many leading professional performers and music educators are counted among Ithaca College School of Music alumni.

Most undergraduates at Ithaca College enroll in the Bachelor of Music program, majoring in performance, music education, composition, jazz studies, or music theory. One of the most useful and popular programs combines music education and performance. This nine semester course of study prepares the student for a career in music education while also fulfilling all requirements for the degree in music performance. The Bachelor of Music in Combination with an Outside Field provides the student with the opportunity for strong musical training while also providing sufficient time for an emphasis or extensive minor outside of music. Some of the more popular fields include business and audio production. Students desiring a large amount of liberal arts may choose a music major in the Bachelor of Arts degree. A degree program in Musical Theater, offered jointly by the Department of Theater and the School of Music, serves those students interested in both theater and music. The Ithaca College School of Music also offers master's degrees in music performance, music education, composition, conducting, music theory, and Suzuki pedagogy in strings or piano.

Throughout their course of study, music students perform in major ensembles chosen from the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Choir, Chorus and Women's Chorale. In addition, many participate in the Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Workshop, Percussion Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Madrigal Singers, Brass Choir and Opera and Musical Theater Workshop. Regardless of the students' degree program, Ithaca College values the importance of performance.
