Paul E. Bierley Papers Paul E Paul E. Bierley Papers Paul E. Bierley Papers Record Series #12/9/94 Paul E. Bierley Papers, 1892−2002 Record Series 12/9/94 (95 cubic feet, 128 boxes) By Lois Walker, Adriana Cuervo, and Scott Schwartz Biography Sousa biographer, Paul E. Bierley, has devoted his life to the study of John Philip Sousa and the world famous Sousa Band. Bierley`s John Philip Sousa, American Phenomenon and The Works of John Philip Sousa (a catalog of Sousa`s original works, arrangements, and transcriptions)have received international recognition as the standard reference resources for information about the life and works of the "March King." Other Sousa−related works by Mr. Bierley include Hallelujah Trombone (a biography of Henry Fillmore), The Music of Henry Fillmore and Henry Huff, Nineteenth Century American Musical Theater, Later Operetta, Part 1 (El Capitan), and the revised edition of Sousa`s Marching Along. Bierley served as editor for the two volume set of William Rehrig`s 1991 The Heritage Encyclopedia Band Music (Volume 3, Supplement, 1996), has published many Sousa−related journal articles about the Sousa Band, and has provided liner notes for numerous LPs and CDs. Mr. Bierley was featured in the 1993 PBS documentary, If You Knew Sousa.... He is an honorary member of the American Bandmasters Association, the John Philip Sousa Foundation, the Robert Hoe Foundation, and the Society for American Music and holds memberships in many other organizations. Music has always been a serous avocation for Mr. Bierley, an aeronautical engineer by profession. Active as a performing musician, Bierley has served as a tubist for the Columbus, Ohio Symphony Orchestra, the Brass Band of Columbus, and with the World Symphony Orchestra (under the direction of Arthur Fiedler), and the New Sousa Band (conducted by Keith Brion as John Philip Sousa). He also served as the assistant conductor of the North American Rockwell Concert Band. Scope and Content Correspondence, subject files, newsclippings, oral histories, account ledgers, programs, audiotape and videotape recordings, dissertations and theses, books, awards, engineering diagrams, cartoon sketch books, and press books documenting Bierley`s career as an areospace engineer, leading scholar on John Philip Sousa and Henry Filmore, and managing editor of Integrity Press. Provenance The papers were donated to the University of Illinois at Urbana−Champaign by Paul E. and Pauline J. Bierley on April 8, 2004. WOLF TRAP HOLIDAY SING-A-LONG FROM HOME ABOUT THE ARTISTS “THE PRESIDENT’S OWN” UNITED STATES MARINE BAND Established by an Act of Congress in 1798, the United States Marine Band is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. Its mission is unique—to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. President John Adams invited the Marine Band to make its White House debut on New Year’s Day, 1801, in the then-unfinished Executive Mansion. In March of that year, the band performed for Thomas Jefferson’s inauguration and it is believed that it has performed for every presidential inaugural since. In Jefferson, the band found its most visionary advocate. An accomplished musician himself, Jefferson recognized the unique relationship between the band and the Chief Executive and he is credited with giving the Marine Band its title, “The President’s Own.” COLONEL JASON K. FETTIG, director Colonel Jason K. Fettig is the 28th director of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. He joined in 1997 as a clarinetist and assumed leadership of the Marine Band in July of 2014. He was promoted to his present rank in August 2017 by President Donald J. Trump, becoming the third director of “The President’s Own” to be promoted to colonel in a White House ceremony. As director, Col. Fettig is the music adviser to the White House and regularly conducts the Marine Band and Marine Chamber Orchestra at the Executive Mansion and at all Presidential Inaugurations. He also serves as music director of Washington, D.C.’s historic Gridiron Club, a position held by every Marine Band Director since John Philip Sousa.

Homer Rodeheaver: Reverend Trombone Douglas Yeo Historic Brass Society Journal (peer-reviewed) Volume 27, 2015 The Historic Brass Society Journal (ISSN1045-4616) is published annually by the Historic Brass Society, Inc. 148 W. 23rd Street, #5F New York, NY 10011 USA YEO 1 Homer Rodeheaver: Reverend Trombone Douglas Yeo Introduction Since his death in 1955, Homer Rodeheaver (1880–1955) has slipped into obscurity, an astonishing fact given that he played the trombone for as many as 100 million people in his lifetime. While not nearly so accomplished as the great trombone soloists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries such as Arthur Pryor, Simone Mantia, and Leo Zimmerman, Rodeheaver’s use of the trombone in Christian evangelistic meetings—par- ticularly during the years (1910–30) when he was song leader for William Ashley “Billy” Sunday—had an impact on American religious and secular culture that continues today. Rodeheaver’s tree of influence includes many other trombone-playing evangelists and song leaders, including Clifford Barrows, song leader for the evangelistic crusades1 of William Franklin “Billy” Graham. While Homer Rodeheaver was one of the most successful publishers of Christian songbooks and hymnals of the modern era—he owned copyrights to many of the most popular gospel2 songs of the first half of the twentieth century—and was the owner of and a recording artist with one of the first record companies devoted primarily to Christian music, the focus of this article is on Rodeheaver as trombonist and trombone icon, his use of the trombone as a tool in leading large congregations in singing, the particular instruments he used, his trombone recordings, and his legacy and influence in inspiring and encouraging others to utilize the trombone as a tool for large-scale Christian evangelism.

Fourth Grade 2018-2019 Blue and Gold List If the Walls Could Talk by Jane O’Connor In case you've ever wondered, the walls at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue have eyes and ears -- and, what's more, they don't miss a thing. Now, listen up because the walls have a thing or two to tell you! During President John Tyler's presidency, the White House was such a mess that it was called the "Public Shabby House." President William Howard Taft was so large that he had to have a jumbo-size bathtub installed -- one big enough for four people. President Andrew Jackson's "open door" policy at the White House resulted in 20,000 people showing up for his inauguration party. (The new president escaped to the quiet of a nearby hotel!) Hear these funny, surprising stories and more about the most famous home in America and the extraordinary families who have lived in it. Our Texas by Jackie Mims Hopkins From King Ranch to the Alamo on through the capital city of Austin, explore historical sites, learn about the people who helped Texas develop, and discover the natural beauty of this dynamic state. This book takes readers on a tour of the cities and wilderness of this larger-than-life state. John Philip Duck by Patricia Polacco Edward loves his pet duck more than anything. He raised it from a baby, and now it follows him everywhere, even to the big fancy hotel in Memphis where he works with his father. Everyone at the Peabody loves to watch that little duck do tricks; why, it can even waddle up and down in time to a John Philip Sousa march, which is why Edward decides to name it John Philip.
