Last year we launched our ‘MBA Way’ which everyone has embraced and which is now starting to show some amazing results. In conjunction with our High Performance Learning and commitment to Global Goals, they are now all embedded in our school life and providing the focus for our learning. “Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another.” Alfred Adler This week in our Crew Meetings we have been looking at the way in which we celebrate our students excelling in their work or behaviour. They also gave their views on how they could be rewarded with a system to replace the Vivo system we have used in the past. After half term we will be introducing the MBA passport, a new way to record our excellent work and celebrate the success that this can bring. Students will be able to receive credits from staff and tutors that can be converted to points and exchanged in the school shop for prizes. My colleagues have also been working hard planning for our forthcoming Project Week and I am pleased to GLOBAL CHAMPION say that up to 30 students will be working with Miss Wheeler to reinstate our poly tunnel into the new community GrowSpace. In keeping with our policy to re-use and recycle as much as we can, we have appealed to the local community for any surplus compost, pots and tools which we will be using to grow food for a number of local groups including the Street Food Project Penzance.

Application on Behalf of Cornwall Council and Caradon Observatory for Bodmin Moor to Be Considered As an International Dark Sky Landscape
1 Executive Summary Bodmin Moor is a special place. Amongst the many environmental designations ranging from the international to the local, Bodmin Moor forms part of an Area of Outstanding Beauty. This means it benefits from the same planning status and protection as English National Parks. Visitors are already drawn to the dramatic panoramas, varied wildlife and intriguing history, with those already in the know also appreciating and learning about the stars in the exceptionally dark night sky. Caradon Observatory readings taken in and around Bodmin Moor quantify the remarkable quality of the sky’s darkness and correspond with the findings of the Campaign to Protect Rural England Night Blight study. The results show that even around the villages there are impressive views of the night sky. There is considerable support from the public and stakeholder organisations for the establishment of Bodmin Moor as an International Dark Sky Landscape with “Park” status. Feedback from residents, businesses, landowners, farmers, astronomers, educators, environmental bodies and other statutory and charitable organisations has helped shape the proposals. Enthusiasm is such that there have already been calls to widen the buffer zone if the designation is successful. The alternative title for the designation stems from local feedback and reflects the AONB status. Bodmin Moor comprises a varied moorland landscape with a few small villages and hamlets so there is very little artificial light. Nevertheless, steps have been taken and are continuing to be made to reduce light pollution, particularly from streets. This means that the vast majority of lighting is sensitive to the dark night sky and is becoming even more sympathetic.

Registered Charity No. 105565 NEWSLETTER 135 June 2014 Registered Charity No. 1055654 CAS AGM 2014 – PRESIDENT’S REPORT by Prof Valerie Maxfield. This report, despite being termed ‘The President’s Report’, is in reality a report on the work of the whole committee and it aims to include a representative look at our work in an active year when much has been achieved. Last year I started with the report of a happy event, the award of the RAI Anniversary Prize, in the form of a glass plaque which has been displayed in the Royal Cornwall Museum. On a sad note, we lost one of our most well-known members, in the person of Mick Aston, of ‘Time Team’ Fame. Mick was a respected academic archaeologist, tutor in Adult Education and professor of Archaeology at Bristol University. But he wore his scholarship lightly; he had a light touch which allowed him, and his trademark stripy jumpers, to attract a very considerable popular following. Following his retirement, Mick was moving down to Cornwall and we were looking forward to his increasing participation in the archaeology of the County. But he died suddenly in June last year. CAS has been named as a beneficiary in his will – no details as yet. Your committee will, in due course, report on an appropriate use to which this money will be put. MEMBERSHIP: Our membership secretary, Jenny Beale, reports a small decline in membership since this time last year. There are 438 individual/joint members currently on our books; 53 of these had not (as of April 9) renewed their subscriptions; letters of reminder have been sent so this number should be reducing.

At the AGM and in a recent Newsletter I asked members to nominate their favourite museum objects. I thought I would take the editor’s privilege to start the ball rolling with this collection of Anglo/Saxon secular and religious objects, which were found with an unknown number of coins by tin -streamers in 1774, seventeen feet below the surface under a pile of stones. Coins and some articles were lost before Phillip Rashleigh of Menabilly collected what remained of the hoard. The chalice may have been intact when it was found but many fragments have now disappeared. The remaining coins date the hoard to AD 868. The silver scourge is made of tube-knitted wire with plaits and knots terminating in a blue and white veined glass bead from which four tongues, knotted at their ends, spread. The decorated pin has a hollow head. The strap ends and belt slides are silver, but the buckle is cast in bronze. It is not known what the silver carved ornament mounts were attached to. While most of the objects are of Anglo-Saxon design there was a Celtic brooch. The chalice is the only A/S silver chalice found in Britain. It has a gilded inside and rivet holes below the rim indicate an applied rim or decorated band. The bowl and stem were riveted together. The scourge too is unique in Anglo-Saxon collections.
