It’s All in the Word • Activity One: Words Have Power Lesson One: An Introduction to the Holocaust in Hungary Timeline of antisemitistism in Hungary from 1349-1900 1349 – 1480 - Jews expelled from Hungary and blamed for the Black Plague and for refusing to convert to Catholicism. They were eventually allowed to return once the disease passed and when Hungary needed their money (Jews paid an extra tax) and skills. 1490s – Christian Hungarians stole property, money, and goods from Jewish families. The government did nothing to stop them and imposed heavy taxes on Jewish land and business owners. 1500s – The Ottoman Empire conquers Hungary. Ottoman leaders resettle Jewish communities throughout the empire. Some rulers evict all Jews from their provinces while others tax them double the rate of non- Jews. Under Ottoman rule, it is illegal to “harbor” (be friends with, give shelter to) Jews or do any business with them. 1600s – New laws passed by the Ottoman rulers put a double tax on Jews and forbid them from any agricul- tural work, owning real estate, or hiring Christian servants. 1700s – Charles III, who ruled the Austrian province of Hungary, decreed that Jews could only have one child per household. Under the rule of Maria Theresa, Jews were removed from many more cities and towns, taxed at a rate two to three times that of other citizens, and owed an extra tax directly to the queen at the end of every year. Joseph II (Maria’s son), cancels all the oppressive laws against the Jews. However, he also requires all Jews to choose and use a Germanic last name, establish Jewish schools that teach the same curriculum as the nation- al schools, hire Christian teachers for their schools, wait 10 years after attending a school to open a business or start a trade, and serve in the military. Marriage between Jews and non-Jews is still forbidden. 1800 - 1867 – An outbreak of antisemitic riots and demonstrations spread across Hungary during the Hun- garian Revolution. The attacks are directed against Jewish homes, property, and Jewish people. 1867 – The Austro-Hungarian Empire becomes Austria-Hungary. The Hungarian government is granted full governing power over its diverse population. Many ethnic groups are given more rights and Hungarian Jews are granted equal rights under the law. Jewish men may now serve in the government and other jobs denied to them for years. Several Hungarian leaders, afraid that Jews will actually become equal citizens, begin to spread antisemitic ideas in their speeches and in writing. 1879 – The Parliament opens a debate about allowing intermarriage between Catholics and Jews, which was illegal at that time in Hungary. Leaders in the Catholic church, on a national and local level, begin to preach and teach antisemitic ideas. They warn their followers about the dangers of mixing with Jews.1 Intermar- riage is not allowed. 1882 – Two young Jewish men are accused of ritual murder of a young Christian girl, which was a lie. When they are found not guilty, anti-Jewish riots break out across Hungary. Collaborator - a person who supports a system, group, or individual working on a proj- ect or activity. During the Holocaust, the term collaborator refers to a person who sup- ported the projects or activities related to the persecution and murder of Jews and other group sof ‘undesireables.’ Collaborators often did not commit acts of violence, but made those acts possible.

Galgano The Holocaust has raised difficult questions since its end in April 1945 including how could such an atrocity happen and how could ordinary people carry out a policy of extermination against a whole race? To answer these puzzling questions, most historians look inside the Nazi Party to discern the Holocaust’s inner-workings: official decrees and memos against the Jews and other untermenschen1, the role of the SS, and the organization and brutality within concentration and extermination camps. However, a vital question about the Holocaust is missing when examining these criteria: who was watching? Through research, the local inhabitants’ knowledge of a nearby concentration camp, extermination camp or mass shooting site and its purpose was evident and widespread.

    THE HOLOCAUST IN HUNGARY When the Germans entered Hungary on March 19, 1944, its more than 800,000 Jews were the last intact Jewish community in occupied Europe. Between May 14 and July 9 – in less than two months and on the very eve of Allied victory – more than 400,000 were deported to Auschwitz, where 75% were killed immediately. Such swift, concentrated destruction could not have happened without the help of local collaborators – help Adolf Eichmann clearly expected when he brought only 200 staff with him to oversee the deportations. Collaborators included the government, the right wing parties, and the law-enforcement agencies, bolstered by the tacit approval of most non-Jews and Church authorities. Indeed, laws allowing synagogues to be expropriated for secular use and the many private requests for real estate and other property formerly owned by Jews, indicate that few expected any Jews to return. The Vatican, the International Red Cross, the Allies, and the neutral powers also had a role in the catastrophe, since it took place when details of the “Final Solution” – especially the Hungarian situation – were already known to them. In summer 1944, at the height of the deportations, the Allies rejected Jewish underground leaders’ pleas to bomb Auschwitz and the rail lines leading to it, claiming that bombers flying from Britain were incapable of attacking Poland and could not be diverted to targets not "military related." To be sure, pressure from President Roosevelt, Sweden’s king, and the pope – combined with the success of Operation Overlord and the Soviet Union’s summer offensive and Allied intimations they would carpet-bomb Budapest if its Jews were deported – did force Regent Miklos Horthy to stop the trains on July 7, 1944.

    International Conference “The Holocaust: Remembrance and Lessons” 4 - 5 July 2006, Riga, Latvia Evening lecture at the Big Hall of Latvian University The Holocaust in its European Context Yehuda Bauer Allow me please, at the outset, to place the cart firmly before the horse, and set before you the justification for this paper, and in a sense, its conclusion. The Holocaust – Shoah – has to be seen in its various contexts. One context is that of Jewish history and civilisation, another is that of antisemitism, another is that of European and world history and civilisation. There are two other contexts, and they are very important: the context of World War II, and the context of genocide, and they are connected. Obviously, without the war, it is unlikely that there would have been a genocide of the Jews, and the war developments were decisive in the unfolding of the tragedy. Conversely, it is increasingly recognized today that while one has to understand the military, political, economic, and social elements as they developed during the period, the hard core, so to speak, of the World War, its centre in the sense of its overall cultural and civilisational impact, were the Nazi crimes, and first and foremost the genocide of the Jews which we call the Holocaust, or Shoah. The other context that I am discussing here is that of genocide – again, obviously, the Holocaust was a form of genocide. If so, the relationship between the Holocaust and other genocides or forms of genocide are crucial to the understanding of that particular tragedy, and of its specific and universal aspects.

Prof. Dr. Hakan Kırımlı July, 2019 This thesis traces the steps of the Hungarian foreign policy from 1918 to 1946, and analyzes the impact of revisionism after the Treaty of Trianon on Hungarian foreign policy decisions and calculations after the First World War. Placing the Hungarian revisionism at its center, this thesis shows the different situation Hungary had as a South European power as an ally of Germany throughout the Second World War and subsequently under the Soviet occupation. It also argues that it was the interlinked Hungarian foreign policy steps well before 1941, the official Hungarian participation in the war, which made Hungary a belligerent country. Also, based largely on the American archival documents, this study places Hungary into a retrospective framework of the immediate post-war era in Europe, where the strong adherence to Nazi Germany and the Hungarian revisionism shaped the future of the country. While many thousands of Hungarian Jews still were lingering in concentration camps, those Jews liberated by the Red Army, including those of Budapest, soon were warned not to seek any advantages as a consequence of their suffering. This time the campaign was launched from the left. The Communists and their allies, who also had been persecuted by the Nazis, were engaged in a political struggle for the acquisition of state power. To acquire the support of those Christian masses who remained intoxicated with anti-Semitism, and with many of those in possession of stolen and/or “legally” allocated Jewish-owned property, leftist leaders were among the first to 1 use the method of “generalization” in their attack on the facticity and specificity of the Holocaust. Claiming that the events that had befallen the Jews were part and parcel of the catastrophe that had engulfed most Europeans during the Second World War, they called upon the survivors to give up any particularist claims and participate instead in the building of a new “egalitarian” society.     THE HOLOCAUST IN HUNGARY – A CHILD’S PERSPECTIVE George Stefan Grossman I was born in 1938 – just in time for the Second World War. If I live to an old age, I may be among the last of the Jewish survivors of the holocaust. But a succession of medical problems in my mid-60s has reminded me of my mortality. So, in 2006 while on sabbatical from my job as Director of the Law Library on the Davis campus of the University of California, I decided to write this essay about the first seven years of my life and my understanding of the history of that time. I must confess at the outset that I am not entirely comfortable writing as a holocaust survivor. For one thing, my story is not representative. I had a number of unusual lucky breaks. Each time my life was in danger, one of those breaks came along and saved me. I was never deported to one of the Nazi concentration camps. For another thing, I was very young – so young that there is not much I can write based on my own recollections. I do have some memories – including some rather vivid ones – but for the most part, what I think I know of those times is based on what I learned from my elders – including my mother who also survived – and what I learned from the literature. And I make no claim to having read very widely. I have read only things that happened to come to my notice. I have done no systematic research.

A young man for most of the War, Rabbi Berkowits was subjected to life in several Nazi Concentration camps. He recalls Germany invading the Hungarian capital of Budapest and from that moment on he was not longer human, but a number. This interview offers the Rabbi’s unique experience during the Holocaust and it shows, unlike a textbook would, the emotional and physical toll the Nazi regime cost him and other people. Biography Rabbi Laszlo Berkowits was born on February 29th of 1928. He grew up in the small country town of Derecske, Hungary. He lived with parents, two older sisters, a younger brother, and a younger sister. In the small community of Derecske there were about 11,000 people, but only 1,800 of them were Jewish. Growing up, his orthodox religion was very important to him, his family and the community. The temple was the center of life for all the Jews in his hometown. While he was in the concentration camps Rabbi Berkowits said, “Reading the prayer book was an act of passive resistance, an assertion of self” (Berkowits 46).
