LCT C: Urban Valley Floor with Marshlands SPA, which provides a nationally important habitat for overwintering birds. Cultural Influences 4.64 The low-lying land of rich alluvial deposits supported a system of grazing, referred to as the Lammas system5 from the Anglo-Saxon period to the end of the C19th. Grazing rights on the marshes were extinguished by the early C20th and a substantial proportion of the marshlands, with the exception of Walthamstow Marshes, were then modified by industrial activities and landfill, including the dumping of bomb rubble after WW2. In the 1950 and 60s the construction of flood relief channels ended the periodic inundation of the marshlands. 4.65 Communication routes through the valley floor proliferated over the C20th, including pylons, roads and railway lines mounted on embankments, but residential and industrial development remains largely confined to the margins. 4.66 Public access and recreation now characterises much of the marshlands, with some areas managed as nature reserves. However substantial infrastructure, such as the railway lines and flood relief channels and adjacent industrial development, means access through and into the marshes from surrounding urban areas is often severed. BAESH CHARITY THE PITANSRY MEADOW IN AMWELL By Stuart Moye Henry II had a hand in causing the Manor of Stanstead passing from private ownership into the hands of the Religious House at Waltham in 1170. The King was also to change the secular religious house into a Priory in 1177 and subsequently granted it Abbey status in 1184. Sometime after 1177 but before 1203 Ralph Oissel of Amwell granted land in Amwell to the Cannons Regular of Waltham. This Pitansry Land or Meadow appears to have been leased to a local person and the rent arising from this used to financially support the religious house at Waltham. Early records also indicate that this was a riverside meadow. As such it is likely to have been used for summer only pasture as indeed, for centuries was much of the land either side of the river. In 1271 it is mentioned that Pitansry lands belonging to the Abbey at Waltham existed as part of the Manor of Stanstead in both the parishes of Stanstead and Amwell. These arrangements seem to have remained in place until 1st November 1531 when the Abbot of Waltham Robert Fuller, the last Abbott at Waltham, granted the Manor of Stanstead Abbotts to Henry VIII. This included the lands that were part of the Manor but located in the adjacent parishes of Amwell and Roydon. The Pitansry meadow in Amwell thus passed into Royal ownership as part of this arrangement. On the 1st January 1532 in exchange for these properties the King granted The Manors of Blackmore’s and Warmingfield both in Essex, Hormead in Hertfordshire and other lands to the Abbotts of Waltham. -

OLYMPIC LEGACY WATERWAYS FRAMEWORK OLYMPIC LEGACY WATERWAYS FRAMEWORK FOREWORD 3 Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park straddles a previously hidden and derelict network of waterways known as the Bow Back Rivers. Shaped and adapted for over 1,000 years, these 6km of canals and rivers are finally re-connected to England and Wales’ 2,000 mile inland waterways network owned by the Canal & River Trust. They now lie at the heart of one of the biggest regeneration projects in Europe. Across the country waterways are playing a vital role in revitalising our cities in an attractive and sustainable way. The restoration and transformation of the Bow Back Rivers through London’s Olympic plans and through the construction of Three Mills Lock has created a living legacy for London’s people and wildlife, and will form the backbone for a world class water city. The Olympic Legacy Waterways Framework developed by the London Legacy Development Corporation in partnership with the Canal & River Trust looks at how the rivers’ potential can be unlocked so that they are not just a visual backdrop to the surrounding developments, but a leisure and commercial resource in their own right. This strategy expands beyond the 6km within the Park to encompass the River Lee Navigation from Three Mills Island to Hackney Marshes and the lower end of the Hertford Union Canal – a length of 11km in total. A NAVIGATION SCHEME FOR THE RIVER LEA IN THE 1570s B Y STUART MOYE By the mid-1500s the demand in London for goods from the surrounding countryside was rising, which led to the City of London to question the over reliance on road transport and the need to improve the navigation along the “Ware River”. There was a concern in the city that if the road hauliers remained dominant in the transport of goods, they could dictate higher charges and hence raise prices significantly in London. The plans and actual improvements that were made to the navigation in the second half of the 1570s gave rise to conflict between those who used the river and those who felt their livelihoods related to road transport were under threat. Despite the twists and turns in the fortunes of the navigation improvement scheme the growth in barge traffic by 1600 indicates that a considerable increase in transport by barge on the River Lea was achieved. This article attempts to give an overview of the situation as it developed over time with a specific focus on the changes that occurred along the river close to Stanstead Abbotts. The Alderman of London appointed a committee in June 1560 charged with surveying the river between Ware and the Thames. The objective being to see if it could be improved for navigation and how that might be achieved. The main concern of the merchants of London being the transport of fuel [wood], corn, hay flour and other essential provisions to meet the growing demand in the city. -
Looking Forward to the Next Ten Years
Looking forward to the next ten years London Waterway Partnership Ten Year Strategic Plan 2014 1 Welcome I am delighted to present the London Waterway Partnership’s Strategic Plan. Preparation of the plan has taken a good deal of the Partnership’s early effort, but we have been much helped by the reception and comments arising from our draft document and the two consultation meetings held in December 2013. We are also grateful for the written comments received from the Heritage Lottery Fund; the Hillingdon Canal Partnership; London Boaters and Mark Walton, the River Lee Tidal Mill Trust and Westminster City Council. The document has been strengthened by the valuable points made by our respondents, particularly in emphasising the way in which London waterways can enrich regeneration opportunities and support education, training and volunteering. Our strategy is not set in stone. It is designed to develop over time with the continuing input from those supporting our waterways. We will report progress at our Annual Meeting. Our aspirations are ambitious and how quickly the objectives are met, will depend on the resources available in terms of money and support from within the Canal & River Trust and externally. What is not in question is our conviction that the regional and local elements of the Trust’s overall strategy should be emphasised. We set up the Partnership Board of 12 members in July 2013 and deliberately chose to make the board as diverse as possible in order to reflect the very wide range of interests in canals and waterways. I have been impressed by the Board’s commitment and enthusiasm, characteristics which have been reflected in the many people we have met in getting to know the key elements of London’s very diverse waterways. -

This document sets out the guiding principles of how Hackney Council and our partners will work to protect and enhance the wildlife and natural environment of the Borough. The Action Plan has been developed by the Council in collaboration with the Hackney Biodiversity Partnership. Hackney’s open spaces and structures provide homes for a range of common and rare wildlife, including birds, bats and plants. The Biodiversity Action Plan is about more than protecting our wildlife. Biodiversity contributes to our health and wellbeing, provides places for us to enjoy and helps us to adapt to the threat of climate change. This Biodiversity Action Plan identifies the key issues for biodiversity and clearly sets out how we will work to improve our open spaces and built environment. Working in partnership we will raise awareness of the value of our biodiversity, ensure that our green and open spaces are resources that all of our residents can enjoy and promote the wider benefits that biodiversity can provide. Hackney’s environment helps to define the Borough. It is important that we continue to strive to protect and improve our biodiversity, responding to the needs and aspirations of Hackney and its residents in the years to come. -
