I have searched the Bemidji and Fosston papers for the 1955 Stevne, the Duluth papers for the 1958 Stevne, and the 1953 Minneapolis papers for the 1953 Stevne ‐ no luck. I do not believe that the papers have been checked yet for the 1954 Stevne in Spring Valley, WI ( My mistake in originally thinking it was Spring Valley, MN) It may be worth looking in the Decorah Posten for some of the 1950s Stevner that I have not been able to locate information on. Those issues are not available at the MN Historical Society. Stevne in Fergus Falls, 18 June 1910

Østerdølstevne.

Østerdalslaget’s next Stevne will be arranged at the Fairground between St. Paul and Minneapolis Saturday the 16th May at 10 a.m., on the occasion of the big three days 17th May celebration. The northeastern corner of the large “Machinery Hall” will be Østerdølene’s headquarters through the three days. Will mention some of the Saturday program. At 9:30, “The Escape of an Aeroplane”. From 10 to 12 the lags will meet for separate stevnes. At 1:30 business meeting. At 3 there will be two large processions from the Twin Cities and all of the bygdelags will stand together in a row to receive them. At 4 visiting between the lags. At 6 our Lag has our joint meal, price 50 Cts. Splendid program by “Grand Stand” in the evening. Also music and amusing entertainment all day long.

Now it is important to get a numerous attendance. Can’t we show at least 1000 østerdøler on Saturday morning? Remember, we will never again experience an anniversary like this. Let us, as østerdøler, not make a fool of ourselves. Come to our Stevne on Saturday and let us take our seat among the swarming crowd of lag members that will be gathering. But listen now. To be able to arrange for our joint meal on Saturday evening, we need to know how many will appear. Therefore, immediately write to Mr. Th. P. Breen, 111 South 11th Str., Minneapolis, who kindly has taken on this job. One more thing. We have decided to put off the publishing of our “Mindeskrift” until after the 17th. The intention with that is, we intend to make it an Anniversary issue and give all of the Østerdøler the opportunity to sign their names. A number of copies will be sent to every village in Østerdalen as an anniversary memorial from Øster- dalslaget. One copy will be given for free to each member of the lag who has paid his/her member fee. Now to get this “Mindeskrift” from the printing works as soon as possible, everyone who wants to become a member of the lag and wishes to get their name there, should immediately notify the secretary. Please state full name, present address and wherefrom in Norway, and send 50c member fee. Ladies join for free. Let us now get at least 1000 names in this “Mindeskrift”. Our people in Østerdalen will read it with great interest. Let every lag member sign up with at least one additional member before the 16th.

Sincerely,

N. T. Moen, Chair, Fergus Falls, Minn.

To Soløringer and Østerdøler: We hereby make an appeal to all Soløringer and Østerdøler to attend the big Norwegianness-stevne in Winipeg. We arranged it that Østerdølene and Soløringene will be able to meet in a joint stevne in the big gathering hall at the festground, Saturday the 7th July. The undersigned will be present, and will guide all of our people that appear. It would be excellent if those, who intend to go to this stevne and the big party in Winnipeg, would immediately sign up by one of the undersigned. We hope a great deal of our Bygdefolk will appear so we can show ourselves numerous in the great parade through the big city up north. Here will be the opportunity to meet our friends and relatives from Canada as well. Welcome to Winnipeg! C. M. Berg, McIntosh, Minnesota. N. T. Moen, Fergus Falls, Minn. Stevne in Stanley, Wisconsin 14-16 June 1929 Stanley Republican 7 June 1929 Norse Americans from the East Valley meet here; article continued with an explanation: “Norse-Americans from the different localities in Norway are maintaining these associations or “lag”. The purpose of these gatherings is to bring about a meeting of old neighbors, friends, and acquain- tances and through the records and year books of the associations to preserve some of the history and traditions of the pioneer Norsemen in the United States. Rev. K. J. Nielsen of Chicago is President, and Anton Simenson of this city (Stanley) is Secretary of the organization.” The article continued, stating that Rev. J.N. Midtlien was chairman of the program. (He was the pastor of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Stanley. He married my folks and baptized me.) The gathering assembled at the auditorium on Fri. at 2 p.m. for a meeting followed by a program: music by the Stanley Boy’s Band, greetings, and songs by the audience. On Sat. at 9:30 a.m., Mayor H. Gregerson gave the welcome, with response by K. J. Nielsen, and business meeting that continued in the afternoon. Soloist, Paul Strand, and the Stanley High School Chorus and Glee Club provided music at the Sat. night banquet. This event was held in the basement of the Auditorium and served by the ladies of Our Saviors. Religious services were held Sun. morning at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, (I believe that they had one service still held in Norwegian). The program continued into the afternoon with more local music and an address by Waldemar Ager, author and editor, Eau Claire; Judge Oscar Torrison of Chicago and a farewell address by Rev. Midtlien. The article concluded with a solicitation for lodging in private homes for visitors who couldn’t be accommodated by local hotels. Ole Samulson and Anton Simenson are listed as the local committee on arrangements. Ole’s picture is in the center of the article (he was my grandfather’s older brother, all from Folldal).

Stanley Republican 14 June 1929 Østerdals Laget Convenes Here Today “Hundreds of former resident of the Østerdal or East Valley of Norway will arrive in Stanley today for their annual reunion. It is expected that fully 500 visitors will be here.” They expected a large number from Jackson and Pierce Coun- ties, from Minneapolis, and Chicago, traveling by bus, train, or motor car. They expected to reconnect with family and friends from the days of their childhood and enjoy “a good sociable time”. Leaders of the event (Rev. Midtlien, Anton Simenson, and Ole Samulson) were listed again, plus a copy of the program for the weekend.

Stanley Republican 21 June 1929 Østerdals Lag Attracted Many Weekend Visitors, Local Committee Receives Much Praise For Entertain- ment. Interesting Curios. Next was a resolution adopted by the Lag at its closing business session thanking the Stanley community for its hospitality. Ole Samulson and Otto Hendrickson were listed as the Committee. “While the attendance was not quite up to expectations of the local committee (200 ‘mostly transients’ attended the Sat. night banquet), the visitors themselves pronounced the meeting the most successful of any ever held by this organization.”…”There was a good spirit of cooperation by the people of the city, especially by those on the business streets. Flags and bunting were displayed, exhibits of Stanley products, those of the factories were made and several highly interesting collections of antiques from the fatherland of Norway were made. These collections were highly interesting as well as valuable and were a surprise to Stanley people themselves. Displays made in the window of Peter J. Kot, Carl Toft and Long’s contained many curios chief among which were specimens of bibles in the Norsk language, one more than 300 years old. These old bibles would have a high market value among antique collectors as would many of the other articles, especially those in wood carving, household articles of long ago, pipes, hunting knives, fishing tackle, etc. These collections constituted an attraction worth traveling far to see and we wish that somehow they might be made a permanent asset of the city in some place of safe keeping such as the public library or in the State Historical Library at Madison.” Officers for the following year were elected at conclusion of the three day event: President, K.J. Nielson, Chicago; Secretary, Anton Simenson, Stanley; Treasurer, T. O. Udley, Minneapolis; Vice Presidents: John Jemmager, Beloit, WI, Knut Hustad, Minneapolis; and Ole Ryan, North Dakota.

Report from Østerdalslagets Stevne.

Østerdalslagets 20th annual meeting was held 10th June at West Hotel in Minneapolis. The meeting started by the assembly singing, accompanied by Mrs. Ween. After the chairman, Pastor K. G. Nilsen, had opened the meeting by a speech, we passed on to the business. Report was read and approved. A revision committee was appointed, consisting of O. H. Negaard, St. Paul and Martin Becker, Eau Clare, Wis. Next there was held an election of executive committee, and the whole old committee was reelected. Chairman Past. Nilson, Chicago; 1st vice-chairman, John Jevnaker, Beloit, Wis.; 2nd vice-chairman, Knud Haugseth, Mlps.; 3rd vice-chairman, Ole Ryen Wisford, N.D. Secretary Anton Simonson, Stanley, Wis., and treasurer, O. T. Udby, Mlps.

The reports from the revision- and resolution committees were read and approved. The lag decided to give $100 as a memorial gift to a fund in Elverum. A number of speeches were held in this occasion, and there was taken up a collection for the same purpose. They also decided to send a particular greeting to the Os people, expressing the best understanding between them and the Lag.

After a pleasant gathering, the Østerdalslagets annual meeting ended at 4 p.m. and the partici- pants made ready to go to the Norwegian big party in the lecture room.

Wednesday afternoon 11th June the Østerdøler had a big meeting in the lecture room to elect a representative for the Fellesraad. Past. J. E. Løbech was unanimously elected. The chairman, K. G. Nilsen and Past. J. E. Løbeck were elected to publish a yearbook for the Lag. Vice-chairman John Jevnaker was elected to revise the name list over Østerdalslagets member register. Then it was time to say goodbye to each other before we went to the large dining hall where the banquet was to be held, and there were lots of delicious courses. As the Østerdalslaget didn’t have an invitation for the next stevne, it was entrusted to the committee to decide. It will most probably be in the Northwest. We say thank you to the West Hotel for what they did for the Lag, and to all the Østerdøler who attended the Stevne. A devoted greeting to all Østerdøler both in the States and Canada.

Østerdalslaget held their 23rd Stevne at Oslo Cafe in Chicago on 22nd June this year.

Oslo Cafe seemed to be the center of the Norwegianness in Chicago, Norwegian flags and Norwegian accents was seen and heard all over.

We reduced to only one day of meet- ing this year, because of all the other Norwegian festivities that were held this week in Chicago.

The meeting was called into being by the chairman, John Jevnaker. From Fergus Falls Ugeblad the executive committee the chair- 28 June 1933, page 4 man, secretary Nina Tangen, and the Fellesraad representative, Pastor K. G. Nilsen, were present. A prayer was held by Pastor Nilsen. The general/ordinary businesses were went through and done. – Amund Thorson, Mpls, was elected as a temporary treasurer. Greetings was sent from Arne Kildal, general secretary of the Nordmandsforbundets executive commit- tee. From Olaf Slatsveen, Spokane, Wash,: from Oluf O. Torgals Lørdalen, Trysil, Norge, and a very good com- posed letter from our absent treasurer John S. Undseth, Fargo, N.D. He said, among a lot of other things, that being an Østerdøl is worth many times more than the small fee we pay to be a lag member. Our chairman men- tioned that there should be lots of advantages to organize local lags on places where Østerdøler live. Pastor Nilsen supported that, and told about a Trysillag Stevne that both he and the secretary attended in Minneapolis last winter. A committee for the city of Chicago was elected, to try to get the Østerdøler together there. The com- mittee as follows: Pastor K. G. Nilsen, the Hamlander brothers, Asbjørn Nordhagen, Gunda Engblad and Oluf Skogen.

Election for the new committee was carried out later that day. Our chairman was not a candidate, as he signed up for a job in Norway from September 1st this year. Also our treasurer John S. Undseth excused himself because his business doesn’t allow him to travel to the different stevner.

The following were elected: Chairman: K. G. Nilsen, Chicago. Secretary-Treasurer: Nina Tangen, Fargo, N.Dak. Stevne in Fargo, North Dakota 16-17 June 1934 GATHER T() AY
