    LYCRA, LEGS, AND LEGITIMACY: PERFORMANCES OF FEMININE POWER IN TWENTIETH CENTURY AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE Quincy Thomas A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2018 Committee: Jonathan Chambers, Advisor Francisco Cabanillas, Graduate Faculty Representative Bradford Clark Lesa Lockford © 2018 Quincy Thomas All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jonathan Chambers, Advisor As a child, when I consumed fictional narratives that centered on strong female characters, all I noticed was the enviable power that they exhibited. From my point of view, every performance by a powerful character like Wonder Woman, Daisy Duke, or Princess Leia, served to highlight her drive, ability, and intellect in a wholly uncomplicated way. What I did not notice then was the often-problematic performances of female power that accompanied those narratives. As a performance studies and theatre scholar, with a decades’ old love of all things popular culture, I began to ponder the troubling question: Why are there so many popular narratives focused on female characters who are, on a surface level, portrayed as bastions of strength, that fall woefully short of being true representations of empowerment when subjected to close analysis? In an endeavor to answer this question, in this dissertation I examine what I contend are some of the paradoxical performances of female heroism, womanhood, and feminine aggression from the 1960s to the 1990s. To facilitate this investigation, I engage in close readings of several key aesthetic and cultural texts from these decades. While the Wonder Woman comic book universe serves as the centerpiece of this study, I also consider troublesome performances and representations of female power in the television shows Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the film Grease, the stage musical Les Misérables, and the video game Tomb Raider.

Born in Ireland. he grew up mainly in India and was educated in England. finishing at Eton. Hejoined the Royal Navy and learnt to fly. including in gliders. towards the end of the war. and achieved one of his greatest ambitions this year while in New Zealand. a Diamond Award for gliding. This was remarkable considering his age. After the war Norman moved to Hong Kong as representative for BP and later ICI. He then established a partnership trading company serving mainland China. as well as other ventures including a restaurant. His businesses prospered and he bought properties in England. Italy. Canada and NZ. along with boats in most places. He also joined the Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force. flying Harvards and Spitfires. In the 19805 and 905 he gave financial backing to Desmond Norman. designer of the Britain-Nonnan-Islander which found favour with many airlines - and he was a superb cook specialising in Chinese and Italian around the world in the 705 and 80s as a short-haul aircraft. It investigates the conflicting images of reporters in movies and television and demonstrates, decade by decade, their impact on the American public’s perception of newsgatherers in the 20th century. The class shows how it happened first on the big screen, then on the small screens in homes across the country. The class investigates the image of the cinematic newsgatherer from silent films to the 1990s, from Hildy Johnson of “The Front Page” and Charles Foster Kane of “Citizen Kane” to Jane Craig in “Broadcast News.” The reporter as the perfect movie hero.

In 2020, the year of the CO- VID-19 global pandemic, the same family that owns the eight-lane bowling establishment in Wyan- dotte went above and beyond the call of duty. DAVE Robert Woelkers of Riverview GORGON and sister Judy Sadler of Trenton Wyandotte Warrior and their family members and friends combined to raise more than $10,000 for the Goodfellows in a year that the charity’s volunteers were wondering how they were going to raise any funds because of the coronavirus. Todd Browning, treasurer of the Goodfellows and city treasurer in Wyandotte, said the pandemic forced the cancellation of a number of annual fundraising efforts in 2020, which raised concerns about how to pay the Christmas gift-giving bills.
