- Press release - Peaches Does Sherman Wednesday, 10 February 2016, 7:30 pm me Collectors Room Berlin / Olbricht Foundation Auguststrasse 68, 10117 Berlin Opening hours: Tue–Sun, 12–6 p.m. The Canadian singer and musician discusses the Cindy Sherman exhibition and her new album Rub Moderation and concept: Florian Werner Musician, singer, and filmmaker Peaches is one of the most prominent admirers of Cindy Sherman’s photographs. Numerous parallels run through the artists’ work: Both focus on the use of their own bodies in uncompromising, extreme, erotic, and sometimes humourous ways. Both masterfully transform their bodies into supra-individual characters using masks, costumes, and gestures. These transformations raise powerful questions relating to identity and stereotypes, sexuality and gender, the male gaze, and the perception of artists in our society. On the occasion of the exhibition ‘Cindy Sherman – Works from the Olbricht Collection’ (on view until 10 April 2016) in me Collectors Room Berlin, Peaches will join writer Florian Werner in a conversation on her fascination with Sherman’s work, the relationship between Peaches’ own art and Sherman’s photographs, as well as her new album Rub. Since the release of her album The Teaches of Peaches (2000), Peaches has gained a reputation as one of today’s most provocative and glamorous pop stars. Under the title Peaches Christ Superstar she staged Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical as a one-woman show, and later sang the lead part in a production of a Monteverdi opera. In 2012 she released her first full-length motion picture film Peaches Does Herself, and in 2015 she collaborated on the book of photographs What Else Is In the Teaches of Peaches. -

Cross-Dressing to Backbeats: The Status of the Electroclash Producer and the Politics of Electronic Music Feature Article David Madden Concordia University (Canada) Abstract Addressing the international emergence of electroclash at the turn of the millenium, this article investigates the distinct character of the genre and its related production practices, both in and out of the studio. Electroclash combines the extended pulsing sections of techno, house and other dance musics with the trashier energy of rock and new wave. The genre signals an attempt to reinvigorate dance music with a sense of sexuality, personality and irony. Electroclash also emphasizes, rather than hides, the European, trashy elements of electronic dance music. The coming together of rock and electro is examined vis-à-vis the ongoing changing sociality of music production/ distribution and the changing role of the producer. Numerous women, whether as solo producers, or in the context of collaborative groups, significantly contributed to shaping the aesthetics and production practices of electroclash, an anomaly in the history of popular music and electronic music, where the role of the producer has typically been associated with men. These changes are discussed in relation to the way electroclash producers Peaches, Le Tigre, Chicks on Speed, and Miss Kittin and the Hacker often used a hybrid approach to production that involves the integration of new(er) technologies, such as laptops containing various audio production softwares with older, inexpensive keyboards, microphones, samplers and drum machines to achieve the ironic backbeat laden hybrid electro-rock sound. EMlstma Honner ii The Teaches of Peaches: Rethinking the Sex Hierarchy and the Limits of Gender Discourse Christina Bonner Master of Arts, Program in Communication and Culture Ryerson and York University 2010 Abstract: The goal of this Major Research paper is an exploration detailing how Canadian Electro-Pop artist Peaches Nisker transcends nonnative gender and sex politics through perfonnance and frames the female erotic experience in a way that not only disempowers heterosexuality but also provides a broader more inclusive sexual politics. Through this analysis I focus specifically on three distinct spheres; perfonnance, fandom and use of technology to argue that her critique of sexual conventions provides an cxpansive and transgressive new defmition of female sexuality. Musical perfonnances by female artists, particularly icons such as Madonna and Britney Spears, have demonstrated popular culture's inability to legitimize quecr and non compulsory heterosexual practices. -

The "electroclash" movement was basically a revival of the dance-punk style of the new wave. It was New York dj Lawrence "Larry Tee" who coined the term, and the first Electroclash Festival was held in that city in 2001. However, the movement had its origins on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. One could argue that electroclash was born with Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass (1997), released by Belgian dj Ferenc van der Sluijs under the moniker I-f. At about the same time German house dj Helmut-Josef "DJ Hell" Geier was promoting a scene in Berlin that was basically electroclash. Another forerunner was French dj Caroline "Miss Kittin" Herve', who had recorded the EP Champagne (1998), a collaboration with Michael "The Hacker" Amato that included the pioneering hit 1982. The duo joined the fad that they had pioneered with First Album (2001). Britain was first exposed to electroclash when Liverpool's Ladytron released He Took Her To A Movie (1999), that was basically a cover of Kraftwerk's The Model. Next came Liverpool's Robots In Disguise with the EP Mix Up Words and Sounds (2000). -

A Recipe for Choreographic Success
AROUND TOWN FRIDAY, APRIL 23, 2010 [ DANCE ] A recipe for choreographic success Assembly Dance Theatre describes the creator of its newest performance as a chef, with each dancer’s unique skill an ingredient and props as spices BY DiaNE BAKer STAFF REPORTER Assembly Dance Theatre’s (組合語言舞團) latest production, Premiere (首映會), opens at the Experimental Theater in Taipei tonight, although its actual premiere was last Friday at the Sinjhuang City Cultural Center. Since is founding in 1993, Yang Kuei-chuan’s (楊桂娟) Assembly Dance Theatre has developed a reputation for quirky pieces that combine a minimalist Eastern aesthetic with contemporary modern dance, thanks to her training at the University of California, Los Angeles. Yang did the bulk of the choreography for the troupe early on, but in recent years the company’s productions have been more collaborative, as Yang sought out young Taiwanese and other choreographers to create pieces for the troupe. As a professor in the dance department at National Taiwan University of Arts in Banciao, Yang is well placed to talent spot, for both dancers and choreographers. One choreographer who has worked several times with the company is Lai Tsui-shuang (賴翠霜). The Chinese Culture University graduate went on to study dance, music and theater at the Folkwang Academy in Essen, Germany, and joined the Folkwang Dance Studio in 1998. Lai has won several awards for PHOTO COURTESY OF ANGEL CEBALLOS choreography, including the 2009 Taishin Arts Award for Capital Ballet’s production of Surround. Lai has developed a reputation for fluid and dynamic choreography combined with the imaginative use of multimedia and props, which makes for both very interesting staging and very accessible pieces. -

Prerequisites No pre-requisites Units earned 2 credits Course Description A classic album is one that has been deemed by many —or even just a select influential few — as a standard bearer within or without its genre. In this class—a companion to the Classic Albums class offered in New York—we will look and listen at a selection of classic albums recorded in Berlin, or recorded in Germany more broadly, and how the city/country shaped them – from David Bowie's famous Berlin trilogy from 1977 – 79 to Ricardo Villalobos' minimal house masterpiece Alcachofa. We will deconstruct the music and production of these albums, putting them in full social and political context and exploring the range of reasons why they have garnered classic status. Artists, producers and engineers involved in the making of these albums will be invited to discuss their seminal works with the students. Along the way we will also consider the history of German electronic music. We will particularly look at how electronic music developed in Germany before the advent of house and techno in the late 1980s as well 1 as the arrival of Techno, a new musical movement, and new technology in Berlin and Germany in the turbulent years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, up to the present. -

Previous research by academics on the effect of the Internet on popular music has centered on the impact of Napster and peer-to-peer networks on the distribution of recordings (Alexander, 2002; Ayres & Williams, 2004; Bishop, 2004; Daniel & Klimis, 1999; Fox, 2004; Mardesich, 1999; & Oberholzer & Strumpf, 2004). However, unexamined is the influence of the Internet on a specific music subculture, punk. This is important because the subculture is occupied mainly by youth engaged with both the Internet and punk music. The Internet's influence on the punk subculture is a particularly important area of study because the Internet alters how participants in the subculture (punk fans, bands and independent labels) communicate with one another, as well as changes the distribution of punk artifacts and information. ii Central to this study is the history of the major labels' dominance over the distribution and promotion of punk music, a domination examined via critical political economy theory.
