THE REGISTERS OF NEWTOWN LINFORD IN THE COUNTY OF LEICESTER

(from the transcript by A Bernard Clarke) Owing to the situation of this village, its parish records must be considered as of special local interest and value. Her parochial boundaries were not only dispersed form Anstey to Rothley Plain and from Hall Gates to Markfield turnpike, but as outlying member of the manor and Peculiar of Groby, may be said to have embraced districts and scattered farms yet further afield. The records show that dwellers in the extra-parochial districts of Ulverscroft and Maplewell Langdale, as well as the nearer ones of Bradgate and Anstey, sought the spiritual services of Newtown clergy, and were often buried in the shadow of her church, and to this extent can be regarded as orignal sources of information for a large portion of the picturesque district known as Charnwood Forest. It is unfortunate that registers of earlier date than 1654 are no longer available. The register contains one or two entries relating to the Greys, Earls of Stamford, at Bradgate, though not the burials of the Earls in that chapel in 1673 and 1719; there are, however, a few weddings recorded as at 'Broadgate' in the early eighteenth century. Some minor historical queries raised are the possible connection between the Daniel Lamberts, keepers of Bradgate, and the gaoler of Leicester, father of the mighty Daniel, and the identity of the somewhat mythical 'Old John', mentioned in Potter's Charnwood Forest. It is perhaps necessary to remind readers that the ecclesiastical year ran from March 25 to the following March 24, until the year 1752, when the year was altered to its present reckoning, also that page numbers placed in the side margin refer to those which I found marked in pencil near the foot of each page of the actual register. It remains only for the writer to tender his cordial acknowledgements to the Revd J Pigott, vicar of Newtown and Rural Dean, for permission to transcribe this interesting record.

A bound volume in brown soft leather containing 44 parchment leaves measuring upwards of 11• x 7• in with two half-leaves, one of parchment and one of paper, at the back. The entries cover Marriages 1654-1754 and Baptisms and Burials 1654-1785, with memoranda of later date. 2

Pages 1,7,26,27,46,47,57,67,82 and 84 etc are noticeable for faded writing or discolouration, but it has been possible to transcribe throughout. The customary abbreviations are employed, not only by the transcriber but also in the text itself, but it is thought that these will not present any difficulties to the reader.

BAPTISMS, BIRTHS AND BURIALS 1785 - 1809

A stiff parchment book containing 17 leaves 10 x 8• inches. The writing is inferior and illiterate up to about 1800. The inside front cover & fly-leaves bear entries, and those not repeated in their proper place will be found at the end of this typescript. Vol 1 contains several entries for this period also. Baptisms and burials head alternate pages, but, as the former outnumber the deaths, the dates soon become irregular. The words "Pd", "paid Mr F" and "pauper", "poor" etc refer to the Stamp Act of 1783 whereby a duty of 3d was imposed upon all entries in a parish register. Seeing that the names of Starling and Starnel both occur in this record, readers may do well to remember that "starnel" is a colloquialism for that bird, and presumably so used by the parish clerk.

Thirty three printed leaves. As entries start on reverse of the first leaf, and there are four on each page, they total 260. (One space is a blank, but one marriage is recorded on the back cover.) The top outer corner of this book has at some time been burned, but the writing is unaffected. The Revd Joseph Hooley, stated by Potter to be father of Archbishop Howley, performed all the ceremonies 1 - 81 except Nos 8 and 9. The last marriage by him was on June 29, 1782 The Revd George Iliff Foster signs from 25 June 1784 to 5 Sept 1790, and nearly all the marriages from 10 Dec 1798 to the end of the book were performed by the Revd Robert Martin, curate. All available data concerning the contracting parties have been given, but names of witnesses and ministers have been omitted through consideration of space. The parties were from Newtown Linford except where otherwise indicated.

The floorstone for Richard HARCOURT, near the Vestry door, states that he was son and heir of Edward, and died June 1662, and left one son, Charles. This is within the Church.

NEWTOWN REGISTER TRANSCRIPTS

Mr F R Potter, in his 'Charnwood Forest', 1842, stated that records of the Peculiar of Groby were extant from the year 1565, but the Wills from that Court, now deposited separately in the District Registry, must be very imperfect before the year 1719, and the Marriage Bonds, now at Friar Lane, are few in number. The register transcripts of this Peculiar, if in existence, are not available to enquirers, and the following facts are all that the writer has been able to discover. Nine Newtown register abstracts are printed on p 5, Vol 1 of The Genealogist, 1877. From variations in their text these are taken from transcripts and not from the register itself, and cover the years 1677, 1678, 1679, 1681, 1682, 1732, 1733 and 1744. The unnamed contributor was possibly Mr F A Crisp, who in 1884 printed the transcripts of the years 1677-9 inclusive. Further transcripts for the years 1701, 1702, 1705, 1706, 1708 and 1710 were purchased by the Rev W G Dimock Fletcher, having been publicly offered for sale with other muniments belonging to the Peculiar of Groby. Enquiry has been made for these, but they are neither with Mr Fletcher's local collection at Leicester museum nor presented to the Bishop's Registry. There are no old records in the custody of the Steward of the Bradgate Estate. For special causes Newtown transcripts for the years 1616, 1624, 1633, 1634, 1636, 1637 and 1638, all earlier than the first register, were deposited in the Archdeacon's Registry, and are mot kindly being copied by W T Hall, MBE, Esq.
