MARMOREALITIES: CLASSICAL NAKEDNESS IN BRITISH SCULPTURE AND HISTORICAL PAINTING 1798-1840 CORA HATSHEPSUT GILROY-WARE PH.D UNIVERSITY OF YORK HISTORY OF ART SEPTEMBER 2013 ABSTRACT Exploring the fortunes of naked Graeco-Roman corporealities in British art achieved between 1798 and 1840, this study looks at the ideal body’s evolution from a site of ideological significance to a form designed consciously to evade political meaning. While the ways in which the incorporation of antiquity into the French Revolutionary project forged a new kind of investment in the classical world have been well-documented, the drastic effects of the Revolution in terms of this particular cultural formation have remained largely unexamined in the context of British sculpture and historical painting. By 1820, a reaction against ideal forms and their ubiquitous presence during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wartime becomes commonplace in British cultural criticism. Taking shape in a series of chronological case-studies each centring on some of the nation’s most conspicuous artists during the period, this thesis navigates the causes and effects of this backlash, beginning with a state-funded marble monument to a fallen naval captain produced in 1798-1803 by the actively radical sculptor Thomas Banks. The next four chapters focus on distinct manifestations of classical nakedness by Benjamin West, Benjamin Robert Haydon, Thomas Stothard together with Richard Westall, and Henry Howard together with John Gibson and Richard James Wyatt, mapping what I identify as -

British philosopher Joseph Priestly was known for his contributions towards science through his discovery of oxygen and other gases, invention of soda water, and numerous writings on electricity and theories. Priestly supported the idea of phlogiston, a fire like element, and disagreed with the ideas posed by chemist Antoine Lavoisier. --Tokunbo Joseph Priestley(1733–1804) was a British chemist. He was a believer of phlogiston theory, which supports the existence of phlogiston, an element contained in combustible materials, that is supposedly released during combustion. Priestley invented soda water(seltzer), isolated oxygen gas, and perfected the pneumatic trough, an apparatus used to collect gases. --Jaya Living from 1733-1804 in England, Joseph Priestley studied gases such as carbon monoxide. He improved the pneumatic trough, an apparatus designed to trap gases. For an experiment, Priestley heated mercuric oxide and isolated the oxygen released. However, he mistook oxygen for dephlogisticated air, because he observed that it supported combustion. --Christine Joseph Priestly was born in 1733 in Britain and died in 1804. He is mainly credited for having discovered several “airs,” most notably “dephlogisticated air” or oxygen and was the first to isolate it in its gaseous state. He also invented soda water and wrote about electricity. --Alanna Joseph Priestly, born 1733, was a minister turned scientist. In his chemical reactions, he collected gases from his flask by sealing and connecting it to an inverted bottle of liquid. With this method, he isolated gaseous oxygen, which he called "dephlogisticated air," or air without phlogiston. -

The word simultaneously conjures images of fear, violence and brutality with evocations of adventure on the high seas, swashbuckling heroes and quests for buried treasure. Furthermore, the combination of pirates and islands excites romantic fascination (Cordingly 1995, 162-6), perhaps founded upon the popular and sanitised anti-heroes of literature such as Long John Silver and Captain Hook (Mitchell discusses how literature has romanticised piracy, 1976, 7-10). This paper aims to discover, as far as possible, the part Lundy had to play in piracy in British waters, and to place that in perspective. The nature of the sources for piracy around Lundy will be discussed elsewhere (Harfield, forthcoming); here the story those sources tell is presented. It is not a story of deep-water pirates who traversed the oceans in search of bullion ships, but rather an illustration of the nature of coastal piracy with the bulk of the evidence coming from the Tudor and Stuart periods. LUNDY AS A LANDMARK IN THE EVIDENCE The majority of references to Lundy and pirates mention the island only as a landmark (Harfield, forthcoming). Royal Navy ships are regularly recorded plying the waters between the Scilly Isles, Lundy and the southern coasts of Wales and Ireland (see fig. I) with the intention of clearing these waters of pirates, both British and foreign. For instance, Captain John Donner encountered English pirates ':fifteen miles distant from Lundy Isle" in April 155 7 (7.3.1568, CSP(D)). -

Angelica Kauffman Study Day (London, 16 Sep 20) Royal Academy of Arts, London, Sep 16, 2020 Deadline: Apr 15, 2020 Marie Tavinor On the occasion of the retrospective dedicated to Angelica Kauffman taking place in Düsseldorf and London in 2020, the Royal Academy of Arts is organising a study day on the artist on Wednes- day 16 September 2020. A child prodigy and a respected painter famous all over Europe in her own lifetime, Angelica Kauff- man (1741-1807) transcended many boundaries and conventions linked to eighteenth century social norms. She embraced many facets of the Enlightenment beliefs, pursued a career to become a history painter following the neoclassical ideals and worked for some of the most prominent patrons of the time. She was also one of the two female founding members of the Roy- al Academy of Arts in London in 1768. At her death, her sculpted bust was placed next to Raphael’s in the Pantheon in Rome thereby underlining her place in the artistic canon. We welcome papers exploring the rich and versatile career of Angelica Kauffman with a fresh con- textualisation in the broader artistic, cultural, social and economic fabric of the eighteenth centu- ry. After quite a few years, Carter gave up this career and devoted himself entirely to his painting. Carter’s early works were mostly of sea and coastal subjects in watercolors, but later he began to paint figures and use oil paints. Carter’s influences included Charles Napier Hemy, whose style and subjects he greatly admired. Many of Carter’s best works were painted in Scotland and the Shetland Isles. Carter exhibited in the Royal Academy for eleven years and for eighteen years at the New Watercolour Society, now known as the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. Carter’s watercolours were often extremely large, over six feet long. Landina Herring, Lands End, Cornwall is a watercolor that was painted on paperboard and heightened with white. -

It explores a number of trajectories embarked upon by Boydell and his artists in their collective attempt to promote an English aesthetic. It broadly argues that the Shakespeare Gallery offered an antidote to a variety of perceived problems which had emerged at the Royal Academy over the previous twenty years, defining itself against Academic theory and practice. Identifying and examining the cluster of spatial, ideological and aesthetic concerns which characterised the Shakespeare Gallery, my research suggests that the Gallery promoted a vision for a national art form which corresponded to contemporary senses of English cultural and political identity, and takes issue with current art-historical perceptions about the 'failure' of Boydell's scheme. The introduction maps out some of the existing scholarship in this area and exposes the gaps which art historians have previously left in our understanding of the Shakespeare Gallery. -

Priestley’s dynamical conception of matter, Christianity his explanation of the functioning of the brain, and of the production of material ideas are at the basis of the new form of materialism that develops in Germany in the late 1770s, and which differs completely from the model of mechanical materialism Germany was used to in earlier decades. Indeed, the German reception of Priestley’s ideas begins surprisingly early, just one year after the publication of his edition of Hartley’s Observations on Man (1775), and traverses the two final decades of the eighteenth century with a considerable number of reviews and references in the main philosophical journals and works of the time.
