British philosopher Joseph Priestly was known for his contributions towards science through his discovery of oxygen and other gases, invention of soda water, and numerous writings on electricity and theories. Priestly supported the idea of phlogiston, a fire like element, and disagreed with the ideas posed by chemist Antoine Lavoisier. --Tokunbo Joseph Priestley(1733–1804) was a British chemist. He was a believer of phlogiston theory, which supports the existence of phlogiston, an element contained in combustible materials, that is supposedly released during combustion. Priestley invented soda water(seltzer), isolated oxygen gas, and perfected the pneumatic trough, an apparatus used to collect gases. --Jaya Living from 1733-1804 in England, Joseph Priestley studied gases such as carbon monoxide. He improved the pneumatic trough, an apparatus designed to trap gases. For an experiment, Priestley heated mercuric oxide and isolated the oxygen released. However, he mistook oxygen for dephlogisticated air, because he observed that it supported combustion. --Christine Joseph Priestly was born in 1733 in Britain and died in 1804. He is mainly credited for having discovered several “airs,” most notably “dephlogisticated air” or oxygen and was the first to isolate it in its gaseous state. He also invented soda water and wrote about electricity. --Alanna Joseph Priestly, born 1733, was a minister turned scientist. In his chemical reactions, he collected gases from his flask by sealing and connecting it to an inverted bottle of liquid. "Dephlogisticated air" was later renamed oxygen. --Julia Joseph Priestley (1733–1804) was born in Birstall. Because of his phlogiston theory, he was credited for the discovery of oxygen and several other gases. Joseph also published over 150 works, like his work called Experiments and Observation on Different Kinds of Air. --Karen Joseph Priestly lived from 1733 to 1804 in Britain. During his lifetime, Priestly discovered several gasses, best known for isolating oxygen. He studied oxidation, photosynthesis, and carbon monoxide. He believed in the existence of three types of air: alkaline (ammonia), acid (HCl), and fixed (O2). --Katy British chemist, Joseph Priestly lived from 1733-1804. He is best known as the discoverer of oxygen (he isolated dephlogistated air.) Another one of his accomplishments is the pneumatic trough.     THE IMAGE OF THE MAN OF SCIENCE Steven Shapin The relations between the images of the man of science and the social and cultural realities of scientific roles are both consequential and contingent. Finding out “who the guys were” (to use Sir Lewis Namier’s phrase) does in- deed help to illuminate what kinds of guys they were thought to be, and, for that reason alone, any survey of images is bound to deal – to some extent at least – with what are usually called the realities of social roles.1 At the same time, it must be noted that such social roles are always very substantially con- stituted, sustained, and modified by what members of the culture think is, or should be, characteristic of those who occupy the roles, by precisely whom this is thought, and by what is done on the basis of such thoughts. In socio- logical terms of art, the very notion of a social role implicates a set of norms and typifications – ideals, prescriptions, expectations, and conventions thought properly, or actually, to belong to someone performing an activity of a certain kind. That is to say, images are part of social realities, and the two notions can be distinguished only as a matter of convention. Such conventional distinctions may be useful in certain circumstances. So- cial action – historical and contemporary – very often trades in juxtapositions between image and reality. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Joseph Priestley was born on 13 March 1733 to Jonas and Mary Swift Priestley. Jonas Priestley was a dyer and dresser of woolen cloth. Joseph’s mother died when he was young, so much of his early education was provided by his aunt, Sarah Keighley. He went on to study at a local grammar school, and in 1751 entered Daventry Academy. In September 1755 he obtained a parish in Needham Market, Surrey, and he was finally ordained on 18 May 1762. He was called as a tutor to Warrington Academy and taught modern history and languages from 1762 to 1767. He married Mary Wilkinson on 23 June 1762, shortly after beginning work at Warrington. For reasons regarding Mary’s health, the two of them moved to Mill Hill in 1767 where Joseph obtained another congregation. Lord Shelburne (William Petty) hired Priestley as his librarian in 1772, retaining his services until 1880. Priestley then moved on to the New Meeting congregation in Birmingham where he remained until the Birmingham Riot of July 1791. During the riot, Joseph Priestley’s home was burned, he and his family narrowly escaping. The family settled in London for a few years, but sailed for the United States in 1794. Joseph Priestley was a well known figure in his day, and therefore was greeted with much attention when he reached America.

NASH Distinguished Research Professor University of California, Los Angeles n 2018 the American Philosophical Society celebrated its 275th anniversary, though in truth, 1743 is a shadowy date. Some think Ithe APS began in 1727, when Benjamin Franklin, at age 21—having resided in Philadelphia for less than two years since he first arrived in late 1723—convened his famous Junto of leather apron men (Figure 1). Drawing up rules for this private self-improvement group, 12 in number and limited to that size, he tasked “every Member in his Turn” to produce “one or more Queries . to be discuss’d by the Company.’’2 Among the founding group, four were from Samuel Keimer’s print shop (Franklin, Hugh Meredith, Stephen Potts, and George Webb) while the others were shoemakers (John Jones and William Parsons); a surveyor (Nicholas Scull); a scrivener (Joseph Breitnall); a carpenter (William Coleman); an ironmaker (Robert Grace); a glass maker (Thomas Godfrey); and a cabinet maker (William Mangrudge). It was a noble start, indeed an astounding venture, ushered into the world by such a youth striving to implant himself in a young river port, where Quaker merchants and landowners of growing wealth held sway.3 The APS website today claims our Society as an “offshoot” of 1 Read 26 April 2018.     Akihito Matsumoto’s Understanding of Priestley’s Theological Utilitarianism Despite being firmly rooted in the classical tradition, Akihito Matsumoto’s presentation of his paper ‘Happiness and Religion: Joseph Priestley’s Theological Utilitarianism’ was one of the most interesting delivered at the 2009 HETSA Conference. Matsumoto’s focused study of utilitarianism is reflected in the clarity and precision of his paper, and further brings about attention despite its relative irrelevance in regards to contemporary issues. His writing style must be mentioned – there is a logical coherence to his argument, and his conceptualisation of abstract theory is very easy to follow. The fact that English is Matsumoto’s second language lends to its accessibility, however some further editing may be required. The general aim of the paper is to distinguish Priestley’s form of theological utilitarianism from that of Jeremy Bentham’s more widely known utilitarianism, which is based around secular foundations. It is noted that previous studies, including those by the revered historian Joseph Schumpeter, do not fully articulate this important distinction. Matsumoto uses the view by Crimmins, who suggests that theology dominated utilitarian ethics in pre-Bentham England, as a stepping stone into his general argument. What seemed to be a vital and interesting point was that of the extent to which Bentham was influenced by Priestley and his contemporary William Paley – despite a rather direct quote from Schumpeter, Matsumoto unfortunately does not provide further elaboration. Following the introductory first pages, the paper is separated into several sections – Bentham’s secular utilitarianism, Priestley’s theological utilitarianism, the influence that the philosopher David Hartley had on Priestley, the governmental implication of Priestley’s utilitarianism and finally a brief conclusion.

    Chapter 5 JOSEPH PRIESTLEY: TRAIL-BLAZING EXPERIMENTER Goronwy Tudor Jones The First Thirty-one Years oseph Priestley was born near Leeds in Yorkshire on 13th March 1733, Jand continued to live there until he became, at the age of 19, the first student to enrol at the new dissenting academy in Daventry. By the time he left about three years later, along with his main discipline, theology, he had studied philosophy, history, mathematics and science. Furthermore he had gained a working knowledge of six ancient and three modern languages. This formidable intellect was to become one of the most influential men of his time. His varied career took him to Needham Market in Suffolk (1755-58), Nantwich in Cheshire (1758-61), Warrington (1761-67), Leeds (1767-73) and Bowood House in Wiltshire (1773-80) before he came to Birmingham in 1780 for what he described as the happiest period of his life.
