However, the French General was disappointed that the Commander-in-Chief line, four frigates and thirt y- odd transports with nearly 5,500 French regulars. He was born plain James Aitken, an unprepossessing infant in the brood of an indigent Edinburgh blacksmith. Dangling from a gibbet in Ports- mouth town, he departed this life, in 1777, famous or infamous, as John the Painter. Twice James Aitken's crimes flared red on the British horizon—an incendiary whose distorted mind interpreted the torch of liberty as literal rather than allegoric -y who set himself, single-handed, to destroy the might of the king's navy. Boasting him- self an agent of the American Congress, this insignificant little Scottish zealot, ere his destructive path ended, had burned to the ground his majesty's rope house in the Portsmouth navy yard, and had started two alarming, if not serious, fires in busy Bristol. Harken, then, to the tale of James Aitken, alias James Hill, other- wise James Hinde, commonly called, as the old court record set forth, John the Painter. CAVENDISH WEIGHS THE EARTH Newton's law of gravitation tells us that any two bodies attract each other{not just the Earth and an apple, or the Earth and the Moon, but also two apples! We don't feel the attraction between two apples if we hold one in each hand, as we do the attraction of two magnets, but according to Newton's law, the two apples should attract each other. If that is really true, it might perhaps be possible to directly observe the force of attraction between two objects in a laboratory. The \great moment" when that was done came on August 5, 1797, in a garden shed in suburban London. The experimenter was Lord Henry Cavendish. Cavendish had inherited a fortune, and was therefore free to follow his inclinations, which turned out to be scientific. In addition to the famous experiment described here, he was also the discoverer of “inflammable air", now known as hydrogen. In those days, science in England was often pursued by private citizens of means, who communicated through the Royal Society. Although Cavendish studied at Cambridge for three years, the universities were not yet centers of scientific research. Let us turn now to a calculation. How much should the force of gravity between two apples actually amount to? Since the attraction between two objects is proportional to the product of their masses, the attraction between the apples should be the weight of an apple times the ratio of the mass of an apple to the mass of the Earth. The weight of an apple is, according to Newton, the force of attraction between the apple and the Earth: GMm W = R2 where G is the \gravitational constant", M the mass of the Earth, m the mass of an apple, and R the radius of the Earth. -

British philosopher Joseph Priestly was known for his contributions towards science through his discovery of oxygen and other gases, invention of soda water, and numerous writings on electricity and theories. Priestly supported the idea of phlogiston, a fire like element, and disagreed with the ideas posed by chemist Antoine Lavoisier. --Tokunbo Joseph Priestley(1733–1804) was a British chemist. He was a believer of phlogiston theory, which supports the existence of phlogiston, an element contained in combustible materials, that is supposedly released during combustion. Priestley invented soda water(seltzer), isolated oxygen gas, and perfected the pneumatic trough, an apparatus used to collect gases. --Jaya Living from 1733-1804 in England, Joseph Priestley studied gases such as carbon monoxide. He improved the pneumatic trough, an apparatus designed to trap gases. For an experiment, Priestley heated mercuric oxide and isolated the oxygen released. However, he mistook oxygen for dephlogisticated air, because he observed that it supported combustion. --Christine Joseph Priestly was born in 1733 in Britain and died in 1804. He is mainly credited for having discovered several “airs,” most notably “dephlogisticated air” or oxygen and was the first to isolate it in its gaseous state. He also invented soda water and wrote about electricity. --Alanna Joseph Priestly, born 1733, was a minister turned scientist. In his chemical reactions, he collected gases from his flask by sealing and connecting it to an inverted bottle of liquid. With this method, he isolated gaseous oxygen, which he called "dephlogisticated air," or air without phlogiston. -

Adams, John (19 Oct. 1735-4 July 1826), second president of the United States, diplomat, and political theorist, was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts, the son of John Adams (1691-1760), a shoemaker, selectman, and deacon, and Susanna Boylston. He claimed as a young man to have indulged in "a constant dissipation among amusements," such as swimming, fishing, and especially shooting, and wished to be a farmer. However, his father insisted that he follow in the footsteps of his uncle Joseph Adams, attend Harvard College, and become a clergyman. John consented, applied himself to his studies, and developed a passion for learning but refused to become a minister. So despite the disadvantages of becoming a lawyer, "fumbling and racking amidst the rubbish of writs . pleas, ejectments" and often fomenting "more quarrels than he composes," enriching "himself at the expense of impoverishing others more honest and deserving," Adams fixed on the law as an avenue to "glory" through obtaining "the more important offices of the State." Even in his youth, Adams was aware he possessed a "vanity," which he sought to sublimate in public service: "Reputation ought to be the perpetual subject of my thoughts, and the aim of my behaviour." Adams began reading law with attorney James Putnam in Worcester immediately after graduation from Harvard College in 1755. -
