Music, throughout history, has had the unique and mysterious power and ability to transcend time, space and all other types of boundaries. It can unite and change people of all ages and cultural backgrounds whether it uses any language or none at all. Its very essence can reach in and speak directly to a person’s soul, like nothing else can or ever could in our world, since the dawn of time and music itself. As the world changes and the events everywhere are unfurling ever faster and becoming more demanding in our everyday lives, people everywhere are struggling daily as they confront life’s challenges, whether naturally occurring or man-made, while still trying to move forward. At the very heart and soul of this world, our shared world, and every one of us who lives upon it, we share the same basic hopes and dreams in life deep within us. Though our differing thoughts and ways of achieving it often give rise to great conflict, even when our words fail us and our emotions take hold of us; this world’s music, our music, from time immemorial will continue to communicate, nurture, soothe and guide us, as it did for all those who came before us and for all those who will come after us. Music is needed now, more than ever before. That is why the Festival of the Sound that provides these rare and unique opportunities for everyone to experience and enjoy is invaluable. We here at the Bay Street Café are pleased to offer the Festival our continued support www.desmasdons.com and encouragement as they continue to provide us all with the quality and variety of music they have become so famously renowned for. James Campbell

Welcome to the 38th edition of the Festival of the Sound. It is becoming a common saying here that May brings the 2017 supporters black flies, June the mosquitos, and July the musicians.

Continuing this line of thought, August (after the Festival ends) brings a brief rest, and in September, the planning for the following summer begins in earnest and the Festival's rhythm starts to flow.

Autumn, for me, is the time to sort through the numerous ideas that continually appear to me in many different ways. Some come unannounced (and sometimes unwanted) from the silence of the middle of the night, some while listening to music, many are suggestions by colleagues, and some from young artists looking for opportunities to grow. However, many are the

results of a casual conversation with you. For example, our beloved Doris Charles & Lois Stockey Brown suggested a concert to include the Hallelujah Chorus; that seed of an idea grew into the concert on August 11, appropriately called “Hallelujah!”

Autumn is also the time when the board and staff are busy doing the SPONSOR Become a sponsor of the Festival of the Sound and reach a whole myriad of tasks that are so essential to the health of the Festival.
