The 3rd European Workshop on Sea Buckthorn (EuroWorkS2014) was held in Naantali, Finland on 14th to 16th of October 2014 under the theme “Producing Sea Buckthorn of High Quality”. Conference concentrated on three topics that were recognized to be current under the theme: sea buckthorn fly, cultivation technology and standardization of sea buckthorn. A special attention was paid to sea buckthorn fly because of its rapid and destructive invasion to Europe. Protective measurements need to be studied fast to get this new pest under control. Also long-term strategies are needed in order to continue efficient berry production, also without pesti- cides. Dr. Ljubov Shamanskaja has a long research experience with sea buckthorn fly in Barnaul, Rus- sia, where the fly has been a problem over 20 years. -

This update details 4 species new to the main list and 3 to Appendix A. Numerous taxonomic changes are incorporated and country distributions are updated. Homolobus (Phylacter) meridionalis van Achterberg, 1979 впервые указывает- ся из Азии (Иран). Кратко обсуждаются таксономические признаки видов и подродов. Приводится определительная таблица иранских видов рода Homolobus. INTRODUCTION The subfamily Homolobinae includes three genera and 62 described species worldwide (Yu et al., 2012). Members of the Homolobinae are large size and have an "ophionoid facies". The genus Homolobus Förster, 1862 is the largest genera of the subfamily with about 55 known species in the world and 20 species of it are known in the Palaearctic region (Yu et al., 2012). Members of Homolobus are solitary koinobiont endoparasitoids of Lepidopteran larvae (Shaw & Huddleston, 1991; Kenis et al., 2005), but has a final ectoparasitic phase (Allen, 1982). -

Newsletter 30 LEAFMINESNEWSLETTER M a rch 2 0 15 Recent additions to the host plant list The host plant list for Britisn leafminers of Pitkin and Plant is maintained on both the leafmine site (www.leafmines.co.uk and the UKflymines site (www.ukflymines.co.uk). If a host plant is not listed on these websites you may assume that it will be new to the UK. We need proof that the addition is correct. It may be possible from photographic evidence or it may need breeding through to determine whether the identity is correct. It may need DNA analysis before a new host plant is added as Ian Barton and Kathleen Rosewarne found when they discovered Phyllonorycter mines on Chaenomeles japonica. The species was unclear even when he bred the moths out and performed a genitalia dissection. Subsequent DNA analysis indicated that the species was Phyllonorycter sorbi and a new host plant for this species was added to the list. (Barton & Rosewarne, Entomologist’s Rec J Var (2014) 126, 93-96). The following recent new additions are illustrated. Phyllonorycter leucographella (Lep:Lithocolletinae) on Elm (Ulmus) Page 2 www.leafmines.co.uk Steve Hind writes ‘I found this Phyllonorycter leucographella mine on Elm on 26.x.2014 in Hyde Park, Hyde, Cheshire, VC58, which may be a new food plant. The small Elm, about two feet tall, was growing through a Pyracantha bush and the mined leaf was amongst those of the Pyracantha, so I guess the female moth was easily confused when laying the egg.’ Photo © Steve Hind Coleophora albitarsella (Lep: Coleophoridae) on Salvia On 07.vii.2014 Stewart Wright found 40+ cases of Coleophora albitarsella feeding on Salvia africana azurea in his garden in Norfolk. -

Wimbledon and Putney Commons ECOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING REPORT 2020 BILL BUDD It is with great sadness that we must report the death of Bull Budd in autumn 2020. Bill was our much respected, dragonfly and damselfly recorder and a member of the Wildlife and Conservation Forum. As well as recording on the Commons, Bill also worked as a volunteer at the London Natural History Museum for many years and was the Surrey Vice County Dragonfly Recorder. Bill supported our BioBlitz activities and, with others from the Forum, led dedicated walks raising public awareness of the dragonfly and damselfly populations on the Commons. In September 2020 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the recording and conservation of Odonata, a newly identified dragonfly species found in the Bornean rainforest* was named Megalogomphus buddi. DE VALKRUIDMINEERVLINDER DIGITIVALVA ARNICELLA IN NEDERLAND: HERONTDEKKING EN BEHOUD (LEPIDOPTERA: PLUTELLIDAE: ACROLEPIINAE) Erik van Nieukerken & Sjaak Koster De valkruidmineervlinder Digitivalva arnicella leek al sinds het begin van de eeuw uit Nederland verdwenen. Niemand had echter speciaal op deze soort gelet, en toen de auteurs in Drenthe de laatste grote groeiplaatsen van valkruid bezochten, bleek dat het vlindertje er waarschijnlijk nooit is weggeweest. In totaal werden acht populaties van de vlinder vastgesteld, waarvan er in de laatste zes jaar twee verdwenen zijn. Vroeger moet de vlinder overal waar valkruid groeide gevlogen hebben. Dat kon op een bijzondere wijze worden vastgesteld: niet in insectencollecties, maar door rupsen- mijnen in historisch herbariummateriaal van Arnica te onderzoeken. Met de voed- selplant is D. arnicella enorm achteruitgegaan en momenteel zeer ernstig bedreigd in zijn voortbestaan in ons land. Bij het beheer van de groeiplaatsen van valkruid zal daarom speciaal gelet moeten worden op deze soort. Het wegmaaien van de hele vegetatie in augustus, zoals dat nu op sommige vindplaatsen gebeurt, is in elk geval funest voor de rupsen, die dan in de bladeren zitten. Valkruid of wolverlei (Arnica montana L.) Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe. -

Abstract This thesis departs from the loss of biodiversity due to artificial light at night. The diurnal human has taken over all hours of the day instead of the natural light once, meaning that space and time have become limited for the nocturnal living species. Earlier research concern how darkness and artificial light affect either animals, insects, and plants, or humans’ health. The combination of the two, however, remains largely unresearched. Therefore, this geographical thesis dives into this gap by exploring humans and biodiversity in relation to darkness and artificial light. Building on that exploration, the aim was further to formulate generative ways forward in the matter. A qualitative method was conducted, consisting of a self-written Darkness Diary and walking interviews with a moth-expert, a bat expert, and a light designer and light artist. The theory of all-ecology was applied as an ontological stand and a geographical toolbox. Non- representational theory (NRT) was further applied as a guide in the exploration of experience.
