Primary Years 1 and 2

Years 1 and 2 are critical for setting children along the path to success. Students in 1 need to feel confident in their reading and understand how numerical facts relate to the world around them.

Redbridge Tuition:

– employs specialist tutors – considers the learning needs of young children – provides a fun learning environment

4 www.redbridgetuition.co.uk Early Years

Maths At , students are expected to build a firm grounding in mathematical facts that act as a springboard to success in .

In years 1 and 2 children are taught maths to secure fluency with whole numbers. This involves working with numerals, becoming more familiar with mathematical vocabulary and using the four operations.

Counting is the first step of the journey. Children are transitioned from working using concrete methods to abstract methods of calculation.

Students working towards 7+ exams need to have developed excellent problem solving skills.

At Redbridge Tuition, we make this one of our key focuses during sessions.

English At key stage 1, students need to build their confidence with different types of texts.

Literacy is perhaps the most important aspect of learning, as the strides that children make in their reading and writing at a young age, holds significant predictive power for their later academic performance.

Reading and comprehension form an extensive component of the key stage 1 curriculum. Students can vary greatly in their literacy levels at this age so we make a particular effort to understand their needs and provide them with tasks that move them forward.

Students taking 7+ exams need to have built an extensive vocabulary, should be reading advanced texts and be confident writers.

At Redbridge Tuition, we help children rise to this challenge.

Primary Years 3 to 6

The key stage 2 years are significant because they provide the platform for students to succeed at .

Redbridge Tuition:

– encourages students to build their independence of thought – helps your child gain entry to their target secondary school – helps them to excel in their new school by equipping them with skills to thrive

Maths Key stage 2 represents a significant step-up from key stage 1 in terms of mathematics.

At Redbridge Tuition, our rigorous mathematics curriculum helps build confident mathematicians, who can become the problem-solvers of the future.

Students are expected to understand advanced foundational concepts. At key stage 2, it becomes increasingly important for students to be able to apply their knowledge to multi-step problems. The skills required for year 6 SATs are covered in detail.

In addition to helping students reach the expected standards, at Redbridge Tuition, we specialise in stretching students to go beyond the curriculum if they are preparing for the highly competitive eleven plus and independent school exams.

Whether your child is struggling with the basics or is working beyond their peers, Redbridge Tuition’s dedicated team can help.

English At key stage 2, students’ literacy skills are expected to progress considerably.

Students are expected to engage with more challenging texts. Their technical knowledge (of grammar, vocabulary and sentence structures) is also expected to develop considerably.

The 11 plus and independent school exams have a high standard is extremely high. Students will need to learn how to navigate especially difficult texts. Furthermore, they will need to be able to learn how to write with flair, using various literacy techniques.

At Redbridge Tuition, our tutors work hard to ensure that children can transition from primary to secondary school and develop into confident and effective communicators.

Our tutors have a wealth of experience for entry to grammar and independent schools and will steer you in the right direction.

Reasoning Reasoning is a key component in 11 plus exams and some independent school tests.

Reasoning is the application of logical thinking to solve a problem. A student’s ability to reason is thought to be heavily linked to general intelligence, so reasoning components tend to be heavily weighted in selection tests.

At Redbridge Tuition, we help students think more logically and give them vital exposure to the required skills. Our experienced tutors will help children build their confidence for test situations.

Verbal Verbal reasoning is typically the application of logical thinking to problems involving words and letters.

Our reasoning workbooks provide clear explanations of how to approach each question type and then practice each skill.

Non-Verbal Non-verbal reasoning is the application of logical thinking to problems involving diagrammatic figures. It involves understanding and analysing visual information to solve problems.

These types of problems can loosely be split into 2D problems and 3D problems.

Our reasoning books allow students to acquire the necessary vocabulary to discuss and understand these problems. Furthermore, we teach students to develop their visualisation and problem solving skills, so guessing the answers remains a last resort.

Secondary Years 7 to 11

The secondary school years comprise and 4. This is a critical time for students to gain their formal qualifications to improve their chances of professional success.

Many of our students have gone on to study at top universities after achieving excellent results in their formal examinations. Some former alumni have even come back to work with us!

Redbridge Tuition:

– provides students with a consistent and nurturing environment – employs subject specialists who understand the subject in details and demands of the exams – gives students the flexibility and stability they need

10 www.redbridgetuition.co.uk Secondary Years

Maths At key stage 3 and beyond, many mathematical concepts are expanded upon in greater detail.

Studying mathematics helps students develop their logical thinking, prepares them for careers where high-levels of numeracy are required, and prepares them for a world of work where mathematics knowledge is in high demand.

At Redbridge Tuition, we encourage students to develop a deep understanding of both foundational and advanced mathematical concepts, so that they can approach exams with confidence, grow to enjoy and even fall in love with the subject as they understand how it links to the world in which they live.

English At key stage 3 and beyond, a greater emphasis is placed upon extended writing and analysis.

Students are expected to build their knowledge of writers who have influenced and impacted the English language such as Shakespeare.

At secondary school, establishing both the context and the effect behind the words becomes more important. At Redbridge Tuition, we have helped students acquire a deeper understanding of the subject by equipping them with knowledge of writing techniques, providing an understanding of structure, and giving constructive criticism of their written work. Our tutors help students to learn how to analyse a given text and respond.

Science At key stage 3 and beyond, students’ understanding of science ought to accelerate greatly.

They start to learn about natural and physical processes, and establish a strong grounding in scientific methods.

At Redbridge Tuition, we have a key stage 3 curriculum that is designed to propel students to success at GCSE by giving them clear grounding in the foundations of science.

KS3 science is split into four areas: The first is the skill-based area of working scientifically. The other three, are the three sciences; biology, chemistry and physics.

Our aim is to help students understand the theoretical aspects and assist them in understanding how science underpins their own lives and existence.

If a student is able to master the concepts introduced at Key Stage 3, then greater success usually follows at GCSE.

At GCSEs, it becomes necessary to ensure that enough time is dedicated to each science, so we have dedicated biology, chemistry and physics classes, led by highly-knowledgable tutors.

12 www.redbridgetuition.co.uk KS4 Secondary Years

Biology KS4 biology explores the key principles behind the science of living organisms, big and small, how they interact with each other, life and Earth itself.

Biology is a content-heavy subject. Students need to integrate their knowledge of facts and apply them in various scenarios and case studies.

At Redbridge Tuition, we help students to grasp this mass of information in small portions. This allows them to gain confidence in the subject by exam time.

Chemistry KS4 chemistry explores the key principles behind the behaviour and makeup of matter as well as the elements.

Chemistry is a subject which heavily builds on prior knowledge. The key difference between chemistry and the other two core sciences is that it focuses on the mixtures and elements that are found in nature, or manually created.

We help students establish a firm grasp of the foundations, which over time, develops into a more mature understanding.

Physics KS4 physics explores the key principles behind the universe and everything about it, delving into greater depth about key topics that define our everyday life.

Physics is a subject that is only grasped with a firm understanding and application of laws. Many students find physics be a challenging subject. One of the main reasons for this is because it is a maths heavy subject.

At Redbridge Tuition, tutors concentrate on helping students learn laws accurately, and look into the implications and effects that these laws have on the world around us.
