AMBIENTE – Originaria delle zone montane del bacino mediterraneo, in Italia è molto comune su tutto il territorio. Cresce nei prati poveri, nei pascoli, nei luoghi erbosi, nelle radure boschive, dal piano a 1500m. CARATTERI BOTANICI FUSTO – La parte aerea del fusto è ascendente (legnosa in basso). La superficie è ricoperta di peli inclinati. I fusti sono alti 30-80 cm. FOGLIE – Le foglie, opposte, sono ovato-ellittiche e crenato- serrate ai margini. FIORI – I fiori hanno una grande corolla bilabiata e sono azzurro- violacei o rosa, riuniti in infiorescenze ascellari. Fioritura: maggio- ottobre FRUTTI - Il frutto è uno schizocarpo composto da 4 nucule glabre e lisce. Le nucule sono provviste di areole di colore marrone. USI - La pianta ha proprietà terapeutiche digestive, diaforetiche, carminative, febbrifughe, stomachiche ed espettoranti. I suoi principi attivi si trovano in oli essenziali, mucillagini e tannini e si consumano sotto forma di infusi o tinture. È usata anche contro la depressione, l'insonnia e i dolori mestruali. Le foglie tritate insaporiscono, con un gradevole aroma simile a Satureja nepetoides Famiglia LAMIACEAE quello della menta, numerosi piatti di carne, pesce e funghi. Vi si può produrre del miele, ma è rarissimo, perché la pianta, anche MENTUCCIA, NEPETELLA se abbastanza comune, non è mai abbondante; comunque è molto bottinata dalle api ed è buona una fonte di nettare e ETIMOLOGIA - L'etimologia del nome Satureja è incerta. Forse polline. In Sicilia entra a far parte dell'aromatizzazione delle olive da tavola. Nel Lazio si usa per la preparazione dei carciofi alla deriva dalla radice latina "satura" che significa "sazia", in riferimento alle supposte proprietà digestive dei succhi delle romana. -

Hence the need to design a database of the Italian alimurgic flora: AlimurgITA. Only strictly alimurgic taxa were chosen, excluding casual alien and cultivated ones. The collected data come from an archive of 358 texts (books and scientific articles) from 1918 to date, chosen with appropriate criteria. For each taxon, the part of the plant used, the method of use, the chorotype, the biological form and the regional distribution in Italy were considered. The 1103 taxa of edible flora already entered in the database equal 13.09% of Italian flora. The most widespread family is that of the Asteraceae (20.22%); the most widely used taxa are Cichorium intybus and Borago officinalis. The not homogeneous regional distribution of WEPs (maximum in the south and minimum in the north) has been interpreted. Texts published reached its peak during the 2001–2010 decade. Pollinator Garden Plant Suggestions - Perennials Heart of Uwchlan Project Tips for Planting a Pollinator Garden • Assess your location. Is it dry? Often wet? Is soil clay or loamy? How much sun or shade? Select plants appropriate to the conditions: “Right plant in the right place.” • Plant so you have blooms in every season. Don’t forget late summer/autumn bloomers; migrating butterflies need that late season pollen and nectar. • Plant for a variety of flower color and shape. That’s prettier for you, but it also appeals to a variety of pollinators. Some bees and butterflies prefer specific plants. • Plant in groups of at least three . easier for pollinators to find and browse. • Don’t forget the birds. Plant tubular flowers for hummingbirds, bushes with berries for birds (see related Plant List for Shrubs). • Finally, do minimal cleanup in the fall. Leave the leaves, dead stems and flower heads. Beneficial insects like miner bees lay eggs in hollow stems, finches will eat the echinacea seeds. Many butterflies and moths overwinter as pupae in dead leaves. Spring Blooming Golden-ragwort (Packera aurea) – mid to late Spring – Damp location, shade Grows freely and naturalizes into large colonies. Yellow flower heads, blooms for over 3 weeks in mide- to late spring. Dense ground cover. Prefers partial sun, medium shade. Prefers moist, swampy conditions. Cut back bloom stalks after flowering. Golden Alexander (Zizia aurea) – blooms May-June – prefers wet habitats but will tolerate dry Attractive bright yellow flower which occurs from May – June, looks like dill in shape. An excellent addition to a wildflower garden because it provides accessible nectar to many beneficial insects with short mouthparts during the spring and early summer when such flowers are relatively uncommon. -

Observations on their use and efficacy significantly contribute to the disclosure of their therapeutic properties. Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi is an aromatic herb with a mint-oregano flavor, used in the Mediterranean areas as a traditional medicine. It has an extensive range of biological activities, including antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, as well as anti-ulcer and insecticidal properties. This study aims to review the scientific findings and research reported to date on Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi that prove many of the remarkable various biological actions, effects and some uses of this species as a source of bioactive natural compounds. On the other hand, pulegone, the major chemical constituent of Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi essential oil, has been reported to exhibit numerous bioactivities in cells and animals. Thus, this integrated overview also surveys and interprets the present knowledge of chemistry and analysis of this oxygenated monoterpene, as well as its beneficial bioactivities. -

Spring isn’t far away and I’m sure many of you are spending this time planning new gardens and deciding on plants to add to your landscape. We hope that you will find some inspiration from the articles in this newsletter. Her gardens are surrounded by the Michaux State Forest and reflect the serenity and beauty of the area. This is the first garden in our ‘Garden of Merit’ articles where mosses were an integral part of a garden bed. Describe your garden—size, type? We live on the edge of the Michaux State Forest, near Carlisle. Our home is about 3 miles from Pine Grove Furnace State Park. We have about an acre. It is primarily wooded with chestnut, oak, red maple, sassafras, and hemlock. The area cleared for the house includes gardens that are both sunny and shady. The sunny spots are not as sunny as they were when we first moved in 12 years ago! The trees have grown a lot and I was not very forward thinking in setting some of my planting areas. -

Acinos, Ajuga, Ballota, Calamintha (Clinopodium), Coridothymus, Cyclotrichium, Dorystoechas, Hymenocrater, Hyssopus, Lallemantia, Lavandula, Marrubium, Melissa, Mentha, Micromeria, Nepeta, Ocimum, Origanum, Pentapleura, Perilla, Phlomis, Rosmarinus, Salvia, Satureja, Scutellaria, Sideritis, Stachys, Teucrium, Thymbra, Thymus, Wiedemannia, and Ziziphora species were comparatively listed and grouped referring to their major essential oil components. In addition, commercially important culinary and aromatic plants of Lamiaceae were also highlighted. Keywords: Lamiaceae, essential oil, aromatic plant Introduction Turkey is situated in geographically between 42°N and 36°N altitudes. She is under the influence of three different climates, namely: Mediterranean, Continental, Oceanic. Her transect is between the sea level and 5137 m (Mt. Ararat). Anatolia is a peninsula thrusting from east to west. She has land in Anatolia and Thrace being at the junction of Asia and Europe. Turkey covers ca. 0.8 million sq. km. and supports ca. 80 million of human population in the rich flora and fauna. Turkey is at the junction of three phytogeographic regions. Aegean and Mediterranean coastal areas are under the Mediterranean influence. Central and eastern parts enjoy the Irano-Turanian influence and the northern parts are affected by the Euro-Siberian phytogeography.
