SALAMI CIARAN LAVERY Anderson Yes thank you, thank you both of you, I’m not sure which is worse, baffling, shocking or pleasant. But hello and welcome anyway to the first Loose Ends of 2017, as we go forward into the New Year in a spirit of hope and optimism. Things can only get better – or to put it another way - things can scarcely get any worse. Though with Donald Trump just about to become leader of the free world, Boris Johnson already in post as Britain’s top diplomat and Jeremy Corbyn continuing to be leader of the opposition, who can be sure? But we crack on here with a studio-full of top line guests, even more smartly dressed than shoppers in a Tesco superstore, including the comedian and actor Hugh Dennis, star of Radio 4’s the Now Show, BBC 2’s Mock the Week and these days virtually every comedy drama broadcast on the TV, here to tell us about the programmes and the Lord of Misrule, which you’ve just been hearing from, which have taken charge of Radio 4 today. And the award winning comedian and Lady of Misrule, Bridget Christie, here because you demanded it, or at any rate to tell us about her stand up show called Because You Demanded It, which was one of the benefits of Brexit unpredicted by the so called experts. -

It lurches from the planet-defining to to the local history. The sense of paranoia that had long fuelled the conspiracy theories of fringe political groups then somehow became the norm for millions The s were a theme park of mass paranoia. I originally started this book because of the author. The Wilson and Marcia saga may be the most horrifically funny political saga ever, what with Marcia's fears of being lured unawares into orgies, Wilson's bizarre acceptance of whatever abuse she threw his way and some staff members wondering if offing Marcia might not be the best for England. Aug 15, Robin rated it liked it. Reminds me of Nick Hornby's work. Wheen stops in the mids and one wonders if the madness stopped then or continues to go on at the top levels of governments around the world. Time even ran a cover story last December calling it " the Decade from Hell. Jun 07, C rated it it was ok Shelves: history , s. We have recently updated our Privacy Policy. -
Review: Punt and Dennis – Ploughing on Regardless | Nouse

Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Arts › Features Reviews Books Review: Punt and Dennis – Ploughing on Regardless Hilarious radio duo Hugh Dennis and Steve Punt take to stage as Katy Sandalls reviews Monday 17 February 2014 Photo courtesy of Punt and Dennis ★★★★☆ As a perennial fan of Hugh Dennis and Steve Punt’s inputs on the BBC Radio 4 programme The Now Show, the prospect of seeing them live on stage promised to be a treat – and it didn’t disappoint. Indeed, sat in the majestic setting of the York Grand Opera House, at times it felt like I was at a recording of the radio show with Punt producing his usual masterful set ups for Dennis to later pick up and run with. And run he did, with topics ranging from the TV listings experience to our obsession with the snow the show touched upon every possible avenue. One thing that did come across, lost to a radio audience, was Dennis’ mastery of visual comedy. A particular favourite being his take on the giving out of buns in Denmark to celebrate the signing of the treaty of Rome. That was the first and probably the last time I will see a man old enough to be my father walk in circles around a stage with the flap of jacket lifted up showing the audience his “beautiful buns”. Punt’s earlier cynical comment really summed this up well; the pair are indeed “wasted on the radio”. -

Is The New York Times "Actual Malice" Standard Really Necessary? A Comparative Perspective Russell L. Weaver* Geoffrey Bennett** In New York Times Co. v. Sullivan,' the United States Supreme Court extended First Amendment guarantees to defamation actions.2 Many greeted the Court's decision with joy. Alexander Meiklejohn claimed that the decision was "an occasion for dancing in the streets. ' 3 He believed that the decision would have a major impact on defamation law, and he was right. After the decision, many years elapsed during which "there were virtually no recoveries by public officials in libel 4 actions." The most important component of the New York Times decision was its "actual malice" standard. This standard provided that, in order to recover against a media defendant, a public official must demonstrate that the defendant acted with "malice.' In other words, the official must show that the defendant knew that the defamatory statement was © Copyright 1993, by LoUIsIANA LAW REVIEW. -
