GUIDE TO THE 1968 ERNEST BRADBURY ARCHIVE

"Beethoven’s Choral Symphony is a hard, massive rock on whose unyielding surface conductors often try in vain to chisel their own image".."wrong notes as plentiful as blackberries in late summer; nerves as raw as a peeled carrot; techniques reduced to self-conscious mannerisms., the whole dreadful business of publicly walking the plank".. "The conductor and soloist are young men in whom the artistic sap is still rising". With such observations, threaded through with musings on how Czechs play Elgar and English play Dvorak, with audience numbers and the weather, do we know about Ernest Bradbury’s musical year 1968. For sheer delight I turn to his Christmas Fantasy, MM 24.12.68.

His non-music writing, as at Edinburgh, is included but not listed, nor are individual members of trios etc unless soloists. Works without composers and vice versa are seldom included. The Edinburgh Festival programme is included. One curiosity this year is my husband’s seeming absence from his favourite festival, the Three Choirs.

MM and RR denote the Music and Musicians and Recent Records columns. They are placed immediately at the end of the year’s reviews. MM Magazine (Music and Musicians Magazine) and other publications are in the body of the cuttings, all of which are from the Yorkshire Post, unless otherwise stated. The Miscellaneous reference sheets 34 and 35 should not be overlooked; items are not in any particular order.

As I write I have only carbons for RR 5.4.68 and 4.10.68; hopefully the Brotherton will have supplied photocopies of the printed article. For omissions and errors I apologise: please bring them to the attention of the librarian.
