Education & Library 40 State Services

State Services touring programs reached over a third of a million people this fiscal year, including visits to 82 Arkansas communities in 58 counties. In addition a Children’s Theatre on Tour production appeared in Ruston, LA. A fee support grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation provided funding assistance for Artmobile and Young Arkansas Artists Traveling Exhibitions. The Arts Center is in the 9th year of a 10-year grant providing Artmobile programming in underserved areas of the state. These two grant opportunities greatly enhanced the Arts Center’s ability to serve all Arkansans throughout the state.

Total attendance: 345,973 Arkansas Arts Center’s State Services Programs served all shaded counties during FY 2008-2009 Artmobile The Artmobile featured an all-new exhibition, ART!—Works from the Permanent Collection. Including works in all mediums, three separate exhibitions were curated and installed for 3-month periods, allowing less exposure and better protection of the Arts Center’s works. The exhibition answers the following questions: Why museums collect art?, How museums collect art?, What makes the Arkansas Arts Center collection special?, and explains why Drawings, Contemporary Craft, Painting, and Prints play predominant roles in our permanent collection. During the year, the Artmobile traveled to 41 different locations in 29 communities. Communities reached and the number of times the Artmobile visited more than one sponsor in the same town include:

Alpena Lake Village Ozark (2) Altus Little Rock (4) Perryville Bentonville Malvern Pine Bluff (4) Cedarville McCrory Rogers (2) Dardanelle Melbourne Russellville Fayetteville (3) Monticello Star City Greers Ferry Morrilton Texarkana Hope Mountain Home Waldron Jasper Newport (2) West Memphis Kingston Norfork

A grant from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation allowed the Artmobile to visit underserved, rural communities for 10 weeks, while the Altheimer Foundation provided funding for 4 weeks of pro- gramming in Jefferson County. The Wal-Mart Foundation grant provided fee support for Artmobile tours throughout the state.

State Services touring programs continued to serve over a third of a million people during the 2008-2009 fiscal year. However, the year marked a less than 2% decrease in numbers reached from the previous year. This loss is most noticeable in the Children’s Theatre on Tour figures. Bookings for this fiscal year were down primarily as a result of increased school testing, economic factors, and even school consolidation. We continued to receive a fee support grant from the Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club Foundation that had a significant impact on Artmobile and Young Arkansas Artists bookings. A grant from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation for delivering the Artmobile to rural, underserved areas helped the Arts Center reach communities that, otherwise, could not afford the program. Appearing at the Arkansas State Fair and Riverfest helped keep the Artmobile attendance figures high. Traveling Exhibitions fared well in spite of increased requirements for protecting our artwork by borrowing galleries. State Services touring program sponsors for 2008-2009 include: Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club Foundation; Bank of America; Horace C. Cabe Foundation; Stella Boyle Smith Trust; The Brown Foundation, Inc., of Houston; Willard and Pat Walker Charitable Foundation; Union Pacific Foundation; Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation; Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield; and the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas. In addition, the Rebsamen Fund offered support for Children’s Theatre on Tour. State Services programs were also funded, in part, by grants from the Arkansas Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, and the National Endowment for the Arts. State services programs remain extremely indebted to the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation and Pat Salmon & Sons for their continued support.
